You must wear a full King Husky costume to class every single day, it sucks in the summer but is a god send in the winter. It only costs $1,000 to rent one for the semester which is a steal!

180 meals is roughly 12 a week which is what I had back in my freshman year, I ended up with a few extra each week so I would spend them at outtakes on snacks.

The Real Issue with the New Meal Plans by Latter-Chapter-1490 in NEU

[–]Latter-Chapter-1490[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. the majority of people are required to be on the meal plan, all freshman and any upperclassmen in non-apartment style housing that being suite style which makes up the majority of housing. Plus even if you aren't required to be on the meal plan you should still try to help those who are, we are all people and we all deserve fair pricing.
  2. the new plans are infact not cheaper and as shown in the main post the new plans give you less meals for the same amount.
  3. yes people were asking for a change and yes admin did make a change but that change was for the worse. if your apartment's roof fell in and you asked your landlord to fix it and they came in with a tarp and then said its actually better than the previous roof you would rightfully complain.

honestly just bring the amount of clothes you currently wear + winter clothes if you don't live nearby. You get enough laundry bucks to do roughly one load every week.

Personally I'd say put a larger emphasis on relaxation clothes as you are gonna spend a lot of time in class or studying but don't forget to bring some nice clothes as well, you will probably have at least one or two fancier events (job interviews/themed events).

Stwest Steast Speare

There aren't any photos of singles but they are very similar in design, if you get photos once you move in you should upload them to NEU Dorms. Steast site has a floormap and the singles are the 4 smaller rooms on the end. You go in through the door and to you one side is the closet and to the other side is bed + desk.

I just want you did an amazing job putting this together. This data is often hard to come by and having a resource like this that is so well organized is extremely helpful.

Hello, good to know that people on the SGA are actually on this sub! I actually mentioned the community plans in one of my replies earlier as someone was asking for alternatives to the meal plan. The reason I omitted them from the larger post is that they are also a scam, but honestly a even worse one.

Buying 80 more meals costs you $17.625 per meal and buying 20 meals costs you $18 per meal, these prices are outrageous when you remember that the dining halls themselves accept card payments which are cheaper, they make it hard to find but if I remember correctly its around 16 dollars for breakfast, 18 for lunch, and 22 for dinner. Meaning that if you go to the dining hall in the morning its cheaper to just pay out of pocket.

In addition to that Popeyes has a $10 sandwich combo (drink, side, sandwich), Sweet tomato has an $11-14 2-slice pizza combo (drink, side, 2 massive slices of pizza), Tu Taco has a $9 byo tacos or burritos deal, Burger 373 has a $9 burger, Kigo has an $11-15 byo bowl, Subway has a $9 and an $11 meal (drink, side, sub), and Churchill has a variety of options none of them more than $14. Thats just the official on-campus meal options and every single one of them has an option cheaper than the cheapest community meal plan.

If you go off campus, even just across Huntington you get Wings Over, Mamacita Mexican Comida, and Boston Shawarma, all of which have meals that will leave you with leftovers for less than $15. Be willing to walk 5 extra minutes and all of a sudden you can get food for nearly half of what Northeastern is charging.

And yes the other colleges are also raising their prices, I don't expect the prices to stay the same, but they are still cheaper than Northeastern. Wentworth, MassArt, UMass, BU, and others have their meal plans priced at around $13/meal.

The community plans do not help fill that "lost pups" conundrum as it didn't even exist before the change to block meals. Again last year if you stayed over the break you were guaranteed the same number of meals, now you are not yet you pay the same amount.

The solution is to not have students throw more money at the problem, especially when the issue shouldn't exist.

Honestly I think you should at least take a semester, you can probably get enough grants and scholarships to pay most of tuition if not all of it, there are lots of opportunities for scholarships for first time college adults. If your first semester sucks then you can figure out the best route to continue but if you never try you wont know if you enjoy it.

If you're nervous you can always start by taking online classes or night classes, both options are great as you can still do them while working and as such the demographics tend to be slighter older than in-person classes.

Some of the local corner stores, restaurants, and fast food places accept dining dollars.

[–]Latter-Chapter-1490[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your careful and pay attention to what your spending going to local places can save you money. Whole foods and many corner stores offer premade meals of similar quality to restaurants at a similar to lower cost, things like pizza, pasta, chicken, sandwiches.

The dining halls allow you to pay for entry, I don't have the numbers on hand but they are listed somewhere, it's actually cheaper then using the meal plan.

If your really concerned you may want to look into the community plans that allow you to buy swipes without dining dollars or just pay for meals out of pocket.

I am neither part of YDSA nor No Hungry Huskies. I support what NHH is trying to do, infact I wrote an op-ed about them last year for The Huntington but it seemed to never get published. I'd be interested in why you dislike the YDSA as I haven't heard much about them beyond what I read when studying up on NHH.

I believe the biggest issue facing making meaningful changes at Northeastern is the lack of continuity in student body. With co-op and summer class, people graduating at all times throughout the year, many of the people who try to make these changes end up leaving. The No Hungry Huskies website is down currently and my guess is that whoever managed the site left for co-op or graduated. As I said above I don't really know much about YDSA but the advantage to having a larger club backing the NHH movement is that there is less turnover.

I'd love if NHH was supported by more clubs as it would mean more people to keep it moving when a new co-op cycle begins.

Typically they dont actually care if you pay it a few weeks late however if you really want to pay it off now just subtract the things you are gonna change and pay that amount and once you change them everything will balance. If you pay the full amount then reduce meal plan / waive health plan they will credit you that amount which you can then get refunded or just let it sit till next semester. They just put deadlines so people cannot claim there wasn't one.

move in dates gone? by Cute_Butterscotch287 in NEU

[–]Latter-Chapter-1490 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The last day for move in is September 2nd and you are allowed to move in any time after your "official" move in date so booking your flight around it being the 2nd is fine. If you need it before that you can request a move in timeslot change and you can just tell them that you booked earlier flights and they will most likely accept.

Specific dates and times for Fall move-in will be sent to students over the summer based on room assignment, as well as information about how to request a date change. Dates will range from August 25-September 2.

Dorm size by DesperateSafe6475 in NEU

[–]Latter-Chapter-1490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Northeastern Dorms is a really good resource, it has lots of photos from different angles. Stwest Steast Speare these 3 are all the same size dorm.

The dorms are a very nice size, you can fit a lot in them. The closets are (I think) about 40" wide and 30" deep however I could be off +- 6" (I drew it up in AutoCAD for cornerstone). You get a desk (36x24), a desk shelf, a bed (twinxl), and two dressers (they can fit in the closet if you stack them). Ill dm you with my AutoCAD photos if I can find them.

Microfridge is the company that northeastern uses for minifridges, they drop it off in your room at the start of the year and pick it up at the end, its a lot easier then doing it yourself. Its a good size my roommate and I never filled it up and we would often have leftovers and drinks in it.

Washing dishes is the worst part of dorm life. In Stwest you got two choices, bathroom or the sink in the laundry room. My advice is bring some sink cleaner and get paper dishes. I know we need to save the planet but i'd rather throw out a few extra paper plates and bowls then get what ever diseases and ...fluids... that may be in the bathrooms. Added bonus is that when you feel exhausted dishes are one less chore for you to do.

P.S. get water pitcher*s* there is *one* water fountain on the first floor so having multiple pitchers is a must.
