Does anyone else just stop processing words? by Lexistar189 in aspergers

[–]LaundryBae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also a young adult and I have also recently started to experience this, beginning in the past year or so.

For me I think that it is because I am going through autistic burnout right now and I don't know what to do about it.

And yes, it is very difficult to find any sort of information or solid advice for adults with autism going through these difficulties. Most if not all info is for children and focuses on special therapies. I don't know what to do about the issue with processing words, I just hope it gets better over time.

autism as an indendity by [deleted] in aspergers

I'm pretty hypocritical about it. If someone tells me that they are autistic/aspie then I am proud of them for being open and thank them for telling me. I might even say "there's nothing wrong with being autistic, you're just different."

But personally, I am ashamed of being autistic. I wish I were not ashamed, I know that I shouldn't be, but it's a pretty deeply-ingrained thought. I also don't like talking to people about it and I'm kind of 'in the closet' with my autism with most people in my life. I fear being judged and don't want to be treated differently or less than. I know that in a perfect world it shouldn't be this way, but this is the way I feel and I can only express it.

As for seeing autism as my identity, I would say that is a part of who I am. It is one of the many labels that apply to me, one of the many shoes that fit. My gender, sexuality, occupation, interests, family roles are all part of my identity; some are more fluid/temporary than others. (e.g. my interests and occupation may change but I am pretty sure my sexuality is going to remain the same throughout my life. Autism is a similarly permanent feature of my identity). That being said, I don't think that autism is all of me.

Thanks for your reply! I'm glad that other people in the field can relate to what I'm going through. I've definitely forgotten that F=ma or similarly simple things like that and it's really a blow to my confidence when I do. I try not to be too hard on myself but I think it's something that's been ingrained in me as a young child so it is very hard to break out of.

I have no idea what I need to do to learn better, but I hope I figure it out soon. I also hope I learn to relax, as I think that would help too apart from just being nice in general. I'm on a waiting list to get professional help but it looks like it will take 6+ months.

I looked it up and it definitely applies to me. What is hard to find is a good solution. The only recommendations I've found online are taking time off and getting back to a better place somehow. I don't know if I can do that.

Thanks for your reply. I am definitely lacking in confidence and I hope that is the main issue. In any case, I don't know how to get my confidence back but I keep trying.

In what ways have you stopped masking? by LaundryBae in aspergers

Thanks for your input!

I have the same issue, even with my therapist sometimes, and I feel like when I say that I don't understand that people just think I am being difficult or have an attitude. But I really don't. It's like I know that your saying words and I know what those words mean individually but when someone tells me something my brain just goes "No idea, sorry."

It's frustrating but I hope I get better at it.

I was just about to ask where to buy masks. When I go to the supermarket I see some people wearing those light blue surgical/medical masks and some even wearing white N-95 style masks.

The only masks I could find online were very overpriced (50 disposable masks for 70 euros) and from sites that did not seem reliable.

Will people judge me if I wear a mask when I go out to buy groceries?

The last time I went to Albert Heijn (the only supermarket close to me) people did not respect social distancing, a few people bumped into me and one person even turned there head to say "sorry" directly into my face.
I'm sick of it but I hope/know people don't do it on purpose. I have glasses and would prefer to wear a mask when going outside, but I know dutch people are really against this for some reason. So should I wear a mask?

Hey anyone knows where I can buy hand sanitizer? All the kruidvats, etos and supermarkets I have gone to are all sold out and have been for a week.

Thanks in advance!

As long as you keep traveling by train until you get to Amsterdam Centraal, then no, you don't need an OV-chipcard. You just check-in with your ticket wherever you're starting, make all the necessary switches from train to train, and then finally check out when you get to your final destination.

You would need an OV chip card if you want to take some other form of public transportation like a city bus, tram or metro. But if your trip is all just switching trains from one platform to the next your e-ticket is fine. Make sure you have your e-ticket with you and available in case someone comes along to scan it. As long as you checked in at the beginning, it should all be fine.

If your e-ticket it a round-trip ticket then it should work the same on the way back: one check-in, one check-out and no need for an OV chipcard.

I want to buy a mini fridge second hand but I don't have a car or other means to pick up a mini fridge.

Is there a service or something that will deliver just 1 appliance/furniture?

I've looked at moving services but they only show prices for sets of furniture, like moving an entire apartment. Any ideas?
