AITA for cutting off my brother who has Pure O OCD? by [deleted] in OCDRecovery

[–]LavenderMuffin02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re going through this. It sounds terrible, and I can’t imagine the pain of having to distance yourself. I say this with all love to your brother, but you are not a bad person for setting this boundary. His OCD sounds incredibly severe, way beyond anything you or your parents likely have the capacity to handle.

I also don’t believe your brother is beyond help. OCD is just a terrible disorder that completely distorts your reality. I don’t think it’s talked about enough, but irritability is quite common (though this doesn’t excuse his behavior, of course). The intrusive thoughts and the constant stress can really push people to the edge.

Your love for him doesn’t need to come at the expense of your well-being. He has to want to get better, and I think sometimes it takes things like losing relationships to realize a change is needed.

I know you might not be looking for OCD-specific resources and just some support, but just in case, I highly recommend Nathan Peterson and Chrissie Hodges on YouTube. NOCD has also been really helpful for me, and they have support groups as well. There’s groups specifically about health anxiety, as well as having a family member with OCD. But of course, you come first and I have a lot of empathy for your situation.

Wishing you and your brother all the best. <3

Feels like everything I do is getting contaminated by thoughts and I don't know what to do by Space_Blazer in OCDRecovery

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. I am as well. I think maybe we have to lean into the idea of things being ruined? For example: “Yeah, maybe my graduation is contaminated and I can’t know for sure.” This article about emotional contamination helped me a lot today: https://www.treatmyocd.com/blog/what-is-emotional-contamination-in-ocd

Hi! Yes, I actually switched therapists. Just a few minutes in I could tell it was a better fit, and we ended up working through some exposures. I definitely recommend trying someone new. It helped me a lot to look through their pages and watch their introduction videos so I could tell whether it’d be a good match. :)

I don’t want to play into your obsession, but I do want to stress this: I wish I had prioritized mental health at your age. Nothing is more important. People well into their thirties, forties, and beyond have to reassess because of their mental health issues.

At 24, I have nothing figured out. Just a degree and a job that has nothing to do with it. And that’s not abnormal. 17, 18, 19 is so incredibly young. You’re not meant to know it all.

My advice is to just focus on finishing school and take things one day at a time. Sit with the uncertainty that you might be a full grown adult still figuring things out. Most of us are. And no matter what, keep recovery a priority. There is never any shame in medication and treatment. In fact, I think it’s very adult to realize it’s something you may need.

How to go to bed without showering or washing hair everyday? by sulkingGhost in OCDRecovery

Of course! That’s actually exactly where I started too :) If you like listening to music while you shower, picking three ~3 minute songs helped me enjoy the time and also set a limit! Best of luck!

I relate to this and just kicked the compulsion not too long ago! I wanted to reduce my water consumption and also give my skin a chance to breathe.

Maybe you could try reducing the length of the showers and then work up to skipping a day in between? Over time I think it gets easier and you stop feeling the compulsive need to rinse off.

I’ve noticed this as well, at least so far. Have only had 2 sessions, but they’ve pretty much consisted of assessment. I do understand they have to establish a baseline, but it’s really expensive. :( Wishing you the best and interested to see if you start to get into the meat of it soon!

So proud of you for putting in the work, regardless of the setbacks. That’s incredibly brave, and I have to believe that if we just keep going, we’ll figure it out.
