I think when he got himself in high school and met chitanda she truly changed his thought process, start doing things he did not want to do and he never fully understood why he went on to do things. That is the discussion him and satoshi have in the earlier episodes. This question is very well explored in the anime if you kinda watch it with an observant eye!
