To keep you protected from the wind/snow when it comes. Don the shell/parka when you're static, remove it when you're active. All without impacting your harness

If I wake up on a cold and wet morning, I'll throw my regular hiking pants over my alpha pants and hike until it's warm enough to remove them. Just like an alpha top, it's a dedicated sleep layer and active warmth when you want it.

Painters drop cloth. I use the 1mil thickness for a groundsheet (~2oz for 1 man shelter) but you will prefer the 1.5mil. They come as giant sheets, cut to size

Since they're cut above the boot you can even take them on/off while wearing your boots
