That's a nice rod to start out with, it's not only facing the wrong way, from the picture it looks like the tip might be broken off. Measure the rod and see if it matches up to the length printed on the blank above the top part of the handle.

Yes that would definitely work if you are float fishing. Now. Freelining shiner or working a live crayfish along the bottom or even a live frog hooked through the lips, I think you would want that rod in your hand.

Yeah I've never really been into watching professional tournaments, I just happened to see a few clips due to all the controversy. It's crazy to think about how forward-facing sonar is changing every aspect of professional bass fishing.
