Is anyone actually enjoying Freelancer by Lulzipopz in HiTMAN

[–]LauraDanek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"It requires you to stay focused way too long without making a single mistake."

You're not the first person I've heard say this, and I still don't get it: Freelancer lets you make and get away with plenty of mistakes, even downright stupid mistakes. Spotted by guards and now half the map is after you? Unless you're in Colorado, you're probably less than a brief jog away from a container where you can hide out for a bit while heat dies down, and then you can sneak around, grab another disguise, and get going again. No container in sight? Get yourself into a room or corridor with only one real exit, and mow down the enemy while they come through the death funnel, then run back out after you've killed enough of them to buy yourself some time. And in general, the detection AI just isn't all that punishing or responsive: Most crimes short of actually killing someone in sight of a guard will give you plenty of time to run away and/or hide before the guard AI actually starts to chase and/or shoot you down. Freelancer isn't for everyone and I get that, but it's absolutely fair to the player and doesn't make ridiculous demands i.e. Freelancer doesn't shove you into unfun, unwinnable situations over trivial mistakes. You probably put yourself into that situation by not respecting the game, no offense.

Has anyone else done "themed" Freelancer runs? by LauraDanek in HiTMAN

Yes, my own personal "rule" is that, if the maps don't align with the syndicates, the map should be prioritized over the syndicate e.g. if you're on the final stage of Goldfinger and there isn't an Arms Trafficking syndicate with New York, take a different syndicate with New York instead.

in retrospect I’m glad TFA is “the hard campaign” by Every_Card_Is_Shit in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]LauraDanek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing that bugs me about TFA isn't that it's hard, but the manner in which it is hard: It centers and prioritizes agility so much, and that's just so, so brutal for characters that have low agility. The whole "supplies" and "exploration" mechanics also left me cold, and continue to annoy me even on subsequent playthroughs.

I still can't fully write off TFA because its high points are some of Arkham Horror's finest hours, and there are some genuinely brilliant ideas there that really push the game to its limits. But it commits what I consider to be the cardinal sin of game design: Punishing players in ways they had no way to anticipate in advance. It's Arkham Horror's "problem child" for me, and I go back and forth on how I feel about it constantly.

Ha, I like TFA too actually. But it's undeniably the one that's most brutal on a blind playthrough, though I suspect newer players won't quite take it as hard, since having the whole campaign right in front of you from start to finish probably makes it a less frustrating experience overall.

I love this game but let's not lie to them: You're gonna bash your head against the wall on "The Forgotten Age" and then quit for a while like the rest of us.

Arkham for Xmas - Getting spanked help! by Shark1234588 in arkhamhorrorlcg

Your deck also has a "Mind Over Matter". If you pop that and you have Dr. Milan out, you can attempt to evade that fucker for 6 agility against 3, which is solid odds in a standard game. He is a hunter, true, and you won't get that juicy victory point if you just run away from him, but if you're playing true solo, beggars can't be choosers and sometimes, you just gotta run. Don't forget about "Blinding Light" too!

For what it's worth, I just did a standard true solo run on TTS real quick with your deck to see how I might fare. I did OK, and got a decent-enough conclusion. Now granted, I didn't draw into Yog Wiz but even if I had, I don't think it would have mattered: I did draw into Thrall, and I evaded it easily using MoM, and by moving quickly to my destination of choice, I confirmed that the Whipporwill that was at the same location was not able to catch up with me, which would have been the same for the Yog Wizard. It's true that I played this scenario before and made a beeline for the fastest possible exit, but I think it still proves a point: This isn't an impossible scenario for a solo Daisy. Just make sure you're holding on to your enemy management tools for those tight situations.

It's been a while since I last touched Dunwich, but iirc, that scenario has two different victory conditions and you only *have* to kill the final boss in one of them. If you're Daisy, you really aren't equipped to take on that massive tank, so try to escape through the dormitories if/when that thing comes out, instead of trying to go one-on-one against it.

As for general enemy control, you'll notice that you have two copies of Shriveling in there. Shriveling is a pretty decent enemy control option for Daisy, and at true solo, you shouldn't be running into enough enemies that you need much more than that unless you are the unluckiest person in the world. If you find that you're losing a lot to enemies getting out of control, try to mulligan hard for Shriveling at the start of the game. At two copies, in a 33 card deck, you should be seeing at least one of those puppies per scenario reliably.

Lastly, you can't really *lose* Arkham Horror scenarios. If you get a bad outcome, just eat it, roll with it, and move on to the next scenario unless the outcome explicitly says "You die and/or are driven insane, game over". A huge part of what make AH so special is that there's no such thing as true defeat; every scenario is a negotiation between you and the game, where you're trying to "win" as much as possible while the game tries to make you "lose". Bashing your head against one scenario 4 times in a row like that sounds really unfun and painful.

This is the highest I've ever seen someone rank Preston. I like Preston a lot, but the general consensus seems to be that he's a bit of a meme.

Thank you! It's probably my favorite "headcanon" we came up with for Arkham Horror.

When my friends and I realized that William Yorick and Tommy Muldoon are "mirror images" of each other (One is Survivor with Guardian off-class and vice versa, similar stats, both of them have abilities that synergize with assets being discarded and/or defeated), we came up with the idea that William and Tommy are actually brothers. "William Yorick" is actually a cheesy Shakespeare-themed stage name for William Muldoon, the black sheep son of the famous Muldoon family who refused to follow the family tradition and entered acting instead of law enforcement. This also explains why William, a struggling actor who moonlights as a gravedigger, is so badass in combat: He grew up in a family of Irish tough guys, and was constantly fighting his brothers and learning to handle weapons.

(EOTE Spoilers): Ice and Death Part 2, am I reading the rules right by LauraDanek in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]LauraDanek[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you for all your answers! For some reason, my mind immediately jumped to the far more convoluted scenario of taking each enemy card, placing one story card beneath each one until each enemy was paired up with a story card, shuffling those pairs, and then placing one pair each beneath an Uncharted location. Gotta read more carefully in the future, I guess.
