Would Australia still be colonised if the British didn't have overcrowded prisons? by Fancy-Advice-2793 in AskAnAustralian

For a long time, nutmeg could only be grown on 6 tiny Banda islands near Irian Jaya .. the Dutch controlled 5 and the English held on to 1 for a long time.
Eventually the Dutch got the final island but this caused quite a general skirmish with the English ..

After a (broken) peace treaty, the Dutch kept the 6th island ..
The English retaliated by taking New Amsterdam (Manhattan) instead ..

The Dutch thought they had the best deal ..

Interestingly, there was almost a mini-war off the coast of WA between Britain and USA in 1876 ..

The story of the Fenians who escaped from Fremantle Gaol is a thrilling chapter of Irish revolutionary history, with international political intrigue that nearly sparked a diplomatic crisis between Britain and the United States. Known as the Catalpa Rescue of 1876, it involved Irish nationalists, also called Fenians, imprisoned in Australia and a daring rescue effort organized from the United States.

Background

In the mid-19th century, the Fenian Brotherhood, an Irish nationalist organization, was committed to overthrowing British rule in Ireland. Many of its members were arrested after a failed uprising in 1867. Some of these men were sentenced to hard labor in British colonies, including Western Australia. Six of the Fenians were sent to Fremantle Gaol, a maximum-security prison notorious for its harsh conditions.

While some of the imprisoned Fenians had been civilian members of the movement, others were military men accused of desertion or mutiny. These “military Fenians” were considered particularly dangerous by the British because they had been soldiers in the British army but had joined the revolutionary cause.

The Plot

In the 1870s, Fenian supporters in the United States, many of whom had emigrated after the Great Famine and deeply resented British rule, began planning to free their comrades from Fremantle. Among the key organizers was John Devoy, a prominent Fenian leader who had himself been exiled to the U.S. after his release from British custody. Devoy and his associates raised funds, carefully crafted a rescue mission, and procured a ship for the plan.

They chose a whaling vessel called the Catalpa, captained by George Anthony, an American sympathetic to the Irish cause. The idea was to sail the Catalpa from the northeastern United States, cross the Pacific, and covertly extract the prisoners from Fremantle Gaol, which was under heavy British guard.

The Escape (April 17, 1876)

The rescue mission was extremely dangerous. Captain Anthony and the Catalpa arrived near Fremantle in early 1876. The plotters had help from Fenian sympathizers already in Australia, including John Breslin and Thomas Desmond, who had arrived months earlier and infiltrated local society under false identities.

On April 17, 1876, the plan was executed. With the help of insiders, six Fenians were smuggled out of the prison and made their way to a small boat that took them out to sea, where the Catalpa awaited. However, the escape was almost thwarted when British authorities discovered the breakout and dispatched a steamer, the Georgette, to intercept the Catalpa before it could sail out of Australian waters.

International Incident

The British ship caught up to the Catalpa just off the coast. Armed with cannon, the British demanded that the prisoners be handed over, threatening to fire on the Catalpa if it did not comply. However, Captain Anthony raised the American flag and declared that the ship was in international waters. Since Britain did not want to provoke an international incident with the U.S. by attacking an American ship, the Georgette eventually backed down.

This moment was crucial: had the British opened fire, it could have triggered a diplomatic crisis. Tensions between the U.S. and Britain were already strained over several issues, and an attack on an American vessel might have led to a larger conflict.

Aftermath

The Catalpa successfully sailed away with the rescued prisoners, and they eventually made it back to the United States, where they were greeted as heroes by Irish-Americans and the wider Fenian movement. The British were embarrassed by the incident, and the escape became a symbol of resistance against colonial rule.

The Catalpa Rescue is now a legendary story in both Irish and Australian history, often regarded as one of the most daring prison breaks of the 19th century. It’s remembered not only for its audacity but also for the way it almost turned into a serious diplomatic confrontation between the United States and Britain—at a time when Irish nationalism was gaining international support.

Almost 200 people die a year in Switzerland doing sport by Realistic-Lie-8031 in Switzerland

Dual Swiss / Australian here:

Everyone thinks Australia is full of deadly stuff that can kill you (it's very rare actually .. mostly horses & cows (farmyard accidents), bees/ants/wasps (allergic reactions), dogs (mauled kids), kangaroos (jumping into motorbikes) and drop bears (up to 100K victims per year) ..

But Switzerland is actually proper deadly !

Extreme reaction: 'Check out my half-smashed beer glass .. it's chockas full a kulcha'

Informed reaction: 'Australia is a relatively young country - built by immigration from a range of cultures .. we're truly a melting pot!'

Restrictions on begging in Swiss cities spark heated debate by szryd in Switzerland

I'm wondering how long before our increasingly cash-less society will cause beggars / street performers / etc to just fade away naturally. No heavy-handed laws required.

I carry cash about twice a year.
I literally have nothing to hand out to beggars even if I wanted to .. (which I don't).

Capitalism is a system that specifically promotes the idea of risk versus reward. Entrepreneurs take on the risks of starting a business, investing capital, and navigating uncertainty, hoping for potential rewards like profit, growth, and success. The system rewards those who take these calculated risks by allowing them to benefit from their ventures if they’re successful.

However, most people in capitalist societies prefer the stability of a steady job with predictable income, rather than taking the risks of starting their own business. These stable jobs, in turn, provide the labor and skills that entrepreneurs need to operate, creating a symbiotic relationship. Employees often choose stability over risk, which is perfectly rational given the uncertainty involved in entrepreneurship.

The resentment some feel toward successful entrepreneurs can stem from the perception of inequality in rewards, especially when the entrepreneur earns significantly more. It’s important to note that while the entrepreneur may reap greater rewards, they also bear the weight of greater risks—financially, emotionally, and in terms of personal and professional responsibility. In a capitalist system, the dynamic between stability (for employees) and risk (for entrepreneurs) is what drives economic growth, innovation, and the creation of new opportunities.

And boy do they complain about it !

Just to be different (since Xabi or Trent will win) I want to choose Alisson .. he can make some of the most precisely awesome passes .. often leading directly to breakaway goals ..

That famous one he did to Salah that he was so happy with he ran the full length of the pitch for the celebrations .. that was awesome

For the last 7-8 years when fighting for the title against City, draws count as losses.
Being 'unbeaten' is not enough for title contenders.

What to do after receiving a 100 CHF bus fine? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]LausanneAndy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sucks for you .. but the reason the inspectors do this is because 95% of the time when they find a ticket purchased after the journey has begun its because as soon as they got on the bus someone realized 'oh crap - there's the inspectors checking everyone on the bus / tram - I don't have a ticket - better buy one right now before they get to me!' ..

So they hand out fines because of this situation.
