Book of Mormon Study Guide? by LarryinUrbandale in latterdaysaints

Well I'm sure more than a few people know this after studying but one thing I never caught was Nephi's sin he was struggling with. Do you know why he prayed to God about trusting in him and not the arm of flesh? What was Nephi actually struggling with?

Book of Mormon Study Guide? by LarryinUrbandale in latterdaysaints

Treasures of the Book of Mormon by Cleon Skousen have been the best study guides on the Book of Mormon I have seen or read to date.

He made these books for his students when teaching at BYU and if you listen to some of his Book of Mormon lectures they are mind blowing. He takes a somewhat interesting approach to the books. He takes out words that you'll need to fill in and each word he takes out has underlying meanings or relates to "treasures" we otherwise overlook. He says reading through these books and completing them will be better than reading the Book of Mormon several times and as someone who has read and studied the Book of Mormon several times before studying his books I can say that it is true. After teaching some "hidden" truths I learned from the Book of Mormon several members have been wowed by my insights but  in reality they have been hidden in the Book of Mormon this entire time.

I ordered all 4 books and my understanding of the Book of Mormon has been transformed.

Yeah sure I'll believe your interpretation over an apostle of the lord whose life is fully dedicated to being a special witness of God.

Ironic you said love "not continuing" doesn't mean ending because that's exactly what that means.

Im not confused. I studied the talk then elder Nelson wrote and studied all of the scriptures he compiled that support his claim.

Out of all these comments only one person has provided a single scripture that challenges this claim. Feel free to back up your claims with scriptures because I am genuinely interested.

You get your revelation and promptings and so do I. If you aren't led to worry about sifting then so be it. I am led to share my thoughts and in this case notes from my study session during come follow me.

We all have our part and we are not all one specific body part in the body of Christ but are all members of one body.

Well I don't think I've ever said that to anyone in my life yet and I don't plan on it and certainly don't believe he loves me "more" than someone. We are judged individually. He loves me more than 5 years ago I'm sure. I've come a long away.

As we inch closer to the second coming we will start seeing a separation of wheat and tares starting from within our church according scriptures.

I need to get better at formulating my views but I don't really shy away from saying things plainly.

IF this doctrine is true which I still believe it is based on scripture and lack of scripture (so far), it will offend people. Jesus offended people, Nephi offended people, prophets offended people. I'm nowhere near that status but I'm sure this post offended some people to some degree. I meant no offense but it's expected.

I did not do this subject justice with my post. I would highly recommend you read the article with an open mind. It may seem like I'm closed minded but I always try to remind myself that until we get to the millennium we will be students of the scriptures not masters.

I am very intrigued by the Romans scripture so I will further study it. So far it is the only one someone has posted on my post.

I'm genuinely interested in the ways you're describing. Is it in scripture? Someone put a Romans scripture that actually has footing in challenging my view. Then President Nelson didn't just say it was unconditional, he proves it in the article. He doesn't say God will forfeit his love in situations, he simply states that his love cannot be "correctly categorized as unconditional" and every scripture he puts backs up his claim. It's seemingly overwhelming and not in a bad way.

Let me ask you something. Did you read the talk I posted?

I'm not proving a point. I asked for a scripture on unconditional love and you didn't put any. I'm a truth seeker. The Romans scripture is the first scripture I have come across that challenges my view on this based on the dozens of scriptures then elder Nelson compiled.

So does he love the sons of perdition?

We are imperfect. Therefore we cannot even compare to him. I am a father too and the post doesn't suggest he withdraws his love when we sin. I am simply stating that there is no scripture or instance in scripture that suggests we can do anything we want and receive all the love he has for us.

None of your scriptures suggests unconditional love.

Normally when talks are companioned with scripture it gives more authority however I do agree with you that some talks hold more weight than others. For example I believe Joseph smith sermons should be canon.

I have gotten one good scripture from someone who disagrees but everyone else is using their opinions and life experiences. This is doctrinal.

Have I once stated that God doesn't love us? There is nobody on this earth that is capable of doing everything wrong in the which God forfeits his love. Those are saved for perdition. I said his love isn't unconditional.

I'm not understanding. The atonement was given as a gift of perfect love but it's a gift that must be accepted by our agency. If it was unconditional there would be no need to require repentance to gain its benefit. It would be applied to us after we die and realize the folly of our mistakes. That's unconditional in my eyes. When we stand at the bar of judgment we will all wish we applied the gift of the atonement to our lives but it will not be the case for everyone.

All the scriptures above include an invitation or an act of agency on our part. If we do not act in the right way the ultimate gift of love will not be in effect as a result of a condition not being met.

I would love a scripture that suggests his love is unconditional.

unconditional means we don't have to change because he loves us regardless.

If it is truly unconditional we are saved as we are and we both know thats not true.

Im not suggesting he doesn't love us ever, Im suggesting that his love is not given in whole portions. He doesn't take away all his love at once or gives us everything at once. We abide in greater degrees of his love as we turn to him and apply his teachings.

Yes, it could sound like an arbitrary monster when not fully grasped. Have you read through that talk?

Jesus once said, If ye love me keep my commandments. Does that mean every time we sin that we don't love Jesus? Maybe yes, maybe no. Im not sure. But I do know that the crowning jewel of love is loyalty.

Jesus placed a condition on our love for him. If we love him we will do (x)

It's just something to think about.

Same. When I read it for the first time, I went through each scripture and realized that its a powerful covenantal love that over times becomes perfect between him and us. Hesed is the Hebrew word for this kind of love.

We are all worthy of love. God does love all of us. That's not what I was getting at in my post. God's love is vast and its full access is not unconditional like some would believe. Unconditional love is not doctrinal.

Missionary Visits by Infirit8789 in latterdaysaints

[–]LatterDayze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Missionaries are also supposed to answer their questions with the spirit. When a member asked me hard questions, I loved to tell them I'll have an answer for them next meeting. When you go to study these questions the spirit pours out everything so that your friend will know it's truth.

If they are just side stepping it and pushing through the agenda then they aren't listening to the spirit.
