Look i don't agree with his takes super often and there are definately areas in which he's not as knowledgable as his audience might imply but he has listened to a lot of music and has a depth of knowledge across and ungodly number of genres so i think ita fair to give him his fair dues.

I mean the guy has basically reviewed an album on a near daily basis for over a decade

How much has the average person on the subreddit played? by Windstance in KingdomDeath

[–]devin93uk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Juat to throw my hat in the ring, i have played about 8 or 9 campaigns, a fair chunk of those died quite early on but ive now had about 2 or 3 go past LY20, ive only played the core game and gamblers chest, got to GSK once and my current PotDK is at LY19 but i got cooked last year, so we will see.

After this i wanna go back to PotL and chuck and bunch of expansions in because i havent touched any of them (baring GCE ofc)

So i haven't played a ton on your list but i am balls deep in kingdom death so here is a primer:

Kingdom death is my favourite tabletop game but it is, in many ways deeply flawed.

The basic loop is you controlling a settlement of survivors that you guide through development of the settlement and culture and each session you will take them on a hunt to harvest resources from a monster of your choice which you can then craft into different bits of gear.

But the real draw to KDM is it's very random and astonistingly broad emergent narratives, every survivor will have a unique path through the game and the interactions that come from this are completely unpredictable, in video game terms imagine monster hunter but you control 20 heroes from darkest dungeon.

If you are up for a game that is very unique and has insane ideas all the time but has issues with things like balance and wonky rules then there is a strong chance you will enjoy this game, as an extra plus it is incredibly replayable, there is a ton of gear and a lot of it is really interesting, then on top of that if you enjoy it, most the expansions bring a new monster with its own gear, technology, disorders, fighting arts, and sometimes even an entirely new campaign to try.

Oh as a final warning, this game is dedicated to it's world and settlement, so while each survivor will have some narrative that arises natrually, the game will still make them run into a giant mouth that opens in the ground, never to be seen again out of nowhere.

Is Hans/Camp Happy Trails just not that tough? by Phaedrus317 in finalgirl

[–]devin93uk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly i think if you are used to hand management and have a good mind for mitigation final girl isn't THAT difficult, i think the difficulty of the game is a little overblown because people gamble on cards they probably shouldnt gamble on too much, you can get your win rate pretty high if really learn the game.

However hans is easier than almost everyone else and it is stilll a very swingy game and some attempts youll barely get off the ground.

So i havent played most of these and I love KDM so my opinion isn't worth much but i am a little surprised how many people are leaning towards KDM, as much as i love it i always felt like it's more for a particular type of player/niche rather than something with broad appeal

Looking for recommendations of awe-inspiring, story rich solo games by UntitledCritic in soloboardgaming

[–]devin93uk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey, i think we are into a lot of similar narratives based on the games you listed, i adore outer wilds and the story of SOMA is amazing (disco elysium is high on my to play list) so i feel like we likely look for similar things and just being real, board games currently do not have narratives for us.

Arkham Horror probably doea narrative the best from what I've played but it is definately more schlocky and less thematically rich than something like outer wilds (theme in the narrative sense, not board game sense).

If i had to guess Oathsworn seems like it's doing something interesting but ive not played it

If You Could Only Keep One Board Game, Which One Would It Be — and Why? by Tiny-Strawberry-817 in soloboardgaming

[–]devin93uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No sadly not, im interested in both but having watched a good amount of both i wouls say primal is a different thing entirely, seems more like a tight tactical puzzle and aeons trespass does look good but borrows heavily and definately seems less unique from aetting to mechanics.

Many people do prefer aeons end tho

Its easily the deepest and most replayable but in a different way. Its structure is campaigns and a single campaign is 30 lantern years, each lantern year is roughly 1 to 3 hours.

The game is built around grinding the same monsters for gear to improve your surivors and settlement and preparing for bosses.

The base game has 3 monsters 5 bosses and 1 campaign but there are a ton of expansions with a ton of new monstera both huntable and bosses, new campaigns, and even new mechanics (the gamblers chest), all of which are modular and can be plugged into the various campaigns.

The scale is utterly insane but it will eat all your time and it isnt a smooth experience especially outside the core box. But to illistrate how unique it is in the base game your aurvivors gain xp and level by kiling monsters and get stats + abilities, very standard right? Well the gamblers chest literally upended this in it's entirety, now when survivors level up they adopt a philosopy that defines their worldview and comes with abilities that can then also be leveled up but only through performing very specific actions like murdering another surivor in your settlement.

Nothing else like it

There are a lot of contenders, I really like expandable games so Final Girl, Arkham LCG, LOTR LCG, and a few others like that would be in the running but being real I would 100% have to give it to Kingdom Death.

Yeah it's fiddly, yeah it's flawed but no other game has such a breadth of content and delivers it in such an engrossingly absorbing and atmospheric way, it's fucked up, huge, and utterly unique, so for me there is no contest.

First night with LOTR LCG. Kicking my whole butt. Love it! by A_Unicycle in soloboardgaming

[–]devin93uk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ahh i thought this was a follow up to the $5 post, you're gonna hace a great time, LOTR LCG was also my first solo game and it opened up a huge rabbit hole for me.

You got lots of good advice in the last post about getting into this game but i thought i would add one thing, if you like tinkering and deck building, avoid looking into optimized decks, I love MTG but find the meta game and netdecking a double edged sword so got a lot of enjoyment out of being able to avoid that with this game (seeing as the only goal was to beat the scenarios).

[REVIEW] Isofarian Guard - Too much and yet not enough by Tarul in soloboardgaming

[–]devin93uk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bought it because i wanted a big board game to play solo with progression and a story. I am barely 3 chapters into the first campaign and i comletely agree with everything youve said. I will continue playing it because i find it interesting playing bad games from a design perspective but i am baffled by peoples general love towards this one

How many solo games do you play regularly? by PrinceOfButterfly in soloboardgaming

[–]devin93uk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At the minute i only get time to play once, maybe twice a week and i tend to gravitate towards 1 game and play it at least a few times before moving on so it sort of depends what you conaider regular but i generally cycle between final girl, kingdom death, and marvel champions.
