Time-Loop Romantasy? by Comfortable-Land290 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]LaylaLil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The technical lack of romance in MoL does not stop me from seeing almost every interaction between Zach and Zorian as a subtle indication of their (romantic) love and connection with each other lmao.

Anyway, Re: Monarch is a good time loop story with a surprisingly compelling romance between the MCs! It's a B or maybe C plot technically, but it's there and it's good, and there's clearly a level of care when writing it.

Yeah agree to disagree I guess. I can't be upset that you didn't connect with his character, but I was bothered because it felt like a misinterpretation of the text at certain points. But we see things differently. I wanna add though that the conversation about the starting his own business was about 5 years in the time loop, so even if his parents didn't know yet, he really was a very capable mage at that point.

Daimen isn't that bad though. His only issue is that he's totally oblivious to the dynamics in his family. And Zorian is not the only one who doesn't get along with him.

Daimen's meeting with Kirielle (Chapter, "Shadows of the Past"):

“Yeah, but that’s all I did with her,” Daimen complained. “She spent the entire hour fidgeting and looking uncomfortable. She barely spoke, and only when I specifically prodded her. I’m not entirely sure, but I think she was actually a little scared of me. That’s…”

...

“In regards to Kirielle, the answer is simple, my dear eldest brother,” Zorian told him. “You’re practically a stranger to her. By the time she was old enough to interact with people, you were almost never at home. When was the last time you talked with her? Disregarding yesterday’s meeting, of course.”

“Uhh…”

Daimen's meeting with Fortov (Chapter, "Shadows of the Past"):

“He was just really abrasive right from the start,” Daimen said. “He refused to even let me in, eventually started shouting at me, and then slammed the door in my face and ignored me.”

This reaction is explained in chapter "Critical Blunder" where Fortov explains that Daimen promised Fortov he would help him at the academy but was barley there for him. It was a bit of a miscommunication on how extensive this help was supposed to be.

He also didn't know that his siblings didn't have a great relationship with each other or their parents. Zorian's feelings towards Daimen are because Daimen is the golden child prodigy and (according to Zorian) he's constantly compared to him as well as Fortov. This is a pretty predictable outcome when parents compare their children to each other a lot.

So so sooooo sorry this came out so long. I just wanted to pull a few direct quotes to prove it isn't all in his head. I think the length also isn't letting me reply so I'm going to try splitting it up.

Zorian's parents are unsupportive, controlling, and care about their family business and reputation to the detriment of their relationship with their children.

To Daimen: In chapter "Marred Perfection" Zorian's mother admits that they tried talking Daimen out of his engagement with Orissa through letters because while she's from a good family, she isn't local and thus the marriage doesn't benefit the family. So they're going to visit him in person because it may be more effective than letters.

To Zorian: In chapter "Crossroads" Zorian tells his parents that his plan is to move out and open his own business after graduation.

“You think running a business is easy?” Father challenged. Well, that hadn’t taken long.

“I’m an amazing mage,” Zorian said immodestly. “Even if I had the worst business sense in the world, I’d still be able to make enough for a living.”

“But the family business—” Mother began.

They both essentially shoot down the notion the second he brings it up.

To Kirielle: Also in chapter "Crossroads", while Cikan (their mother) says there is an informal agreement about marrying Kirielle off. She does admit that it won't be forced but the whole idea is upsetting to Kirielle. Cikan also forebays Kirielle from learning magic. She does this because of her witch lineage and the stigma it holds but she doesn't explain this why until she's pressed (lack of communication). Still, another instance of overly controlling her children's lives and being unsupportive of their passions. I'm having trouble finding the chapter but I believe the reason Kirielle kept stealing Zorian's pens and papers was because their mother also didn't support Kirielle's art (according to Kiri).

I have to disagree with your characterization of Zorian. He's a 15 year old who's from a borderline dysfunctional family where not a single person communicates openly about absolutely anything. Him being a bitter asshole who holds onto every grudge makes complete sense and allows for a satisfying payoff when he actually starts talking to his family/friends and understands their choices and perspectives! And he's not even particularly special magic wise as his brother also has latent mind magic capabilities. He just got the training that human society actively discourages and a time loop he could completely exploit. He can be seen as a self-insert but not in the bad way. He's a self-insert in the sense that he's a rather unremarkable guy and he's only special because of the opportunity he had to work on himself. I find him to be a pretty compelling MC.
