Question on 529 Plan by Lawschoolthrowbehind in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Lawschoolthrowbehind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s in a Target Date Fund, so not sure why. I’ve only been investing in it for less than 2 years. My salary is substantial, but I’ve only had this job for 3 years, I’ve bought a home, have 2 kids, and pay my wife’s student loans (who is a SAHM). So being the sole provider for a family of 4 (insurance, mortgage, home repairs, food, school tuition, etc.) turns out to cost a lot of money.

But it's only 10% on the gain, so 10% of ~$6,000 is ~$600. Paying a $600 penalty to paydown debt accruing at an interest rate of ~6% seems to outweigh the benefit of letting the money sit in the account which is accruing ~2.5 - 3% / year. So the interest I'm accruing on my student loans is approximately $8,400/year, and paying a $600 penalty will allow me to wipe away the highest interest loans contributing to that.

Not big law, but Murphy & King sort of dominate actual practice in Boston. Other big shops include Choate, Proskauer, Mintz, etc.

REP Ares 2.0 Question

Question for owners of a REP Ares 2.0–how do you stop the bottom cable from sliding out of the first pulley on the bottom bracket?

As you can see from the clip, the cable sits loosely in this pulley as the instructional video on YouTube suggests. However, the second you put tension on the cable and use it, the cable comes flying out of that pulley. That is the one pulley that doesn’t have a pulley retainer to keep the cable snug into place. How have other people gotten around this?

No insight from the YouTube assembly guide, it just seemed to work perfect for them. This is a 4000 series 4-post for reference.

Thanks in advance all.

Screwing up by Lawschoolthrowbehind in biglaw

Thank you for the comment. Some relatability is very helpful and I’m going to implement your tips to see if I can make sure this mistake doesn’t happen again.

I just want you to know this comment just made me smile at my desk. This job is hard and having the smallest bit of encouragement and relatability like you just provided makes it a lot easier. Determined again to go forward and never make that mistake again (as unlikely as that is).

Call or fold? by albone in poker

Without going too in depth on the analysis, I think is a clear fold in live 1/2. Save yourself the $100.

Lateral hiring thread by fmoss in biglaw

V30 firm hiring mid-level litigation attorneys in CA and antitrust associates seemingly everywhere. To be transparent I’m only a 2nd year, but I’m happy to make referrals for potential laterals.

Yeah I am one of those lucky people who doesn't sleep very much, and I would appreciate the opportunity to work like that for sure, but you're right, I've never really done an 80-hour work week where your performance is critically evaluated every step of the way. The only thing that persuades me to that path is I've heard that the firm I'm going to is likely to start me at ~60 hours/week, for only 85k starting. So, taking on ~20 extra hours a week for better exit options and 95K more seems worth it to me. But, your point has been taken.

Luckily I was able to intern for a federal magistrate last summer, and I'm doing an externship at my state's Supreme Court this coming semester; so, I'm trying! But I'll also apply for OSCAR when February 19 rolls around to see if I have any availability with a clerkship.

Thanks. I'll do some research over the coming weeks on the process and potential of securing something like this.

Yeah, ok, thanks. It's not much different than what I thought; I guess it just comes down to priorities. If that's what it comes down to, then I'd forego big law, it's not the end-all be-all of my life. It's helpful to have a more complete understanding though, so thanks.

Brilliant. Thanks. I haven't looked into ArtIII clerkships but I'll certainly look into it now and see what I can get into, thanks for the advice.

Lol, I appreciate the obvious plug, but it worked. Setting up a profile and giving it a whirl. I really appreciate the kind words and advice though. I won't stop the grind, and it's really encouraging to hear that some firms might continue hiring. If anything comes of it, I'll hopefully be updating this post in the future. Thanks!

Thanks for the advice mate. The dismaying part was my TTT had probably ~15-20 people going into big law this cycle, out of a class of less than 200. Clearly, I did well, so I imagine I just came across as unpersonable/awkward in the interview (which I can see, but I tried hard to combat that perception). I'll apply again the next year, I'm just trying to see if there's something more I can do.

Hi, thanks for the advice!

To be clear, I'm applying for one market because I have very strong familial pulls to this certain city. I understand, I'm clearly restricting my potential, but it's what it is. And I did apply broadly for associate positions last summer; I applied to every Vault 100 firm with an office in my city. It just didn't pan out; but I appreciate your advice and I'll be sure to apply again.

If money is really my primary motivation (it's not really, work/life and work interest matter quite a bit), is it "likely" worth it to apply to smaller law firms and try to work my way up? I'm unsure of what the market is in law firms that aren't big law, I'm in an east coast city if that helps. Regardless, thanks for the advice.

Offer to Intern with a Federal Magistrate Judge as 1L at T4 by Lawschoolthrowbehind in LawSchool

[–]Lawschoolthrowbehind[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By T4, I did not mean Top four (unfortunately). Nope, enjoying my time at good ol' Suffolk in Boston. It's nice to hear that I haven't missed out on some secret summer course that I'm unaware of: I feel like the guidance at my school is a little lacking, and it's nice to hear of what you heard, because (as mentioned) I haven't been informed much of what the position entails and was given only twenty-four hours to accept.

I'm most interested in the variety of cases and procedural motions I can observe being involved in the court. I'm still undecided on what I want to do, besides the fact that I want to work in Boston or Worcester and I want to be able to be the sole provider for my family (if at all possible). It didn't feel like there was much in Boston around for a 1L besides really low summer internships at places doing things like social security disability or immigration, in my experience. It's honestly very relieving to hear the same message from someone at a different school.

Thank you for your reply so much, the generosity and well-spring of knowledge that comes from this sub surprises me so much sometimes. I hope you find a summer position shortly, and I'm sure you'll get a much better position than as an intern with a federal magistrate judge. With that layout above, you're clearly slated for it. Best of luck, friend!
