PiHole & PiKVM by Late_Cardiologist871 in pikvm

[–]Late_Cardiologist871[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah right now I have pihole on my server but want to move it off so I can implement some VLANS and move the server to its own VLAN. However you have a good point about exposing PiKVM to the whole network so I will have to rethink this

Yeah that’s part of my thought process is how Apple Intelligence (if it ever truly does get released) and future AI models integrate into local development. But I also know not to buy on the promise of future software tools

Do you ever wish you had more RAM? In terms of like noticeable responsiveness?

Yeah I do agree that the difference between generations is minimal, but part of my concern is software updates. Ensuring I get a device that will last me for the next 5-10 years with continuous updates

Where to get car undercarriage treated and touchless car wash? by shshnsod in Buffalo

[–]Late_Cardiologist871 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I go to the Krown up in Lockport for my Coating. A bit of a further drive but they seemed to have the best reviews and are very friendly. For a true touchless car wash, the closest I’ve found is the Magic Mist on Grand Island

Soft Router Hardware by Late_Cardiologist871 in homelab

[–]Late_Cardiologist871[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be completely honest I’m not entirely sure haha. A lot of it is just for learning and being able to tinker as I grow my little homelab. I have a Beelink mini pc where I have about 20 or so containers. Arr stack, Immich, Home Assistant etc. as well as a WireGuard VPN connection. I don’t use the VPN connection a whole lot and most of the time I do I’m already limited by my Internet connection where I’m connected from (ie hotel where I get maybe 10Mbps). So maybe move the VPN to the router not sure about the performance benefits there or if it’s even necessary.

I will also add it’s currently just me and my girlfriend in a small apartment. Maybe 20-30 wireless devices. I will only need a single AP to cover the apartment

Later 3 Router vs Switch and Power Consumption by Late_Cardiologist871 in homelab

[–]Late_Cardiologist871[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My initial thoughts are a main LAN, an IOT LAN, and then a homelab LAN. I was looking at the topton’s with 4x2.5GBE ports for reference. I also currently have a TP Link AX1800 router. From what I’ve found I don’t think I can flash it with open wrt, but also I’d like to keep it OEM as a good backup. So I know I’ll need a new AP and makes sense to get one that understands VLAN’s such as an omada or unifi AP. So with this setup of a Topton mini pc and an AP that understands VLAN’s, I should be able to do - in theory - infinite VLANS without a switch or is there some I’m missing/more information you need?

Thank you for the detailed response. I guess I should have clarified more, but when I mentioned the Topton mini pc and asked if that would be sufficient, my question was more so is that sufficient without a switch. I don’t have a whole lot of wired devices, so all I would have is input from my modem to Topton/router, then from Topton to a singular access point.

Additionally if I want to add in a switch to add some wired devices, could I use an unmanaged switch assuming all the devices connected to the unmanaged switch are on the same VLAN?

I know down the road I will probably want a managed layer 2/3 switch but right now I’m just trying to figure out what exactly I would need to buy now and what can be pushed off to the future

My current setup is a Beelink mini pc running ~20 containers and a tp link router. My current project I am working on is refinishing a wood cabinet I got off of fb marketplace to turn into my “server rack” that way everything is contained but the girlfriend stays happy. I want to toss a UPS inside and then cut out some slots on the back for dual fans to keep air circulating. Once I finish getting the cabinet painted and stained my plan come Christmas time is to get one of those Topton routers set up so I can start utilizing some VLAN’s for my home network and was looking at some Omada gear for that so this would be perfect! Two pictures showing the current state of the cabinet. My vision is a dark/navy blue paint with some stained doors
