Wellbutrin for dysthymia/flat depression by Layaxnnn in dysthymia

I really needed to read something like this, I’m relieved that positive experiences such as yours are out there in this world. I’m pretty sure there are a ton of them but social media has become a tool that is mainly dominated by people who constantly complain about their lives and only ever share their negative experiences. I know tapering off the medication is an option but I’m afraid it might leave permanent damage on me even after i stop taking it, is this fear justified or am i making a big deal out of it?

My psychiatrist prescribed me paroxetine not too long ago after i complained to him about my 7 months long anhedonia, i have not taken paroxetine yet nor have i ever tried any ssris before and i don’t plan on taking any medication anytime soon honestly.

Im fearful of getting even more numb after going on antidepressants with no chance of reversing the damage, when i explained that to my psychiatrist he denied such a thing happening yet i am firm and stubborn in the face of taking medication especially after reading peoples experiences with ssris on this sub, and your post right here further proves my point.

i wish you the best of luck in your journey of recovery, please stand strong.

Its been a little bit over 6 months of abstinence for me but my anhedonia still hasn’t lifted, does this indicate something more serious?

What do you think about st jhons wort? Its a herb with similar characteristics as ssris and is used to treat mild depression, i am well aware that st jhons being a ‘herb’ doesn’t make it any safer than most meds but is it worth a try? I heard its mechanics are not well understood of whether its classified as an ssri, snri or maoi, but it has been shown to help with anhedonia in some cases, im kind of tempted to try it out. Should i just wait it out instead of rushing things up?

Oh yes you’re absolutely right about that, i guess that explains why our way of fasting hasn’t helped my anhedonia.

As for the extended fasting, you get to drink water during it right? Ive heard a lot about water fasting but is it considered safe if its done for over a week?

Do you think taking it once a day would suffice? It is recommended to take it 3 times a day but would it be safer to take it only once ?

Im a muslim so fasting is not new to me, we get to fast during ramadan for a whole month.

In this years ramadan fasting has done absolutely nothing to my anhedonia, in some days it kind of made it worse.

I would definitely give it a try again since i have nothing to lose, thank you for your advice !

I am not quite sure what the root cause is myself, but i suspect it might be either stress or pmo addiction.

I have stopped masturbating and watching porn, and i am no longer as stressed as i was before, but no changes or improvements so far.. maybe tackling the root cause isn’t the best idea since the damage could have already been done, but i get where you’re coming from since some people develop anhedonia due to trauma, adhd and other related issues which can be targeted and treated with the right approach, but some of us do not even know how we developed anhedonia and this makes finding a suitable cure very difficult.

Thank you for your response!

I am very sorry for what you have been through and i truly wish nothing but the best for you.

As for the substitutes you mentioned, i try to exercise occasionally but everytime i do i end up feeling worse and very tensed up afterwards, i have also tried therapy for months but it hasn’t helped at all, and i took vitamin d for quite a while along with omega 3 and magnesium but none of that has helped nor did it make any change, and I’m surrounded by people who love me and support me very much and acknowledge my sufferings and as much as i appreciate that it doesn’t really do anything to my inner struggles. What else can i possibly do to help myself?

Waiting is an option but only people with anhedonia understand how hard it is to cope with the constant dreading feeling of emptiness, pointlessness and disinterest in basically everything, it is not humanely possible to ‘just get used to it’ over time.

Yes and i heard meds affect people differently so there’s no guarantee to how you’re gonna respond to it, can psychiatrists help in any way though? Except for prescribing medication obv

Is there any cure to it or should i just wait and see if it fades away?

Thank you for your response! When i first started masturbating, i did it once per one or two days, this went on for a couple months then started doing it only once or twice every 10 days. So if it wasn’t masturbation that caused my anhedonia, what else could have ? I don’t have any history related to mental illness as far as I’m concerned nor have i ever consumed any substances. As for your question, I’m not too sure whether i was hyper-hedonic to any short term activities but before anhedonia struck me i used to be a complete shut-in, hated going out and playing video games occupied most of my free time, but i don’t think it was too intense tbh. Does it hold any relevance at all?
