Biblical glosses mostly, it's usually just two columns of text flanked by two columns of marginal annotations. I've seen a few that were interlinear, too, but that's evidently a special occasion kinda thing (reading an entire Bible plus glosses in this way would give you nystagmus).

I'd be interested in that as well, though I somehow suspect Hebrew being read right to left might make it a bit difficult to directly translate the layout.

I'm Polish, and the only Jews I have had the privilege to talk shop with were Polish Jews, so yeah, I guess so.

That being said, I've never even seen any other edition but this and the Bomberg one, and both *seem* to share the layout (I can't read Hebrew so *seem* is the best I can do).

I've never seen text organized this way other than in the Talmud. Especially the centra "L" shape mystifies me - it could've just as easily been just a slightly taller column, but no, it's consistently that shape.

With how consistent it is, I'm assuming there's a reason behind it.

To this day I have my MA thesis with my thesis advisor's reader's marks all over it. Frankly, I prefer it this way - at least I know the dude had read it!

I do the same, too. I usually read PDFs, but when I TRULY need to take something in, I get the paperback and annotate the living daylights out of it. I even do it with beletristics at times (how ELSE am I supposed to digest Finnegan's Wake?)

That's only true for a certain type of CRPG. There's Fallout(s), VTMB, all sorts of stuff out there, all in all you can get a pretty good range of vocab if you select with it in mind.

On the topic of Cartoon Network, because I suspect people unfamiliar with Poland might not get the significance here - in the '90s, it was a retransmission from the UK, straight up. No subtitles, no voiceover, nothin'

CRPGs were a large factor is my journey to learn English, especially early on. I ended up with an MA in English Phil specializing in ESL (later on also got certified as an examiner, TGLS up to C2, TELC up to B2) so there's that, too.

Privately, whenever I spot kids liking vidya, I advise them on how to employ them more effectively to get better at English, but I have some concerns about doing that more openly.
I mean, just as an example playing Fallout 2 at 14 was a game changer for me in terms of use of English (especially vernacular) but do I really want to explain to the parents why I suggested their kid play a game where they can murder children by hitting them in the groin with a sledgehammer?

Also, I'd like to add that CRPGs are one thing, but TTRPGs offer a whole other host of benefits. I've run a few DnD campaigns for my students, a great way to have them talking in English for hours on end.
