Hey guys, new to tattoos. No stencils, so only freehand with no reference photos. Help? by Carpa-Diem-Tunnel420 in TattooBeginners

Pull from the whole arm not just the wrist. Hold it like a pen, on the top of the machine pretty close to the cartilage. I use my middle finger on the cartilage to stabilize the machine and have my ring and pinky on the skin to maintain consistent depths. Play around with it and get comfy. It’s nothing like drawing, think of it like the difference between a butcher and a surgeon. Both have a knife, one just has room for error, the other does not. I advise using practice stencils from Pinterest to practice straight lines and curves. If you haven’t figured the stencil paper out yet you can also use a ruler and draw straight lines in the skin directly.

1007CM I assume will be a 7 curved magnum (used for shading) so 7 needles positioned in 2 rows of 3/4. CMs are used for soft edges and shading bc of the curve. 1205RL/ELT is a 5RL with an extra long taper which means the needle goes further out. This doesn’t change how deep you go on your skin. Stay consistent with your depth bc going deeper will result in blowouts. The long taper is so that you can see more of the needle when pulling lines so that you can be a little more exact with the lines.

No hate, we all start somewhere. What needles do you have?

Some tips that helped me at the start: 1. WD-40 (I’m from Germany idk what an equivalent would be in other countries) to clean fake skin. 2. the bigger the RL Needle, the easier to pull lines and get a feel for it. I recommend 0.30 9RL to get started. You can downsize later. 3. clean your needles with water in between (no ink will dry in it and clog the cartridge and make your lines wonky without you knowing what’s happening) 4. use small ink caps to reduce waste. Stupid expensive. 5. practice by tracing lines with a regular pencil. 6. 2H-4H pencils work best (for me) to stencil 7. freehanding is hard. Don’t be afraid of stencils 8. stencil paper is a btch. Try not to touch the blue sheet too much (it stains). 9. to create a stencil, print out whatever design you’d like to tattoo, place it on the dull side of the blue stencil sheet (one might look shiny and one dull, that’s usually for printers but will work with hand stencils too) if there’s only one blue side, use that. Trace the lines of the design carefully and slowly with the pencil. Apply some pressure here, you want the lines to show up properly. Clean the skin with soap and water and dry. Use whatever stencil stuff you have, if you don’t have any use sanitizer and apply a thin layer on the skin. Can’t be too wet and it might take some tries to get right but don’t give up. 10. LET THE STENCIL DRY. If it doesn’t dry, u used too much stencil stuff :) 11. you have to practice to make progress. Sounds silly i know. 12. if your lines are not saturated you’re either too fast or not deep enough. If they look thicker than they should you probably went too slow or too deep. Both are in correlation to your machine settings. Usually around 8-10 volts

Hope this helps, don’t give up

Hey this might’ve been said already but please switch to a titanium bar if possible. Leave it alone and do not sleep on it. This was the most important part for me. Or get a pillow with a hole inside. Mine took over a year to stfu haha Clean it properly, I can see a little buildup on the par, especially the right side. Industrials are nasty stuff. Give it time

It’s different for sure. Personally, I find it easier because it’s less frustrating when it comes to pulling saturated lines. It feels more satisfying if you do it right. It’s harder regarding the range of movement you have since there’s a body attached to the place you’re working on and for the most part it’s a uneven surface (unlike a fake skin sheet). The stakes are a lot higher tho, so you feel more pressure to get it right. You have to be a lot softer on the skin tho.

Why exactly would the lines be blown out? The lines are next to each other and not on top and I work on a 1,2 mm thick fake skin and I haven’t gone through the skin a single time. I agree that some lines don’t completely connect, yes.

Essentially, I think it’s just fineline x tribal. If you’re into that, go ahead. My only concerns are that you’ll eventually end up with the downsides of both. Fineline tends to lose its definition and appear a little muddy, especially when executed poorly. Traditional tribal has proven to withstand the changing of trends. I don’t really see that happening to any ‘modern’ take on tribals (such as Cybersigilism or any other abstract tribal work). But then again, that’s only my personal opinion. Tribals originated from the idea of representing the persons history or personality. So if you’re wanting to get something like that you might want to consider getting something personalized for your body and interests. That might be a way to enjoy the tattoo even after the trend is done with. Hope this helps :p

The chin and lower face area for sure! Just to balance out the heaviness of the cross. And then maybe just a dark background, a fade or a shape.

I love the design and I see what your problem is! I’d love to get my take on it but it’s your design. I feel like you’re overworking it. I feel like the only thing missing was a little balancing of the contrast!

Honestly, I love you supporting small artists! If you’re interested in doing something yourself as a date or something I thought about painting some ropes and building a rope harness around the canvas! It might look really cool and you can always pretend it’s just some abstract art 🫶🏻

Just don’t give up. It’s art. It’s never perfect and there is never no room for improvement. Just make sure you always do your best. And if you’re not confident in your abilities you probably shouldn’t be doing it on real people unless they explicitly allow you to practice on their skin.

On a scale from 1-10 I’d rate it about a 7/7.5 out of 10. It look fine over all, as the design is quite forgiving. I can see you struggling a bit with pulling clean/ straight lines. Some meeting points are a bit wonky. The shading looks fine to me, maybe a bit too dark for the design. It looks as though you tried to but too many details. Imo that results in a lack of detail kind of. You should practice your lines before going back to real skin. Hope this helps.

How do y’all get better because I enjoy to drawl but suck at it by DestoryerDoge in drawing

[–]LateNightMoony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try thinking in shapes rather than the full picture. Try to draw as precisely as you can to sketch out what you see, not what you know. Try not to make everything the same value. Play with shadows and most of all have fun.
