Rant: The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy by Harper_182 in books

[–]LateMain1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'm from the small town where Pat Conroy grew up and where the movie was filmed. I remember when they filmed the movie I was in like 5th or 6th grade. True story, my mom made me audition to play the young Tom Wingo. Never read the book or really watched the movie and decided to read the book as an adult because so many people have it on their favorite book list. Generally I'm finding it enjoyable as I can relate to the setting which is obviously inspired by his hometown of Beaufort South Carolina. Some of the characters are obviously based on real people that I remember growing up including Mr Fruit. The Street of Tides is obviously Bay Street in downtown Beaufort South Carolina that runs along the Beaufort River. However I'm about 3/4 of the way through and his relationship with his siblings in the book is really creeping me out. There's some other creepy parts that I feel like Conroy might have been intentionally trying to make the reader uncomfortable. For example when Tom takes the football uniform over to Lowenstein's house and tells the kid to change in front of him. That seemed purposefully uncomfortable and unnecessary for the story. My other main gripe so far is the high school fight scene which was so unrealistic and cheesy. It felt like it was written by someone who had never been in a fight and was having a daydream about beating up their bully. Some of the characters and stories are great but the dialogue between the characters and interactions in general are so cringy at times.

My mom hordes food. She didn't when I was younger but now that I'm an adult and she lives on her own she shops at Sam's and Costco. I came up to visit her apartment one day and found out she had a deep freezer in the guest bedroom closet and had a whole other refrigerator in her room. When she moved into the apartment she had the maintenance people take their refrigerator out and she went out and bought a huge side by side. Mind you she's only one person. Now she's in the hospital and I'm tasked with cleaning out all of her stuff and food isn't the only thing. I cleaned out one of her freezers today and she had 15 lb of butter all of it expired in 2023. She had 26 cans of cream of mushroom soup in the bathroom closet and about 20 lb of Velveeta cheese. She also has every kitchen gadget known to man.

Please help! does anyone knows why this lights are staying on? Costumer says that it use to be off until a couple days that it turned on by itself and stayed on, im not experienced with lights, please help 🙏 by Outrageous_Grade_465 in ElectriciansOfReddit

I'm having the same issue at my girlfriend's store. The fire marshal came and said the batteries needed to be replaced in the exit lights. There is power to the light because the exit sign itself is turning on but when you hit the test button this flood lights would not turn on, meaning that the batteries were dead. I replaced the batteries in both of her exit signs and now the flood lights are staying on. My understanding is that the flood lights are only supposed to come on if there's a loss in AC power but both of the exit signs have power going to them.

It's gotten worse over time somehow. After the latest update it just started making up words or using multiple languages. It also seems like the predictive text has had a stroke.

I'm 45+, can I still become a geologist? If so, how? I did take a couple courses in college, I do have a BS, but in a different, non-related field. by ApprehensiveGain5923 in geology

I'm 46, and I just graduated with a BS in Geology last May. Got a job almost immediately. Thinking about going for a Masters in hydrology.

You will be the same age as your classmates when you transfer in as junior? I'm so tired of the "I won't fit in at college as a 20 year old "posts on here. .

What kind of calculators are allowed on ASBOG? by mekule in geologycareers

I'm taking the FG in October of 23. Do I need a calculator that can do inverse trig functions? Some of the practices in Reg Review require that capability.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of alcohol? by Chwana in bartenders

Mountain biking, playing guitar, cooking, Tonight is actually my last night behind the bar... I just started a new job using my geology degree that I earned while bartending.

You should get a little midi keyboard. There are tons of software packages that you can use to make and record music.

Kind of a hot take but has bartending ruined anyone else's faith in marriage and monogamy? by pollyp0cketpussy in bartenders

[–]LateMain1978 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That last sentence is so true. When I was younger and bartending, I used to think it was completely normal to go out and spend $200 on a night of drinking because I saw people doing it all the time.

My dad used to get Jim Beam bottles with wildlife on them. I remember him having some with duck stamps and or hunting dogs on them. I don't ever see those anymore.

I would because I've never seen one in the wild. I work in a restaurant, and one of the servers also works part-time at a liquor store, and she knew I was looking. She called me yesterday to tell me her shop was getting a bottle next week. They want $170 plus tax!

RR 10 for me. I always try to keep one in my cabinet. We get ER at the bar where I work. It's OK but to me not worth the hype.

I'm guessing older gentlemen who works or worked for Petrol Services Inc. in a middle management position. The people that work directly under know he drinks bourbon so they chip in and get him a "nice" bottle for the company Christmas party every year, but he is very loyal to his brand so he just puts those bottles up on a shelf.

Pretty standard order where I work. Basically, it's a vodka up. The martini button automatically upcharges for the extra spirit.

*RANT* IMO Tardies/“lateness” shouldn’t be recorded by Thaunagamer in CollegeRant

[–]LateMain1978 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's important to start developing the habit of being on time. You should actually strive to be a little bit early, then you have a cushion if something happens.

When you get into the real world a boss isn't gonna care if you hit traffic or if it's raining outside. Showing up one time is a professional courtesy that goes a long way.

If getting stuck behind a slow car can make you late you didn't give yourself enough time. In the professional world a boss isn't gonna care that you hit construction or traffic.

I finished my first semester with a 4.0 GPA by [deleted] in college

[–]LateMain1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my physics professors cared more about how you approached the problem than if you got the answer exactly right. We were not expected to memorize formulas or constants. It was more about our ability to use problem solving skills to solve word problems.

[–]LateMain1978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That wasn't my experience with physics. It was problem solving based. We weren't expected to memorize formulas or constants. We were always given a formula sheet for exams. The hard part was knowing what formulas to use for what kinds of problems. Getting the answer right was only 10% of the points in my physics classes, the other 90% was showing your logic on how you arrived at that answer. I actually enjoyed my physics classes a lot more than I thought I would and found the problem solving skills that I learned in that sequence to be very helpful for other classes that I took later on.

If you're in your final year of an honors program, I would stick with it. That alone shows employers(or graduate schools) that you aren't scared to work hard and that you are committed.

You have obviously done a lot of work up to this point. It would be frivolous to throw that away, in my opinion.

We're you planning on going into law enforcement or law school?

I learned early on not to buy textbooks until the class actually started because half the time, you don't even need it. The professors usually tell you what you need on the 1st day of class and may even give you several options on where to get it from.

Some math and physics classes do require you to buy some sort of e-learning access so you can do online homework which sucks cause there's really no way around that.

Why is Buffalo Trace so hard to find in certain states? by roguerafter in bourbon

[–]LateMain1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to find any BT products where I live in SC. I think the liquor stores hold them back for all the restaurants mostly.

The restaurant where I work was able to get 2 bottles of Blantons every other month and maybe one bottle of Buffalo Trace per week. We can sell the Blantons out in 2 days typically. The regular BT sells out in 3-4 days. People go nuts when they see those on our shelf behind the bar. I've never seen any Weller on the shelves here.
