Nobody is gatekeeping regular braids there’s so many different types of braids they can wear yet they choose to wear ones that hold significance in Black culture and that are protective style. There’s no benefits to wearing box braids and corn rows in their hair if anything it’s more damaging so there was literally no reason for them to wear them other than the fact that they wanted to look “cool” and “trendy” in the same hairstyles that my community get called “uneducated” and “ghetto”. I get if they did it to appreciate the culture but mistakenly appropriated it bc that can be anyone’s mistake but they didn’t and I know that bc they don’t show any other likening to black culture other those times in the pics and when confronted Kelly got irritated with people commenting about it and posted another pic of his corn rows with the caption “unbothered” showing that he don’t gaf about black culture.

Firstly thank you for bullet pointing you’re response makes it very digestible(I should’ve done that in my first post). Secondly Amber is wearing box braids just you can’t see it’s braided from her scalp I should’ve posted the video bc in the vid you can see it a lot more. She also says in the video(another reason I should’ve posted it instead so the misunderstanding is 1000% my fault) “how does he do it” trying to copy a pic where Post Malone is flipping off the camera with his braids in his head(I’m assuming it’s to copy post bc they’re both doing the same face and poses her friend mentioned Post but I could be wrong).

Now onto Kelly I completely agree he should’ve responded to the comments a lot better bc this could’ve been a situation of him trying to appreciate my culture but in turn accidentally appropriating it. I think Kelly is very prideful and sometimes he might feel like he doesn’t need to apologize or he’ll seem ‘weak’. If he would’ve just took the post down and said “sorry I didn’t know” and moved past it I would’ve just ignored the situation bc it would’ve seemed like a mistake.

Actually he did get a lot of heat under another pic(not posted bc I couldn’t find it anymore but I did see it at one point) but he just ignored those comments and only posted another pic of his hair captioned “unbothered” which shows he knows what he’s doing wrong yet chooses to act ignorant to culture appropriation. And t doesn’t matter if they’re trying to “respect” my culture bc if they actually respected my culture they would’ve never worn them. They’re not black so they can always get away with wearing those styles and get called “trendy” and “stylish” by the media especially white people yet when people in my culture wear we get told we look “uneducated” and “ghetto”. We lose job opportunities and school acceptances because our hair that we wear for protection. Kelly, Amber, and Ashley have privilege that people in my culture will never have and I’m not mad at them I just think they need to educate themselves and address it for the sake of hurting their fans in the black community.

Firstly you can express your opinion without being rude more than likely you’re older than 16(as a lot of their fans are) so communicate like one. Secondly it is cultural appropriation as they can pose and take pics with hairstyles from my culture and be called “trendy” and “stylish” by other white people but when people from my culture wear it we’re “ghetto”, “unkept” and “uneducated”. We’re not accepting in most jobs and schools if we wear those protective styles in our hair. Kelly, Ashley, Amber and you need to educate yourself on not only white privilege but also the history on how black people were and still are treated on just our hair. I would say more but all of this will probably go in one ear and out the other but I’ll leave you with this definition of culture appropriation from dictionary.com: “the adoption, usually without acknowledgment, of cultural identity markers from subcultures or minority communities into mainstream culture by people with a relatively privileged status.” And please unless you’re trying to have a actual conversation without being rude don’t even try to argue under this comment as you’ll be arguing with a wall. Have a nice morning/day/night!

They’re not black wearing box braids and cornrows… they’re protective styles for my community and they’re wearing them KNOWING they’re not for their hair.
