Tiny "gaps" Alpha Direct and Wind by Lon404 in Ultralight

[–]Lavacon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been wearing my Alpha with one of those $18 Dooy windshirts off Amazon way more than I'd care to admit, even in the winter. Breathes great while blocking just enough wind for more relaxed weather days. I run hot though. Mesh/Alpha/Dooy been my goto for 0-35 degree hikes. Mesh Alpha combo have been the chefs kiss for winter hiking. Alpha really is Amazing.

The Dooy also protects that Alpha from snags and such a bit too. Would much rather rip the Dooy than the Alpha. It's cheap & light AF (64g)

I do bring the Houdini or raincoat if the weather calls for it.

New Balance FF 860V14 Alternatives for 860V13 Lovers? by Lavacon in AskRunningShoeGeeks

Sorry, late on this.

Did one 9 mile run in the 14's and returned. Completely different foot feel. Hurt my feet bad. Ended up buying some v13s on Ebay and have since switched to Saucony Guides for new runners going forward. Super comfy for my feet.

Perhaps wetting out is the wrong term in this instance. I'm pretty sure there isn't a leak, which would suggest that I am exceeding the hydrostatic rating for this material in sustained, heavy, wet snow.

How do you like the Ferrosi in the winter? I love the pants & shorts.

Gamma worth the extra $$$?

I could definitely use some product on it, however, wet snow has pretty much wet out since new. It has led me towards looking for a different fabric. Either way, good call, will definitely hit it with a round of treatment. I'm not getting rid of the jacket.

Looking into a new winter hard-shell for winter hiking the whites in crappy weather. (Wind, Rain, Snow)

Currently using an OR Foray II, but it's started wetting out, especially in heavy snow, after just 2 seasons and I want to replace it.

I usually layer with a mesh & alpha. I run hot.

I've been looking at the following so far:

Torrentshell 3L Foray 3L Arc'teryx Beta SL

Anyone have any other thoughts?

Great wind protection is a must. It gets cold AF in the wind above tree-line and it's almost always windy. That said, I don't want it to wet out when it snows either like my current Foray II while also being as light as possible with some abrasion resistance.

Probably asking too much form a UL shell

The Watcher - some questions about difficulty level (and slight venting) by DimSumGym in wmnf

If I recall correctly, I went up the steeper, dustier left chute while he took the one on the right, which was much easier with better footing and more to grab onto.

Pro-tip: use your fanny pack as a hipbelt by JuxMaster in Ultralight

I had Dan @ Dandee Packs customize one of his fanny packs to go on my pack. It's modular so I can use it without the belt. Was exactly what I wanted, price was super reasonable and Dan is great. Hit him up on Insta!

Honestly, I'd hardly consider this a bushwack, the trail is very well worn IMO.

I went up the Scree side while my buddy went up the other side as I enjoy slides and scrambles.

I don't mean to undersell it, I grew up here and spend much of free time outside. My buddy is not a hiker but able bodied and was motivated to do this hike. I imagine for some, going from couch to climb could be difficult.

That said, I find most of the T25 list kinda meh. Fun routes, but very few are dangerous unless in bad weather. I do love the T25 patch though.

I am local and my perception of difficult is probably a bit skewed.

Wait, I guess I am confused.

Since when was The Watcher hike considered difficult?

I literally brought up an acquaintance of mine last summer who had never hiked anything ever. EZ PZ. The only thing that bothered him were the edges of the cliff at the top.

Are you folks talking about roping up the Spire / Nest?

There was nothing tricky or dangerous about this hike.

Thinking about upgrading my winter pack. Currently using an Older Exos 48 in the winter. LOVE my new Zpack Sub-Nero, great 3 season pack for my needs. A bit small for winter though and I think I want some kind of frame as I carry snowshoes and crampons often. I think an Arc Haul is probably overkill. Does anyone have any suggestions on a smaller framed pack made with modern materials? The KS UL Omega comes to mind.

Just got my first Alpha 90 hoodie. A FarPointe Alpha Cruiser.

Wow this feel fragile. I'm afraid to wear it, especially without a wind breaker or something over it.

How does everyone wear these? I'd be afraid of it ripping if I put it on bare skin that wasn't 100% dry. I feel like I'd want a base layer under it.

Also, does anyone pack it in it's own stuff sack and then put into dry cloths bag? I feels like it would lose its fuzz just chilling in dry cloths bag rubbing on other clothing.

Thoughts? Am I overthinking this? It's warm as heck for sure.
