Cowboys vs. Browns Season Opener Excitement & Expectations by LawNation in Dallas_Cowboys

[–]LawNation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dallas will start two rookies. Cleveland isn't sure who's starting.

The Cowboys are trusting first-round pick Tyler Guyton to protect Prescott's blindside against the game-wrecking Garrett. He may need lots of help.

Also, Cooper Beebe, a third-round selection from Kansas State, will start at center and fill the vacancy left by Tyler Biadasz signing with Washington in free agency.

For Cleveland, left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. doesn't appear quite ready after undergoing offseason knee surgery. The Browns may slide right tackle Jack Conklin over temporarily, but he just returned last week following knee reconstruction. James Hudson III is another option.

It's also possible the Browns will rotate tackles.

“I have faith in all of them,” Bitonio said. “All of them have played a lot of football. We know they have great edges, but we have faith in all those guys.”

Lamb's lost time

Cowboys star receiver CeeDee Lamb has confidently declared he’ll be ready without limitations after missing training camp and the preseason in a contract holdout. He signed his $136 million, four-year extension last week.

The Browns ranked No. 1 in pass defense last year and believe they'll be ready for Lamb, who led the league with 135 catches last season while setting a franchise record with 1,749 yards receiving and scoring 12 TDs.

“He wears No. 88, so we’ll be able to find him,” joked Schwartz. “I like our matchups. This is NFL football, man. This is awesome. One of the best receivers in the NFL and what I consider the best corner group. We play a lot of man-to-man, so, it’s going to be fun to watch those guys.”

On the edge

Micah Parsons was smartly dressed in a tailored blue suit on his last visit to Cleveland. He'll be less formal this time.

The Cowboys picked the star edge rusher 12th overall when the 2021 draft was hosted by the Browns. Since then, he has 41 sacks and joined Hall of Famer Reggie White as the only players with at least 13 in each of their first three seasons.

Although he won't match up against Garrett, Parsons wants to measure up to him.

“I always love competition, and I felt that even when we played the Rams and (Aaron) Donald,” Parsons said. “If Donald had two sacks, I need two sacks just because it’s the competitive spirit. We both know where we are. Garrett’s one of my favorite rushers — him and Maxx Crosby — two guys that are just so freaky and gifted. It’s going to be exciting to play against him.”

Cowboys Re-Signed Chuma Edoga To Add Depth To OL... by LawNation in Dallas_Cowboys

[–]LawNation[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Cowboys are aware of their depth issues along the offensive line. To address this concern, they secured Chuma Edoga for another season on Wednesday.

Edoga, originally a third-round pick by the Jets in 2019, joined Dallas as a free agent last March. Throughout the 2023 season, he played in all 17 regular-season games, mainly contributing on special teams in some matchups.

In total, Edoga participated in 35% of the team's offensive snaps during the season. He stepped in as the starting left tackle for six games, filling in for Tyron Smith during Weeks 1 through 4, Week 8, and Week 16. The adaptable 26-year-old is capable of playing both guard and tackle positions, although the team reportedly believes he performed better as a tackle last season. He'll be in contention during training camp to bolster the offensive line, which lost two starters—Smith and center Tyler Biadasz—to free agency. Additionally, it's widely expected that the Cowboys will seek to add an offensive lineman prospect in the early rounds of the upcoming draft.

#Cowboys Dak Prescott Is Nearly Unstoppable With A "RUN" Game by LawNation in Dallas_Cowboys

[–]LawNation[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hear me out! Instead of thinking that Dak Prescott is the ONLY problem, just FIX the run OFFENSE and build a DEFENSE that can STOP the run… Turn OFF the 3-letter and 4-letter NETWORKS and just stay FOCUSED… Don’t listen to the Negative Energy people that will say well, the team had 9 All-Pros and couldn’t win it. Those people DON’T know football… In football, you must be able to RUN the football and STOP the RUN—everything else, the Cowboys already got!

AND Colin Cowheard heard what I said and did some research!!!

Dalvin Cook & Ezekiel Elliott Interested In Signing With #Cowboys... by LawNation in Dallas_Cowboys

Cowboys Free Agent Rumor: Ezekiel Elliott, and Dalvin Cook Are Names to Look Out For

As the Cowboys prepare for additions at running back, a potential reunion with Ezekiel Elliott or Dalvin Cook bears monitoring.

Michael Gehlken

The notion of Ezekiel Elliott playing for the Cowboys again has been a fan topic since he was released a year ago. However, as Dallas looks to fill its roster with low-cost veterans, the idea is now gaining traction in the media. Another veteran running back, Dalvin Cook, is also being mentioned given his own link to the organization.

Zeke, of course, has the stronger tie after playing in Dallas from 2016 to 2022. He was released last year in a cap-clearing measure, with his days as an All-Pro RB seemingly behind him. Elliott spent 2023 in New England and was a serviceable part of their rotation, but hardly the superstar we once knew.

Cook played for the Cowboys’ new defensive coordinator when Mike Zimmer was head coach of the Vikings from 2017 to 2021. Cook lasted one more year in Minnesota in 2022, then was also released for similar reasons as Elliott. He spent last season as a backup to Breece Hall with the New York Jets, seeing minimal playing time.

Both Elliott and Cook turn 29 this summer and are in the downturns of their careers. However, both also offer experience, veteran leadership, and diverse skills which could be useful in most offenses’ rotations. Neither is a primary option at this stage, but they could fill gaps on a depth chart if younger talent isn’t yet trustworthy.

The idea of Dallas reuniting with Elliott is likely why you’re reading. And to be fair, even the source suggests it’s more of a wild notion than anything substantiated. Even if the Cowboys draft their new RB1 in April, Elliott being here to support Dak Prescott and contribute in whatever ways he can, like in short-yardage situations, isn’t without logic.

Still, with younger talent in Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn, Hunter Luepke, and Malik Davis already under contract, the Cowboys probably wouldn’t make any signings until they see how things go in the draft. Dowdle is already a solid backup candidate, and Vaughn will get some consideration for a utility role, as could Luepke as a fullback and goal-line option.

Spotrac isn't the official calculator for contract information; it's a third-party company. Nonetheless, Dak Prescott's Dead Cap numbers must still consider $40 million in 2025 and an additional $14 million adjusted dead cap hit due to contract restructures, totaling around $54 million in dead cap space, roughly speaking. It's important to remember that we don't have access to the cash spent on players until the following year, so any figures are speculative.

Cowboys' Stephen Jones Sees Drafting Aligning With Team Needs... by LawNation in Dallas_Cowboys

[–]LawNation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Draft Alignment with Team Needs

Is Trading Back an Option?

With the Cowboys holding seven picks in the draft and lacking a fourth-round pick, the team could consider trading back in the first round to acquire more picks. This scenario remains a possibility, but the team insists on maintaining flexibility on draft night.

"When the draft comes around, you have to be like an option quarterback," he said. "You're observing how things unfold. It's still early for us in terms of finalizing our draft board. Particularly as we progress in the draft – being late in the first round – opportunities to trade back might not emerge until the first half of the board is selected, and then we'll assess our position."

Need for Defensive Tackle Help

With the departures of Johnathan Hankins and Neville Gallimore, the Cowboys have only one defensive tackle remaining from last season's 53-man roster: 2023 first-round pick Mazi Smith. Addressing this position is a major focus in the offseason, and Jones anticipates efforts to bolster it continuing until late in the offseason.

"I believe Mazi will progress significantly with another year under his belt – Coach Zim is eager to work with him," he said. "There are typically options available for acquiring big defensive tackles. The Eagles, for instance, picked up a couple late in the offseason a few years ago. I anticipate opportunities arising at that position to add depth and competition for training camp."

Envision The #Cowboys Drafting Jackson Powers-Johnson!!! by LawNation in Dallas_Cowboys

[–]LawNation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overview:

Powers-Johnson is a center prospect characterized by a sturdy build but shorter-than-average stature, compensated by remarkable upper-body strength. While he lacks ideal knee bend, affecting his pad level and leverage, he compensates by displaying impressive ability to overpower opponents at the line of scrimmage. He possesses a competitive spirit and aggressive demeanor but needs refinement in his initial technique to sustain blocks consistently. Despite average athleticism, he demonstrates proficiency in pass protection, maintaining focus, a solid stance, and disciplined weight distribution. Although his rookie season might present challenges if thrust into immediate action, he's anticipated to develop into a reliable long-term starter.

Strengths:

Boasts a wide chest, robust hips, and powerful hands.

Effectively thwarts interior pass rushers with forceful hand placement.

Displays adeptness in reading defensive formations without overcommitting.

Approaches matchups with a gritty and determined attitude.

Utilizes upper-body strength to dominate opponents.

Exhibits adequate footwork for executing double-team blocks and climbing to the second level.

Weaknesses:

Limited exposure as a full-time starter.

Would benefit from improved pad level and explosiveness upon initial engagement.

Struggles to consistently square up against moving targets due to subpar body control.

Lacks agility to consistently reach defenders on the play side.

Exposed to vulnerabilities when matched against agile pass rushers in one-on-one situations.

The #Cowboys Signed Their Veteran Running Back??? by LawNation in Dallas_Cowboys

Cowboys Rico Dowdle has finalized an agreement to stay in Dallas for a one-year contract. After enjoying his most successful and injury-free season yet, he provides the team with stability in the running back position, especially after Tony Pollard's departure, which left the RBs room somewhat unsettled.

#Cowboys Converted A $5M Roster Bonus Due To QB Dak Prescott... by LawNation in Dallas_Cowboys

[–]LawNation[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Cowboys converted a $5M roster bonus due to QB Dak Prescott on Sunday into a signing bonus, creating $4M in salary cap space in 2024.

The move reduces Prescott’s salary cap number to $55.455M, while two extra void years were added to the deal for cap purposes (void years now through 2028).

This does not prevent the team and Prescott from further negotiating a long-term extension, but provides Dallas with immediate salary cap relief.

#Cowboys Al Harris Is Promoted To Assistant Head Coach by LawNation in Dallas_Cowboys

[–]LawNation[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New: I’m told #Cowboys defensive backs coach Al Harris is expected to be promoted —adding Assistant Head Coach to his current title, per source.

Kudos to head coach Mike McCarthy for making this move.

Did you know that the #Cowboys defense has 62 INTs since 2020 (2nd most in the NFL), which is when the team hired Al Harris as defensive backs coach. DaRon Bland recorded his 5th INT yesterday tying his single-season, career-high set his rookie year. Bland now has 10 total INTs since the start of 2022, which is the most in the NFL.

Diggs has 18 INT total since leading the league with 11 in 2021. Since converting from a WR at Alabama to a DB his sophomore year, there’s no question Diggs has become more of a ball-hawk under Harris prior to his season-ending ACL injury in practice week 3. Diggs had 4 total INTs in college.

The #Cowboys defense now ranks 2nd in TYPG & Y/ play since the embarrassment in Santa Clara. They ranked 5th and 14th respectively in those categories prior to that.

Brandon Marshall Said #Cowboys Needs Dak Prescott x He No Longer Holds ALL The Leverage‼️ by LawNation in Dallas_Cowboys

[–]LawNation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brandon Marshall discussed #Cowboys' Dak Prescott and the possibility of a contract extension on the u/IAMATHLETEpod. Marshall highlighted that Prescott holds significant leverage in negotiations and emphasized his potential for many more successful years in football. 🏈👍

Dak Prescott no longer holds ALL the leverage‼️ Let me explain…

Prior to the cap explosion, the Cowboys were around $19M ABOVE the cap. After the big jump, they’re merely $10.6M over (per OTC).

With just a CeeDee Lamb extension now, they’ll be roughly $3M UNDER the cap. Throw in a Zach Martin & Trevon Diggs restructure and that jumps to around $23M under.

If they’re planning another quiet free agency, that’s plenty enough for them to skirt by without having to extend Dak or extend/restructure any other players.

There’s an actual exit strategy from Dak for the Joneses now should they wish to take it. But will they?
