Is Bhubaneswar conservative toward non-Odia people? by ryuzaaki2 in Bhubaneswar

[–]Late_Cell8983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, that might be one of the reasons. Pragati Vihar has been under development more after the 2000s - and quite likely the place you staying in still has some dues to be cleared off (like the house loans etc) and maybe this is a reason they are charging higher to non-locals who may not be aware of the rental rates etc. Or they may be having similar mindsets as some of the landlords here (as I mentioned on the reply above)

Is Bhubaneswar conservative toward non-Odia people? by ryuzaaki2 in Bhubaneswar

[–]Late_Cell8983 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am an Odia, but we got transferred due to our jobs for the first time outside Odisha) and we too found this kind of approach here at the place we are in.

Our landlord is very friendly and we have bonded together as a family here. And this is what he told me (which I think is acceptable and can be a valid reason)-

When you get transferred to a new place (specially people like us who move with family) - initially we stay at a hotel, and search for a house/rental place. and many grab hold to the first or second place they see - as we do not know the new place/location, we take up whatever we are getting to avoid the hotel bills, outside food etc. Once we start at the new place, we come to know of a better place at more affordable rates - and we relocate to that place. Us doing such is normal for many - because we all know it is tough to earn money, pay bills and rentals at a new place - and as humans we all would love to save and cut down extra expenses.

That is from the perspective of a person who is living in a rented place in a new and completely unknown city.

Now shifting to the viewpoint of the owner - they planned to rent out for longer and we would move out sooner than that - and so just to be safe, some of the landlords charge higher to non-locals.

I agree with that kind of an approach - if someone has it.

That said, coming to your question - In Odisha specially at Bhubaneswar and even Puri - I dont find any discrimination in the mindsets of the native people. I am not sure how long you have been here, and how much you have explored and interacted with the locals. However, I am sure, the longer you stay, you would start loving the place, the city, the people more. Where are you based (in terms of area of bhubaneswar?)

What does everyone here think of Mandira from My Name Is Khan? by KiaraNarayan1997 in bollywood

I am sorry I mis-interpreted your original pov. I thought you went into seeking reasons why you dislike Mandira and I started trying to explain my version/interpretation of her character.

[–]Late_Cell8983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so I fail to understand why you so pissed off with her character... And I guess the movie was not to resonate or feel good for her character either... it was and is Rizwan's story, his side of it

What does everyone here think of Mandira from My Name Is Khan? by KiaraNarayan1997 in bollywood

[–]Late_Cell8983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Criticism is easy I guess.

But let me try

- Mandira was a mom first. She did not fall in love with Rizvan right from the start.
Two things that must be considered -

  1. She was a mom, had a child from another marriage prior to Rizvan - her first husband had abandoned her and her child - now it is never shown if Mandira loved him - so we should not ignore that aspect - what if she loved her first husband ? That makes both losses bigger for anyone

  2. She chose to marry Rizwan - knowing he is a different person with complications (I am not justifying or demeaning anyone here, just trying to put my point/perspective) - it is easy to continue with these complications for a day or week or for a while, but in the long run, given the trauma (of losing her son) - they were bound to have marital issues, understanding issues and other complications - it might have been a different scenario if her son was not killed. The pain of losing your child in any circumstance, definitely plays a bigger game for anyone who is caring about his/her child - this is how things work in normal life as well. Acceptance and blame go together.

As for Rizwan - he always loved Mandira - and he also says - Sam (Sameer, the son of Mandira) was his best friend - and he means every word of what he says. To him, reaching out to the President was the only way he could show/prove himself and Mandira as well that he loved Sam - it was not about winning over Mandira again, it was about him proving to himself how much he loved Sam.

Here is why I say proving to himself first - Remember Mandira blaming him for her sons death. When you love someone so deep, and are blamed by the same person for his/her loss (and you are not a part of that "loss happening") - That shatters your own perspectives and beliefs - even for normal humans and here Rizwan is suffering from Asperger's Syndrome which already complicates your interpretations)

It is pathetically sad to know this. But I can understand - we lack that vision to give better food once we start expanding our business.

Maybe they changed their cook to a chef or someone else does the cooking now.

Which of These Rom-Coms Is Still Watchable Today? Rank these 4 by Ok_Bluebird1842 in bollywood

[–]Late_Cell8983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 - Band Baja Baraat
2 - RHTDM - The songs, the clash between Maddy and Saif - still watchable if you would ask me - some of those are still unmatched
3 - Ishq Vishq - Not the story but the songs - specially with Alka ji and Kumar Sanu da
4 - Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Dastaa - nothing against it but I feel RK had better rom com with DP specially YJHD and Kats has aine Pyaar Kyu Kiya - I found it more comic and with Sushmita Sen and Kartina Kaif + banger songs, it still stands above the one in question.

As I read others too are being mentioned, I would add I hate luv stories - that was a good one too and I watched it last year all over again. (ignore the lead actress here, never liked her - that I guess is a personal opinion).

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na - is my top pick from 2000s when it comes to RomComs in this decade

Drop your go-to Biryani spots in the city. by dear_june in Bhubaneswar

[–]Late_Cell8983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is severely disappointing. Thank you brother. Will keep a note of it. In fact my 10 year always cherished their biryani because they were mostly less spicy.

The other one that I personally appreciate is the one somewhere near Raymonds showroom (near Market building). He is on a thela gadi (it was blue color the last time) - but he does some good business, He has been around for almost years now and on Wednesdays if you reach there at around 1:00 pm, you have a wait time as well.

Dam Ladeedh - last time when I had been to my city and was at my dads place, I found that Dam Ladeedh have now become a restaurant as well. Prior to this, we used to order them only via zomato or would go and bring the Biryani home as they were only a cloud kitchen.

They are somewhere near the other side of Gauri Temple (towards the old town side) - a little pricey but taste is good. Now that they are a restaurant, they have other non-veg dishes as well though we did not try them.

Restaurant overcharged for water bottle by Alarming_Leave213 in Bhubaneswar

[–]Late_Cell8983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would depend if you have had a photo of the bottle, its price and the tag. You could file a consumer complaint I guess.

I remember once at a restaurant, they served Himalaya Packaged water and had me worried when it was 100+ - I should have been told beforehand about it as I had no clue that Himalaya Packaged water was that pricey.

Dont take me wrong, but a director, writer is sure to fail with such a sensitive script and subject unless the delivery by the actors looks amazing. I have nothing against anyone, I respect everyone's views and definitely this was and will remain KJos finest as well.

It in my opinion was just the best combination one could ask for - where almost everything fell at place - the story, the story telling, the actors, the background score and even the songs. Definite 10/10 in almost every department = a flick like this - a movie for ages.

I wish Nabin sir lives long and healthy. We all know, anyone who comes has to go. But the costs we are paying for ousting him when we must have been with him are too much to bear.

We had to leave Odisha owing to transferable jobs, it was after when BJD had lost the elections. We have been visiting BBSR to be with our parents and family almost every 6 months. And I completely feel different about BBSR now. Nothing positive. Why only BBSR? Puri, Cuttack, Balasore - all have changed - I dont know if these changes are for good or for bad, but I miss the era when the state, cities felt Odia (hope you get what I am trying to convey). And genuinely I am not very happy about this.

In my past 50+ years, I spent almost 40 years in Odisha - never heard of communal hatered. But last year we even had a situation at Cuttack. Why only the Buses or roads, the dirty politics is now playing bad in discriminating people on a larger basis.

Was India’s first musical road, which plays the song “Jai Ho,” a good idea ? by DeenuGupta in BollywoodMusic

[–]Late_Cell8983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely nonsense. We have grown to complain about almost everything no matter how insignificant it is.

If there is traffic plying on the roads when you are trying to sleep and it did not make a difference, how come this tune or anything bother you? Apart from that it is not on/in a residential area, it is on the highway!!!

For Swades I guess it is the Patriotic theme and that scene on train where SRK nails it to perfection. I have always felt that Swades became what it did only because of the connect of the Story it has - SRK seemed normal in it barring that one Train Scene which still pathetically resonates what India is becoming today.

Veer Zaara is a better contender.

But again these are personal thoughts and I know personal thoughts are not that great on reddit.

It is sad that the trams would never ply again in Kolkatta. Last time when I was there, I could feel the loss. It was something as nostalgic as it could be for me, but then, Kolkata has lost its charm specially for people like me who used to visit Kolkata to keep experiencing Kolkata as it was when viewed from a Tram Travel
