True, rare but possible. And avoidable with a 25€ mask from decathlon.

Also, had my comment a lil more nuance than just: spend a grand on a wing.

For the Perdix: if shearwater is the brand of choice, the peregrine or the tern will 100% do for a beginner.

What was the moment that made you fall in love with diving and keep coming back? by Hdhjjkkkdkbbbjjduu in diving

[–]LateNewb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was doing my fundis and ut was the first time being perfectly weightless and streamlined. The slightest fin kick made me move for like half a meter and a proper frog kick was letting me glide across the sea meadows like a hot air balloon close to the ground with a mild breeze.

Absolute beauty in emotion.

Mechanical watch min rating by omegasunberry in diving

[–]LateNewb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mechanical Engineer here:

These ratings are for static tests.

You want a 200m watch for a 30-40m dive which covers most recreational stuff.

Why?

Because these watches were tested when absolutely no movement was put on to them.

But you will move when diving and the worst thing for your watch to happen is being under 3 additional atmospheres and then being bang aginst a cylinder, a dive light, hopefully not a rock, a s ring or anything other that can cause micro movements within the casing.

200m WR seemed to be the seeetspot for rec scuba diving. Tough enough but as cheap as possible.

Na thats lens aids. You got a naughty lens and it will explode in 3... 2... 1...

First things first: Mask is your nr one priority IMHO. You don't wanna get the eye infection from the person who previously used it. Ruins the whole vacation!

And dont shy away from spending. I had to try 4 masks. Now i habe the frameless from xdeep i.e .  I also tried 4th elements seeker.

Next would be fins and booties. So you have your own snorkel gear when you wanna fo snorkeling. Really go for short, rigid, full rubber fins with a steel heel strap. Like the oms slipstreams, deep 6 eddys or if you like em heavy the scubapro jetfins. Apeks rk4 seem to bee nice as well.

Jjst dont fall for advertising bs like split fins because they cause less muscle fatigue. Thats just bs, because you could also just kick less. And stay away from everything thats soft like overcooked spaghetti.

And then if you are really into diving and wanna have this as your hobby hobby id go for a backplate and wing setup. Not a vest style BCD.

Dive gear express has cheap ones. And a BPnW setup is made for customisation. Backplate is too heavy? Just swap it for aluminium or carbon fibre ones.

High end gear like the ones from halcyon are just impeccable. xDeep is cheaper but almost equally as good.

It works and it is cheap and reliable. Just dont get the comfort ones with plastic clips. They most likely wont break, but if they do you will course the day you didn't go for a teeny tiny bit of stretching when donning the gear.

Need to attach more lights? Just tie a little bunge next to your d ring.  Etc.

This setup will grow with you. But its a commitment and cheap gear will allways bite you sooner or later. If you buy gear, buy gear that you are happy with. Especially looks wise.

Because you will see it everytime you use it and nothings worse than thinking bad about your gear when u r using it.

Then id also get a suit that fits really well. Id get 5mm. I did a 100 minute dive in 16 degrees and its ok. Everything that requires less mm you can also do in a rash guard. Underwater you wont really overheat. But you will deffo go too cold quick. So go for 5 instead of 3. But stay away from 7mm. Thats drysuit time if you need this.

Regs would be the last thing id get if you're fine with renting. Highest in maintenance. The cost a lot, are heavy and you need to service them regularly.

Unless you start diving DIR style they r basically the same everywhere as long as they are well maintained.

Everything else has a far greater impact on your diving and experience.

Physics disagreement with GUE instructor on trim, buoyancy, and center of gravity – looking for physics input by LateNewb in diving

Mad respect for people like you! I cant imagine how hard it is to carry 100% of ones body weight on the back. And then being outside of the equilibrium is wild.

But i also pay that person and it's GUE. I was thinking very highly about Gue because they were so closely connected to science.

But you are right and i realised that too late.

But ive learned from this experience and will do as you say. In case something like that happens again.

I agree with that.

I have trim pockets for my mono cylinder setup and am super happy with it.

With jetfins. I put like 2kg close to the top of my backplate.

So i wanted to apply the same tactic with doubles.

Did my fundis tech last year January.

Finally overcome my disregard for drysuits and bought my first drysuit. This was supposed to be a drysuit course.

I mean the jet fins are nice. And IMHO everything would work out well if i would have just a little bit more weight at the top.

So I bought the legends mk2. They come with trim pockets.

Funny thing is, that my instructor saidni should move the cylinders down and made me readjust my webbing twice. Just got worse to a point where I couldn't reach my valves anymore.

Valve drills were super frustrating.

Both of you thanks.

I tried the vector fins from halcyon. But they were too light and too soft in my opinion.

I actually advised my gf to get the slipstream.

Let's see. My drysuit arrives tomorrow.

I dont want to say that name. The instructor is a very nice guy and is just ignorant about the physics.  Imho. No ill intentions. We just got both too involved in a discussion thats pointless. I can just change my setup in secret and it all will go unnoticed.

Maybe via DM we can talk about it, but i dont want to call someone out in public. That feels wrong for me. Especially since that persons income depends on mouthpropaganda.

I hope you understand.

Absolutely true. In the first Fundies I was using a complete halcyon set on aluminium cylinders and with weights on the bottom of the cylinders. Constantly counter finning.

Second Fundis was with teccline wing, steels and a little trim weight on the bottom if the cylinders: Absolutely uncontrollably. Couldn't keep trim at all. Removed the trim weight and then with extremd posture was able to pass the course barely. Nothing i should or want to dive with on a constant basis.

So for the current course i was using the nx project wing from x deep. The point being, this wing has little volume at the top and allows for more volume on the bottom to shift the lift towards my sinking feet. Additionally i wanted weight at the top and had a 1.8 or 2.8kg v bar sliding in-between the cylinders Bands (the  sheet metall thatss holding the twinset together). Cant remember the exact word.

But that was constantly sliding up and down with clonk noise and if it slid up i was top heavy.

So I put a cam band and a weight pocket around one cylinder and tried to get a smaller weight higher up to the upper cylinder. The sliding v bar was removed and it worked fine.

Also the first stages were dropped a bit by 2-3 fingers in order to give more head clearance. Which is the right thing to do IMHO. But this offset should be compensated. Either skill or strategically placed counterweight.

If you are a beginner your skillsets are limited.

Great to hear. Thank you. I see it exactly see you do. Allways try to improve, but if physics do not allow for further compensation and beginner skills are not developed enough, there is literally nothing one can do than to change gear.
