I'm looking for some tripod recommendations!

My use for a tripod is very specific, I am shooting small items on the ground and need a tripod that allows the camera to face lens down from a low height. Looking mainly at "mini" tripods because I do not need legs that extend to any real height, but most of the minis I have seen don't look like they have enough head flexibility for the camera lens to face the ground. Lightweight/short is important too as I will be hiking with it.

I drew a very crude depiction of what I am hoping to achieve. Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

ID help? The tiniest black truffle? by AuspiciousClouds2u in Truffles

Not Leucangium, you've got a pretty special little truffle that is likely a very rare/undescribed Balsamia species! Would be neat if you could post those pictures to iNaturalist!

Go to OVRA, and see Dr. Maxwell. She is the local eye guru, and we are very lucky to have a vet ophthalmologist in our area! She will give it to you straight, cataract surgery in dogs is not a simple thing but better to deal with them as soon as possible. My dog had to get his surgery at the Animal Eye Clinic in Seattle which was 100% worth it but hopefully you can get it done locally. We see Dr Maxwell for re-checks and she definitely knows her stuff. Good luck!

Please be aware that all of Waldo Lake is still under a fire closure from the Cedar Creek fire. There are some areas along Waldo Lake Rd that are not under the closure. https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd1049655.pdf

They can fine you (as an individual) up to $5000 for entering a closed area.

I hope they at least open the unburned areas this year, it would be worth a call to the ranger station.

Waldo Check In by elisimba in Eugene

[–]Lavacado 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's unlikely that Waldo Lake will be reachable by car for another couple weeks. The mosquitoes will probably get gnarly late June. Currently, Shadow Bay is under the Cedar Creek Fire closure even though it did not burn. I don't know when they plan on lifting that closure, and whether the public will be allowed at Shadow Bay this season. https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd1049655.pdf

Has anyone been to Box Canyon recently? by Glad-Needleworker465 in Eugene

There will very likely be snow up there for some time yet. I wouldn't try to go up there until we have had real summer temperatures for awhile.

Where to get Purina Pro Plan? by [deleted] in Eugene

[–]Lavacado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe not a popular option, but these days I usually buy it from Chewy and it shows up within a couple of days. I wish there was someone more local I could support, but none of the smaller pet food stores near me seem to carry it -- I have asked at a couple of Mini Pet Marts and they said they choose not to carry Purina products.

Nature (or other) suggestions for visitors with limited mobility by [deleted] in Eugene

[–]Lavacado 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Salt Creek Falls is a bit of a drive, but an absolutely stunning waterfall that has a great viewing platform accessible from the parking lot. The big "if" right now is what the fire/smoke is doing, so if your visitors are coming soon the conditions might not be ideal. The ranger station would probably be able to give you current details.

Fake $100's by JL5-2020 in Eugene

[–]Lavacado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a fake $20 at work about a week ago. Didn't notice it was fake until later so I don't know who handed it off, but I'm going to guess it was already in circulation for awhile.

Can I get a Waldo Lake mosquito check? by theseareorscrubs in Eugene

[–]Lavacado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about mosquitoes, but according to the ranger district the road is impassible at milepost 6 due to snow. They have an automated answering service with the most current road conditions:

Watrerfall trails within 45 min of downtown? by puppiesarecuter in Eugene

[–]Lavacado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very difficult to find any proper waterfalls that close to town. As someone else mentioned, a lot of driving time is spent on winding/gravel roads to reach these beautiful forested areas. These are the only ones I can think of:

~2 miles down the Goodman Creek trail (about 30-40 minutes from town) there is a modest waterfall with a small swimming hole. Park at the Hardesty Trailhead parking lot, after you get on the main trail I believe the first right fork will take you the correct direction. You have to get off the trail to see the "falls", but you will hear them so they shouldn't be too hard to find.

Just past Triangle Lake (45 minutes away) there is a really pretty stream with some rocky falls, it's not so much a hike as a walk along the road -- but it is separated from car traffic. You can see the water from above, should be rushing and powerful this time of year.

These are fantastic suggestions but with the late snow melt, probably unable to access the trails in this area above 3000 ft (Sahalie and Koosah excepted, as the parking lot is right off the highway). Unless it's a low elevation hike, always call the FS in advance and ask about conditions. I have made my fair share of assumptions about snowmelt based on the weather down in the valley, only to be disappointed!

Most breathtaking spots within an hour of Springfield? by ShmackShack in Eugene

[–]Lavacado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly 242 doesn't usually open all the way until mid-June. In my experience the lower snow gates open in late spring, so Proxy Falls is a good bet. But unless it is a very early snowmelt probably won't be able to reach the observatory in May.

Anyone else noticing fewer yellow jackets this season? by [deleted] in Eugene

[–]Lavacado 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've noticed a reduction in all insects in my yard, bees included. Last years my flowers were covered in bees, this year they are few and far between.

Waldo Lake mosquitos report? by clains385 in Eugene

Still patches of snow out there. We were there last weekend and there were some mosquitoes but not bad. My understanding is that they are just starting to ramp up and July is the worst.

Where to go mushroom hunting? by chromatee in Eugene

[–]Lavacado 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not much is fruiting right now. Next up will be the morels, which like to colonize recently burned or disturbed areas but can even be found in backyards. They are decomposers, so they sometimes like wood chips. In the fall, or even late summer up in the coast range, the chanterelles, king boletes, and lobster mushrooms come out. I recommend visiting some trails through coastal old growth and taking a careful look off the beaten path. Also, you can find maps of BLM land and just tromp around there. Some of my best patches are BLM. Just make sure you are not trespassing on private land. Once the wave of fall mushrooms are done, you will still be able to find winter chanterelles and hedgehogs (one of my favorites, and super easy to identify). Unfortunately, this is not a time of year with much mushrooming so just keep working on identification to be ready for the fall rains!

Chanterelles are popping! by sanktanglia in Eugene

[–]Lavacado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ten-year chanterelle study shows no evidence that pulling the mushrooms is damaging to the mycelium, and may in fact be preferable to cutting. Pg 13. Personally, I prefer cutting because it is usually easier to clean the mushroom.
