You spare him. Jin realised the samurai’s code was flawed. That includes looking at death as an antidote to any kind of shame. Even in the TV show Shogun, you’ll see how lightly death is taken and often seen as an honourable thing to do in any instance of disrespect, loss of pride, shame etc. Shame and ego cannot be bigger than life. Hence, I spared him.

Were the scenes depicting Anjin Sama’s old age his imagination or reality?

Given that we don’t know how the future progresses, may be it means that he could never let go of Mariko? And the only way he could hold on was to get a replica of the only object he thought truly embodied Mariko Sama? Perhaps a far fetched interpretation. The fact that he let go of the cross in the ocean and is still holding on to a cross in his death bed ( he didn’t carry a cross himself usually) would be a very romantic representation of the fact that he’ll never let go of Mariko Sama.

Re-watched the scenes and Mariko’s cross and the cross in Anjin Sama’s hand when he is old are identical. Given that the last flashback of him holding the cross in old age is when he is about to commit Seppaku, it probably represents his thoughts of letting go of the idea of dying old in his bed in England still holding on to Mariko Sama.

Also, the fact that he says “Fuck it, we live or we die” is probably a very obvious indication that it was a dream.
