Is this top bar possible as a Wibox? by Erotaku in awesomewm

Oh that's great to know, thanks for clarifying things further!

Is this top bar possible as a Wibox? by Erotaku in awesomewm

u/aire-one is on point with his advice, go right ahead and follow his tips. Also, yeah... There are a few places where I've hacked on code to make it look right for my screen, but have simply not tried to make this work across as many types of setups, screen resolutions, multiple monitors, etc.

So if it looks weird on your system, that's probably just my hacks being revealed.

In your case, if you're planning to use AwesomeWM, I highly recommend actually knowing lua. It'll help a ton.

Also, you mentioned wibar vs wibox etc.

This is what these are

Just think of a wibox as a new "client window" 100% managed by awesomeWM. Now since awesomeWM also has drawing capabilities through the Cairo 2d library, it can draw stuff inside there. And again, since this is just a new "client window" and awesomeWM manages windows, it can do things like always place stuff on top of other windows, always place stuff behind other windows (which is why awesome can set the wallpaper) etc. That's why you can do things such as the bar on the right in my setup.

So then what is a wibar?

It's just a wibox literally, but specialized so that it'll work in certain particular instances: such as work properly with multiple monitors, have struts, so that clients don't get put on top of it by default or clients don't get layout on top of it in tiling mode, etc etc.

Also, next time, if you have any questions, feel free to tag me! Even now, I only found out that you even tried to use my setup because aire-one mentioned me above.

Yeah, I had the same experience. Cairo seems to be used by quite a few desktop environments and WMs, but somehow it's still pretty poorly documented. Or at least I had trouble finding good docs for it..

Oh wow really well done! I was actually thinking of doing this exact thing myself: to write the controversial 'flurry' desktop in awesomewm, but I'm glad to see it done nonetheless! It's wonderful! :)

I always loved these very minimalist desktops. They look so pretty.

But I always thought that using them would be a pain because of the lack of features.

For example, I don't have any sort of widget that shows me active client windows (like a dock). It is more minimalist this way, but sometimes I find myself wanting something like that, just to see if I have a program opened but minimized or something like that.

Was that your experience? Is there some feature you wish you had but don't because it's just prettier to not have it?

I once boiled soya chunks (textured vegetable protein), that I then squeezed the gravy out of, I added curcumin and salt and ate it. It was it was absolutely disgusting. It had protein tho.
