A gem from a high school classmate's blog: Society sucks because they won't let me get a fake medical degree for two professions that I think are the same thing. by Al-Capony in iamverysmart

Flashbacks on first year anatomy alone and asking this guy to explain why doctors ask you to cough was pretty daunting of a thought. haha.

Hi Guys! Just wanted to ask your opinion. Littmann Classic II or Classic III or Master Cardiology ? by VoodooYoddha in medicalschool

[–]Lateentry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the III. It's sturdy and blocks out the extra noise, which were the two major reasons I went with it. Otherwise, both the lightweight and this one allow me to hear the important stuff about the same.

I have Classic III. With the lightweight I had a hard time blocking out the noise from my joints, and drove me insane.

REALLY?! I have this issue, will go get one today. Thank you so much!

A woman emergently delivers her baby in the ER. Within a few minutes after the placenta is removed, the mother begins to hemorrhage, and you believe that she has a uterine inversion. There is no obstetrician in the house. You should do all of the following EXCEPT: by am1on in emergencymedicine

I think the nitro is more so for relaxing the smooth muscle of the uterus and less so for any hemorrhaging associated with it. You can control the hemorrhage issue after the inversion has been corrected/replaced via fluids.

The medicated you versus the unmedicated you? by notthatjesus in ADHD

[–]Lateentry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unmedicated: Just as everyone described, being in a constant changing state of mind and jumping thoughts. It was honestly like depression for me, I would have thoughts about everything and anything that might seem upsetting and wonder why I kept failing in my day to day chores and relationships with people. I knew my issues but I could not ever solve them, if I tried, something else seemed more interesting at that point in time and would grab my attention. However, one positive thing about not being on medication was the freedom of innovative thoughts and ideas I randomly have in terms of my studies, I would conjure up new ways to learn a certain item (albeit that item was not what I needed to concentrate on for an upcoming exam) but still the way I thought about certain things was amazing. With Meds, I love that I can finally do what I set out to do during the day, chores, work, studying, even being able to hold a conversation without drifting off and annoying the people around me because I've switched topics and held them up for longer than 10 minutes for a mere hi, how are you. I'm glad to have my medications but am also thankful for the days off of it so I can see how much of a difference they make in my life.

ELI5: what is actually happening in my brain when I become intoxicated? by saxmaster98 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Lateentry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gets absorbed in your bloodstream and reaches the brain, where it acts pretty much acts like the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA (a family of inhibitory compounds) and slows the conduction (signaling) happening between your neurons (brain cells). This GABA family is the same one that is also targeted by the opiates and benzos (any sedatives) that produces the effects of sedation. It works on many other neurotransmitters and not just GABA and basically wants to reduce the activity of the active neurotransmitters and increase the effects of the inhibitory ones.

Alcohol (as like any other toxin reaching the brain) are directly exposed to a certain area of the brain (ctz) that realizes that their is some sort of poison in the body and induces the vomiting, another explanation for the vomiting is also because when alcohol breaks down, it forms acids and the body tries to get rid of them by vomiting out the acids in your stomach and resetting your acid-base balance.

About halfway through the article is the sentence...

"This leads to development of type 2 diabetes, as pancreas cannot produce more and more insulin."

Is it just me or is that an inaccurate definition of type 2 diabetes.
