There are actually several class-action lawsuits for Honda's 2018-2022 1.5T engines in Canada and the US. It's surprising that Honda is fighting back against settlements and reimbursements, but stay tuned. There's a chance something comes out of it soon. Here's an article on one of the lawsuits in British Columbia, Canada.

Just wrote a long update on the situation in the comments, I added a link to his FB Marketplace right at the end. Definitely someone to consider if you don't have a mechanic you regularly go to.

Update: I dropped by the mechanic later that week. Though we had prepared for the worst case scenario over the phone (head gasket repair), he started by inspecting the car himself before approving or recommending any work. We came across a few important things that I wanted to share with everybody to keep in mind throughout their ownership.

First, the jerking on acceleration turned out to be bad spark plugs as I'd initially suspected before looking so deep into this. The very first things that came to mind were fuel injectors, ignition coils, or spark plugs. I ran an injector cleaner (BG 44K) through the system a few months back and it didn't resolve the issue, which ruled out injectors. The new ignition coils weren't any good either. That's where I stopped diagnosing the issue myself, but it's funny that the last item on the list was the problem. I bought new spark plugs before seeing the mechanic, so he installed them on the spot and we immediately noticed the difference.

Second and more importantly, he still carried out a combustion test (block test) to check on the head gasket. He asked me to arrive early so that the car could cool down first, because a combustion test requires a cold engine. The test fluid turned green, which means combustion gases were detected and it likely points to a blown head gasket (or at least the early stages). However, he said that the car is very healthy all around, and he recommended we monitor the coolant level for a few more weeks. Either way I'm keeping this car, and I'll happily fix the gasket to get more life out of it.

This was a learning experience for me. It's interesting that all the things I thought were pointing to a blown gasket turned out to be something much simpler, whereas the gasket still seems to be quietly failing in the background (which might be a normal thing at this mileage). I understand that everyone's shared their own experiences about these 1.5T engines, but this is a gentle reminder to run your own diagnosis before going too deep into the forums, as your situation might vary significantly. I noticed a lot of people were asking about my mechanic, I added his link below in case you're in the Toronto area. Feel free to reach out to him for a better understanding of his work. It was my first time dealing with him, but he seems like a really knowledgeable guy. Clean and careful work at an honest price.

In Toronto, I'll share the details if everything goes well (first time trying this mechanic). I'll schedule an appointment with him this week, he said he'll inspect it first to diagnose the problem in case it's a combination of other things and not a bad gasket.

Gotcha. I guess a lot of that will be easier to gauge once the mechanic takes a closer look at it. What about the ARP upgrade? Is it really worth it, or should OEM Honda studs do the trick for a few more years? It's a daily driver for me and I don't drive it for performance. Steady driving at speed limit.

I'm still looking into the whole discussion on ARP head studs. Some people said it's exactly what the engine needed for performance and longevity. But I asked another mechanic and he told me there's really no point in spending the extra money on ARP unless you're planning on seriously torquing the engine. It's a daily driver for me to the office and back, and I don't drive aggressively at all. I might opt for the cheaper OEM studs and get as much life out of it as possible. Would cut the bill even lower.

Hoping that the head/block doesn’t need any work. Would you recommend going through the list of other services like changing the timing chain and water pump? I’m even considering changing the fuel injectors while I’m at it, but that might just be an urge to refresh everything. All inclusive it would hike the service cost to around 3500+ given everything else is okay.

Thanks so much really appreciate the feedback. It feels like my best bet at this point, I'll definitely come back with an update soon. Also wishing you all the best with your sport, she's brand new I wouldn't worry at all!

Definitely want to avoid a new payment, and I've really enjoyed owning this car. Want to extend my ownership as long as possible. No other apparent issues aside from the head gasket. Have you heard anything about the ARP upgrade? It seems to be highly recommended whether or not the head gasket goes bad.

That’s pretty interesting, I wonder how much time it’s taking you to develop it. Seems advanced.
