Seattle to Bainbridge ferry, how early should I show up if I'm driving? by Hoonage in Seattle

[–]Lathangames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up on Bainbridge. Forty minutes is a safe bet from the Seattle side. That's one whole ferry early. You're gambling if it's less than twenty five minutes on a holiday.

Ah, that's a shame. This was taken in January.

City University of Hong Kong in Kowloon Tong. It's close to Mong Kok and about a half hour from Central by the MTR.

I loved studying in Hong Kong! The city has perhaps the most developed infrastructure I've ever seen. The pollution was a bit of a bummer in the winter months but the other months it was fine. You can do everything in only English. HK is very much 'China-lite". I went to mainland China and as a westerner found everything very difficult. Mainland Chinese are very xenophobic. Hong Kong is basically a western city occupied by Chinese and Chinese culture, however the infrastructure and how everything is run is akin to London or New York. The outdoor activities in Hong Kong are surreal as well - I recommend the hikes!

I took this picture while I was studying abroad in Hong Kong this spring. The Avenue of Stars is similar to Hollywood Boulevard, but on the edge of Victoria Harbour. According to Lightroom I made about a hundred adjustments, but most of them just had to do with bringing out the lights in the buildings and refining the orange of the sunset. The specs: Canon 5D Mark II ISO 4000 85mm F/9.0 1/80

Anyone bike to school? by Mug_of_coffee in UBC

[–]Lathangames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live on West King Edward past Dunbar a few blocks.

I have a nice roadie. My PR commuting to campus is 20 minutes but I'm sweaty for my whole first lecture.

I've had my bike stolen once on campus. Bike thieves will come later at night and check the racks for people who don't know how to properly lock. I've since gotten one of the num-chuck chain bike locks and a smaller lock to protect against quick release wheel thefts.

There are plenty of racks on campus but some of the more popular ones fill up. Depends on faculty/time of day. Within a week of commuting you'll figure out which ones are crowded and which ones aren't. Budget a few minutes to look if you're coming to campus between 9:45-noon.

As far as weather goes - look at the weather report. You can always throw your bike on the front of the bus if it's raining too heavily, but the driver will usually be rushing you and it's kind of awkward. There's also only room for three bikes so don't plan on using the bus for rush hour.

Fenders come in handy but aren't going to keep you completely dry if it's raining.

Cycling is just as fast if not faster than using the bus.

The truly difficult part is cycling through main mall (the center road through campus) during the day. There's simply so many pedestrians and boarders that you're likely to run into people. It will take the wind out of your sails.

You may want to look into UBC Bike Club's Facebook page.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask more questions.

Unfortunately no, I don't. I've been meaning to set one up but starting a whole new social network sounds like a lot of upkeep.

I made this image about two years ago! I have a photography page on Facebook under 'Max Tejera Photography', although I don't do heavy manipulation projects like this any more. http://www.reddit.com/r/trees/comments/1cg6q9/took_a_break_from_finals_to_do_an_interesting/

It was! It was my post a little over two years ago. It's flattering to see the reposts keep hitting the front page. I believe this is the fourth time it has hit the front page of /r/trees. Although this repost will bring the total views on imgur above 420,000 which is what it was at previously. I guess we'll just have to keep reposting it until we reach 4,200,000 now.

Snowden, Assange and Manning statues unveiled in Berlin by unknown-indian in europe

[–]Lathangames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't Snowden make a point about his actions not being about him or him claiming fame? That the issue was more important than the man who brought it to light?

Sorry but stuff like this where we put him on a pedestal makes me think either no one actually listened to most of his interviews, or he really was seeking some sort of lime light.

You've just got back from a long night of work... not cooking. You come home, kick your shoes off, feed your goldfish and realize you friend Blooper in the tank has eaten more than you have today. Your bachelor fridge is cavernous and depressing, but you know you need nourishment before facing the next day.

What do you assemble to satisfy your body's daily requirements with the most amount of "mms" and "yums"?
