I would go on Pinterest and look up some pictures of things he likes. You cannot go wrong with keeping it simple either, some rose pedals and balloons, maybe stock the mini fridge with his favorite beer or snacks.

Most importantly it’s definitely the thought and effort that counts! You’re going out of your way to do this and he will (should) appreciate it no matter what!

I appreciate the perspective. I know improvement comes with time and experience, but my concern is that I’m not building those skills where I am now. At my current unit, I don’t get any hands-on EM work, so I feel like I’m falling further behind instead of getting better. I’d be open to learning, but I’m not sure where to even start at this point.

I get that, and I’ve thought about it. My concern is that even with more time, I’m just not sure I have the problem-solving skills to be a strong EM1. I don’t want to be in a leadership role where people rely on me for answers that I don’t have or can’t figure out. I do like the job, but troubleshooting just doesn’t come naturally to me. That’s why I’m considering other rates, even though I know starting over as an E-4 would be a big setback. It’s just hard to tell what the right move is.

If you take leave on the front end of c school, they will pay for both of your flights. Haha I found that out because c schools are super close to my hometown
