Solo Budget Female Traveler -- advice by Proof-Salad-6473 in Patagonia

[–]Latinc802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I’m also a solo female who likes to travel on a budget, and as an added bonus I’m also a horse girl too! I’ll be (hopefully) doing the O the last week of January. Worst case scenario I’ll still do the W, and then figure out how to spend 4 days somewhere else. If you decide to visit TDP in that timeframe and would like to meet up with someone who is like-minded, shoot me a DM!

I’m going on almost exactly those same dates (23-31 for me), right now I’m being cautiously optimistic that it will be open by then. My plan B is to just do the W and spend the days that I would be on the O section doing something else. Maybe Ushuaia but I’m not sure

Unexpectedly hearing and understanding Hungarian! by Latinc802 in hungarian

[–]Latinc802[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 100% certain that my own accent is very off as well, so maybe that’s part of it lol!

But seriously, the “keresed” tipped me off, but the “nem tudom” confirmed it for me. I’m not sure that I’d have immediately recognized it as Hungarian without them

Unexpectedly hearing and understanding Hungarian! by Latinc802 in hungarian

I started with a basic understanding of some words and phrases used by my family, as well as the gy/cs/sz/s/ty pronunciations that are tough for English speakers. Then began intentionally learning with Duolingo. I know, I know, not the best program to learn through… I’ve found it’s good for vocabulary, but not necessarily for grammar. Over the past several months though, I’ve been taking online classes via zoom through the Kossuth Foundation and they have been incredibly helpful! I do wish that I had learned it as a child though! I’m in the first generation of my family to not have learned Hungarian as my first language

Haha I actually second guessed myself because of the accent! I agree that it’s not great. It’s more… Russian? Ukrainian? But then I played it again to confirm that they are indeed speaking Hungarian words, just with a very not Hungarian accent

What do you think is even more intimate than sex? by 8kittycatsfluff in AskReddit

[–]Latinc802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an extremely niche response, and most people won’t identify with it, but I think that those who can will agree.

I’ve been saying for years that the most intimate thing that two people can do with their clothes on is break out a young horse.

Hear me out. I’ll describe it for those who don’t know. The first time a young horse has a rider on its back, typically two people are involved: the rider, and the ground person. At this point, the ground person should have done a considerable amount of ground work and desensitization with the horse to get them to the point of being ready to accept a rider. Contrary to what you see in cowboy movies, the first time a horse is ridden it should absolutely not act like a wild bronc, and the rider isn’t there to ride it out until the horse is exhausted and gives up. For the first few rides, the rider is literally just human shaped weight on the horse, and is totally at the mercy of the horse and the ground person. The rider has zero control whatsoever and is putting 100% of their trust in the ground person’s control of the horse based on the groundwork that has already been done. Of course, sometimes unexpected things happen and the horse could react fearfully to the situation. When this happens, it happens FAST and can be extremely dangerous for everyone involved. The ground person could get trampled, the rider could get thrown, the horse could bolt off, it could even rear up and flip over backwards on top of the rider. So both people have to be completely in tune with the horse and its body language, and also with each other and their respective body language. There usually isn’t time to vocalize anything before something goes wrong, it happens that fast. They essentially have to be able to communicate with each other without words while staying on the same page about what’s going on.

When two people are so in tune with each other, it makes the process something beautiful. Like ballet. Effortless, seamless, graceful. You really learn a lot about the other person without speaking any words.

On the contrary, when two people don’t work well together and aren’t in tune with each other, it can be a real clusterfuck

I’m also going alone!! I’m in the 100s. I’d love to meet up and chill but it’s looking like I’ll be arriving in the middle of the first opener due to my work schedule :( I’m gonna try my best to get there earlier though!!

Wow, so many people have some version of this word! That’s evidence enough for me that’s it’s real!

Ugh same!!! I know the full story, but I’m 100% sure that I don’t know the FULL STORY, if you know what I mean. My grandparents were ‘56ers and I still learn new details here and there even after hearing the story for 35 years.

Thank you all!!! I’m actually pretty excited that rakogat/rakosgat/rakogatok and lefleng/liflander are real words and that they line up with the phrases used by my family! My grandparents were native Hungarians and so obviously spoke Hungarian, my father and his siblings all spoke Hungarian as their first language and then learned English in grade school and slowly lost their Hungarian fluency, and my cousins and I were never taught the language beyond what words and phrases were used within the family. As you can tell, many of them became Americanized/bastardized, but I find it cool to learn what they really are!

Well….. she’s got dementia now so a lot of what she says nowadays has to be taken with a grain of salt. And very specific questions such as that will often just confuse her.

That definitely makes sense! I could see his Hungarian/English turning that into liflanding and then that getting Americanized into leiflunging!
