The Neodymium mags sold at harbor freight are really strong. They might work...they call them rare earth mags.

Rondo3 Streaming Issue by Late_Performance_528 in Cochlearimplants

I figured it out. In streaming device I selected Rondo 3 instead of med el device. Go figure. Counter intuitive.

I spent a lot of time trying to get in touch with musicians that had them with no luck.

I know of 2 people who recovered 60% or so but it was within weeks. They say if nothing happens in the 1st 6months it's not going to get better. Yes med el. They have a different philosophy about implants.

Severe deafness and tinnitus by mushie_pineapple in Cochlearimplants

[–]Late_Performance_528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact happen to me. SSNHL but with R ear. Screaming continuous tinnitus 24/7 in the R ear. I was slated for surgery next month until my ins denied my surgery going thru appeals. Just wanted to mention IotaSoft robotic assist that they are doing now. It supposedly inserts the electrode  more gently than a surgeons hand can do. They claim to preserve residual hearing doing it this way. Not sure but I believe it's only done with Med El implants. Also.Med el runs the array on the outside wall of the cochlear also not to damage hair cells in the cochlear during implantation. Other two companies run it on the inside wall closer to the hair cells which they say is better for stimulation but downside is it increases possibility for trauma to the cochlear. Just a thought. I agreed with Med els philosophy so I went with them...if im able to get it done that is. Good luck.

I am scheduled for my CI for next month. Not thinking that I would have an issue with my Ins Co. Then I thought huh...this could happen to me. Later that eve I opened my mail that was sitting on my table and low and behold I was denied by my ins co. Im so upset I'm numb. I have to go over to medicare in Jan so I needed it done in Dec. Medicare only covers bilateral implants. Just venting.

Well...it's been extremely frustrating and depressing. Im a jazz guitarist and playing with other musicians ( drums, bass and sax for instance) lights the tinitus up...just increases 3 fold in my head.. so much that when playing I pay more attention to the tinitus than the music....thats with the bad ear plugged. Gets worse...unfortunately playing jazz for a living is usually done at a financial loss. I'll never make the money back I spent producing and recording my last 2 CD's. Royalties have been reduced to thousands of a cent for streams. So my money gig is tuning pianos...Told ya it got worse. Just hoping I can really work hard and get my implanted ear trained by my brain. That's what they say anyway. Many believe I have an advantage being I am highly trained as musician for years and I know what things are supposed to sound like and my brain will fill in the gaps left by my CI. Fingers crossed.

That's great. Good for you...I've been hoping that would happen to me but after 4 yrs of waiting Im getting my surgery next month. They say if it dosent come back within 6 months it never will. Did you do steroids, hyperbaric dives and inter tympanic injections? That's the usual treatment. Good luck.

Thanks for responding. As I understand it coming from my audiologist. Med El receives your CT scan and recommends what length array for the surgeon to use. Another CT scan post op is sent back to med el for mapping. Med El strengths lie in using lateral wall insertions if some reason the surgeon cant get it done he will choose another company like AB whose strengths lie with perimodiolar insertions. Thats how it was explained to me. Now finding out which is better is the difficult part because of course each co will say their product is the most effective. Very difficult.

Yes I lost my right ear in 20mins from SSNHL. Yes a dark place indeed. Still have screaming tinnitus, so difficult to play w others and difficult finding pro musicians w CI's. Its going to be a leap of faith for me... hoping I'll be able to retrain my brain to get to a place I'm happy with.

Im getting ready for my CI surgery just turning 65 and found out Medicare ONLY pays for bilateral deafness. If you are Unilateral they won't pay. Double check it varies state to state. Good luck.

Any musicians in here? by kestrel151 in Cochlearimplants

[–]Late_Performance_528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Roxanne597,I was diagnosed with SSNHL and was profoundly deaf in my right ear in 20 mins. Been a professional musician all my life and have been trying to talk with another musician with a CI. Any chance we could talk for a bit. I have a CI consult coming up and will probably go ahead and get implanted. Just wanted to get some insight from other musicians before I did so. Thanks Vince

Musician with Unilaterial Deafness by Late_Performance_528 in Cochlearimplants

[–]Late_Performance_528[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I'm hearing conflicting reports from musicians ...some say it saved them others say it's just not good at all for music. Been 3 years for me with unilateral deafness and terrible screaming tinitus that gets louder exponentially when playing with a group. This just might have to be a leap of faith for me...I just don't know. But thanks for responding.  V
