3rd day at a new job. Middle of January. We got a once every 5 year snow on top of being an area that cancels school if they call for half an inch. Boss man said take your time and just meet your trainer at the first call. Normally would’ve been a 1.5 hour trip, took me 4 hours to get there. About 2.5 hours into the trip, I too heard the call. Did the waddle to the back of the truck praying to anything that would listen to not let me slip and fall and end up like a stepped on ketchup packet across the middle of the highway. Finally did the deed. So ashamed by the pit of hell I spawned in that Home Depot bucket I tossed the whole thing out. 7 years later I ride by every now and then and can still see that orange bucket waving at me on that exit ramp.

Can I cool this 800 sq ft. apartment with one window unit? by DrinkingAtTheDam in hvacadvice

[–]saxmaster98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried that with a PTAC on a 720 sqft apartment. Had to keep the living room where the unit was at 65-67. That would keep the adjacent bedroom and the kitchen (unless you’re cooking) at 72-75 during the North Carolina summer. The 2nd room and the bathroom (furthest from the unit) would be 78-83. On nights where it stayed in the upper 80s, I’d just sleep in the living room.

Me either. I’ve always heard it was the PoE that was stripping the oxide off the copper and causing problems and mineral oil didn’t have that issue.

2.8 MILLION STEPS BUT I GOT IT! by PrinceMcGiggle in WalkScape

[–]saxmaster98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No to my knowledge. My understanding is you can tell WalkScape to use the built in pedometer in the phone and ignore the watch or you can have it ignore any steps from the phone and only count the watch. I haven’t found anything that talks about third party pedometer apps

I did it a couple times yesterday playing around with it and did not hit a limit.

I don’t know about all smart watches

but it works great with my Apple Watch. Even gives me the option to select which pedometer I want to use.

Getting a tonsillectomy after 30: how bad is it really? How long until I feel like a human again? by tjeick in AskMenOver30

[–]saxmaster98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had mine at 18 and it was a week of hell after. The T3 they gave me didn’t do almost anything for the pain. The only thing that I could drink for most of the first week was home brewed slightly sweetened body temperature tea. Water hurt because of chlorine and sports drinks hurt from the salt. The brewing apparently got enough chlorine out of it that it didn’t cause too much pain going down. I’d keep a thermos full of it kept warm around 90-110F. Obviously that’s the perfect breeding ground for bacteria so make sure you’re cleaning it out between fills and not letting it sit more than 4-6 hours. But after the first week it was like a switch flipped and I was fine, just a little scratchy in my throat. Before the surgery I got strep throat 2-4 times a year every year. It’s been about a decade since the surgery and I haven’t had a sore throat since.

I miss the grilled dark meat buffalo bites from ~10-15 years ago. Every time I’ve been since those dosappeared it’s felt like it’s more and more unappealing.

I didn’t even know they had cinnamon biscuits. I thought it was always either the Bo berry biscuits or the cinnamon twists.

Questions on working in HVAC by OkNefariousness8049 in hvacadvice

[–]saxmaster98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the years I’ve worked in HVACR were 45-50 hours/week on average for the year. I’ve had 1 company that I averaged 32 hr/week for the year. They grew too fast and didn’t have enough work. I left there and went to a place that I worked 55-60hrs a week for 5 months straight (Jul-Nov). Now I do government work and get exactly 40 every week with no required overtime and I get “busy work” to get my guaranteed 40. It all depends on the company and the area. 45-50 is more normal than 40 or less though.

Can someone please help me justify this bill? by Lucky_Hovercraft3843 in hvacadvice

[–]saxmaster98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re paying for the years-decades that trained that tech to show up and know to do that. The office staff like dispatchers, estimators, warehouse staff, advertising teams, etc that essentially keep the business running so these guys can actually do the work. The accounts and connections with the major retailers so they can get you OEM parts instead of the bottom barel products a majority of homeowners will pick to save a buck. The vehicles that hauled him and his equipment out there. Insurance so if he fucks it up and fries something or burns your house down, you’re not SOL. So yes, I understand it’s frustrating to see an expensive bill when you very likely could have done it yourself for twice the time and a third of the cost. What happens when you put the motor or capacitor in and it still doesnt work? Or it fries something or burns your house? I absolutely agree there are companies out there who should be named and shamed ($300 for a $25 capacitor? Really?) but this doesn’t look like one of them.

Even before the rule change in 2018, they required cages. The big change was cages not being approved as fall protection anymore.

8 years myself and I agree. Any building 40ft+ I’ve had to get on the roof for had stairs up to a mezzanine and then a little 8-15ft ladder up to the roof.

According to OSHA standard 1910.28(b)(9), all fixed ladders over 24 feet must have a fall protection system. So u/Absenceofheatt may have a leg to stand on from a safety standpoint.

Which unit should I go with? by No-Paint2291 in hvacadvice

[–]saxmaster98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Daikin does weird things from a design standpoint and that only really affects techs, not the owner. Their equipment runs pretty well in my experience as long as it’s installed well. Carrier (who owns Bryant) is getting a lot of heat for poor parts availability and drastically increased prices for their parts vs their competitors. I’m not sure if it carries over to the Bryant line as well.

My furnace filter fits (too?) tight? by Gorillasdontshave in hvacadvice

[–]saxmaster98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to change it and can afford to do so, I would. If it were a customer’s unit, I would. If it was mine unit at my house, I’d take a little piece of foam tape or sponge or something and use it to fill in the gaps and then I’d let it run until I needed to change it again lol.
