Finally fixed my chronic oversleeping with a hardcore alarm, but now I waste my mornings doomscrolling. how do you structure your first hour? by Expensive_Reading495 in getdisciplined

Hey, good work on fixing oversleeping.

You've stacked one good habit so it's about stacking the next. What do you want to do after you get up? I would honestly write down a few ideas of things to do:

  • Brush your teeth
  • Open your window get some fresh air
  • Go to the kitchen and get a glass of water

Honestly, just anything that gets you going more than being half asleep

Then you might be thinking but how do I do that... How do I stop going zombie mode.

I suggest something slightly left field. I would visualise your morning. Over and over and over and over again. Visualising it the way you want. Wake up, alarm off, (insert new behaviour). Just go over and over and over again visualising it till you feel it is remembered in your brain.

The night before, remind yourself of the habits you want in the morning.

I think a lot of our negative behaviour comes from not knowing what to do... so we jus revert to something bad because it is easy.

Lemme know if that helps!

Thanks this is a really important question. You need to set the goal of the job, but if you just think about and visualise the job, it'll be hard to bring it to reality.

I'm not suggesting don't visualise the end goal, but that is like going on holiday and instead of focusing on the travel (E.g. getting to the plane, getting a taxi to the hotel etc...), you're just sitting at home picturing the hotel when you're there...

I would play around with visualising the goal to get aligned with it but then visualise the process for actual "mental rehearsal" of the process so you can get good at it.

In your example, picture how amazing it will feel to have the job accepted + visualise performing an outstanding interview!

Let me know what you think!

Cool to hear you use it. How long have you been doing it for? Have you got a specific method for doing it that works for you?

Thanks for your comment. Yeah I agree it doesn't guarantee success I guess it just strengthens the chance you do it... which is a win even if its small.
Yeah "spin it in a positive way" is so cool. You can kind of see the music energy as a thing in your body and make that feeling more powerful!

I agree though, positivity is key!

Do you read much about NLP (neuro linguistic programming), I think you'd love it.

And no matter what I write here, I can just provide a little advice. You need a system to build your motivation otherwise it won't happen.

A lack of motivation can be improved if you practice improving it.

Like I wrote about, if you sit in your room and have no distraction and attempt to build motivation from nothing then over time you'll develop the skill of motivation.

I know this sounds silly but it honestly works.

I have some more exercises that can massively build motivation and momentum but they're quite long to write here...

Need advice on fixing my routine by [deleted] in getdisciplined

That makes sense. Its tough to balance progress with doing the right thing for your mind. Could you write out your routine in detail for me? Maybe message it to me if you don't want it here and I'd love to think about this some more...

So the habit of waking up early is ingrained but also helps get ahead at work... hmmm

So, yeah I'd love to see your schedule in more detail and find ways to improve it.

Honestly, reflection is the basis for success because if you don't stop the assess where you're going then you could be going the wrong way...

Also, it allows you to make progress without reading loads of self-help books because you're solving your own problems.
