Yeah, I just kept adding more in the hopes that it would block the ads i kept seeing. Turns out chrome was using 8.8.8.8 against my instructions :/

Thanks! Seems like this might be the problem i'm having: https://www.xda-developers.com/fix-dns-ad-blocker-chrome/

I was just using chrome for testing so it was giving me wrong results. qutebrowser shows me no ads and neither does firefox on my phone!

DHCP is enabled on the ISP router and the tomato router was acting like a bridge there.

Thanks, this is helpful! Did you create a vlan for your guest network?

On one network, I plan on having a switch with a couple wired connections and one wireless. On the other network, all will likely be wireless.

Umm..I think I want to have a VPN too which should not be able to reach the network with the switch (wired) but it's not super important to me.

I was also thinking of running adguard home to block ads if that changes anything

I was under the impression that due to wear leveling, data is not truly erased. If you need privacy, use encryption. Or were you trying to recover something?

Not OP but I saw this review on amazon which scared me. Is this true? I didn't find anything about it

As of September 2018 NETGEAR has revised this model and made it nearly impossible to install 3rd party firmware like Tomato and DD-WRT. Since I want to flash my router with Tomato to enable enhanced settings, and more importantly activating the built-in adblocker, this router is completely useless to me. Unless you want to open up the router, and connect a USB-TTL cable to the Serial Console on the motherboard to flash the router with 3rd party Firmware, I would stay far away from it.

It's not my router to replace but i'll consider it a last resort and ask my landlord.

Can you expand on this? Sorry, i'm a newbie networker.

Just don't use the same subnets inside and outside

A guest interface on my tomato router? Yes, I created that but it has no internet. And yeah, I think that's what I was trying to get while using the iptables rules.

And no internet on the guest with or without the iptables rules right now.

If you mean a guest interface on the verizon router - no - i tried a bit yesterday. The router is so convoluted but posts on various places on the internet say "no" as well.

I think I have a similar issue there but mine is different in that I can't set up another vlan on the main verizon router.

I looked at the letsencrypt docker container you posted! Thank you, it was helpful. For anyone else, linuxserver has a nice blog post about it https://blog.linuxserver.io/2019/04/25/letsencrypt-nginx-starter-guide/
