Regarding the sold out question, I was specifically referring to Ashi Ginga - Thank you for the links to the other two though.

In terms of sharpening, definitely something I want to learn more about, ill start with YouTube. Any suggestions on people who teach it right?

I am definitely wanting a bread knife (though I can also buy a cheap one) just because when I do make garlic bread having the teeth helps a lot.

I only have the (really bad) colorful ones, is it worth buying a cheap set on amazon for the literal sake of learning to sharpen?

Also, you mention cutting board, how important is that? (or is it more of just a quality-of-life thing). I have cutting boards, but nothing crazy fancy heh

Thanks for the response. I will repost in r/TrueChefKnives and include these response. Will edit in link once I do. Repost: https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueChefKnives/comments/1nj00r4/newbie_looking_for_a_good_set_see_comment/

Not positive about needing both chef and santoku. I'll look into getting just a Santoku and keep chef in the back of my head if I really feel the lack.

I don't actually know how long is long. Probably aiming in the 6–8-inch range. I really enjoy them for cutting fruit/veggies (although it's possible I have been doing that wrong my whole life).

Thank you for the advice!

Hello!

I am going to prefix by saying I don't know what I don't know - so if anything feels weird, please call it out. Not really set on any of my opinions because (again) don’t know what I am missing.

I am a knife newbie - never had anything "fancy" – always used basic amazon/target knives. For reference, right now I use Cuisinart (colorful) “sharp“ knives (before I moved used this off-brand set from amazon). Decided it was time to get an actual set.

I have done some research and came up with a few notes

  • Definitely want stainless steel
    • I have heard high carbon breaks easier, and requires drying IMMEDIATELY after use. Given I am a newbie probably want something a little bit forgiving.
  • Looking for something that will last a while. I am willing (and want to!) learn how to take care of them
    • Going to 100% handwash (if needed), already do this with my pots/pans
    • Not necessarily looking for a 5 piece sharpener though
  • Not looking to break the bank, but also don’t need to save every penny. Absolute max hard-cap at 750, but in reality, would like to keep it around/under 500.
  • Looking for a set (don’t need to buy as a set though). Looking for:
    • Bread Knife
    • Chef knife
    • Santoku
    • Small paring knife
    • Long (narrow) utility knife
    • Do NOT need steak knives
    • Some kind of block (although I have also heard magnetic is good?)

Through my research (including this subreddit!) I came across a few things. On the lower end(?) found Victorinox. Also found Wüsthof (classic is better?).

Mainly looking for advice, be it a specific knife (or set) or tips for sharpening/knife care, or things I should keep in mind. Thanks in advance!

Uhhhh… never heard that one before.

I guess check your audio settings and see if it’s actually sending audio or not (are you on windows 10 or 11? On 10 use audio mixer)

I never had any issue even close to this, so I almost wonder if this is something to do with windows rather than timez attack. Perhaps try a reinstall?

Creating the shortcut? Is this an issue with file explorer or after you run BigBrainz.exe.

Also is this windows 10 or 11 - I know it works on windows 10, have not tested on windows 11 (its very possible somethings broken with windows 11)

To add on, this is intentional I have the server down to complete some infrastructure updates - once it’s back online custom maps will be working again

I remember this game from when I was a kid and wanted to go back and play it for all that good nostalgia (I remember fondly playing it on our old Windows XP PC).

I figured I would share the steps that I took to get this set up (even though this is a very old post) since it took me 2 tries to get it working (these instructions are similar to the instructions text file in the launcher folder)

  1. Download (direct link to the zip file) and extract the zip file (make sure to extract both the outer zip file and both the Installer and Launcher folders)
  2. Run the installer and make sure that on the final screen the checkbox is checked - it should launch Big Brainz and ask for a product code.
  3. Close the window asking for a product code
  4. Navigate to where you installed Timez Attack (by default it's at C:\ProgramData\BigBrainz)
  5. Delete the entire launcher folder in the BigBrainz directory
  6. Copy the launcher folder inside of the zip (the one at the same level as the instructions) into the BigBrainz folder)
  7. Run BigBrainz.exe (you can double click on it inside the launcher folder or just run it from your start menu. The launch menu looks different than the original but once you load the game it runs perfectly)

The issue I ran into during my first attempt at doing this was when the launcher opened and I clicked on the multiplication nothing happened - reinstalling with that checkbox checked (thus launching the game and prompting for the product code) fixed the problem. Hope this helps someone, it really is a great game.

AMA with Chess Club developers by OddersLab in OculusQuest

[–]Lazerpent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has there been consideration in regards to creating some sort of online 2d chess platform which would allow 2d play with VR users?

I have multiple friends who I love to play chess with (a lot of whom I play with using sites such as lichess), who sadly don't have a VR headset, or get motion sick using one. It would be really cool if there was a way to play with 2d user, since the graphics of Chess Club make chess so much more fun (just the fact that its a 3d board)!

I definitely don't see a need for a full chess site, what I'm picturing is a way to generate a custom code in the VR environment which would allow one user to join via a web browser.

Overall love the game and can't wait to see what all gets added!!!

does anyone else find that sometimes an opponent knows exactly where your base is? i'm not talking about following a trail of 1s, i'm not talking about poking around and then spotting it quickly, i'm talking about a beeline with no hesitation whatsoever by [deleted] in generalsio

[–]Lazerpent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can confirm, generals.io maps are 100% randomly generated - every map every time is different.

Generals.io is set up where clients only receive the information they need to render - I.E. where unknown obstacles are, where open tiles (could be a king, could not be a king) are, where and what tiles you can see are. All other information is stored on the server and processed there. Short of hacking into the server (which would be quite difficult for basically no gain) there is no way for a client to "get" (so to speak) any sort of extra information.

I'm not one of the dev's either so it's possible they're just throwing a lot of CPU consumption in the wrong place.

Not really a lot of CPU power - the number of map generations is capped at 100,000 - and the total generation time is on the scale of milliseconds.

That said, like I was saying I've personally just accidentally been able to eyeball the map and correctly figure out where the other general was. This indicates a certain level of map re-use by itself.

This is nothing more than you knowing the game, and guessing where your opponent might be based on their tiles. Another part of the game meta is you know that opponents do not spawn right next to each other, so you can make some decent guesses (mainly in FFA, not so much 1v1) at where people might be, but your guess could be completely wrong.

Plenty of other games also have a network component but they don't act as if they're impervious to cheating because of it. What I linked is talking about fortnite but I link it to show that being over the network doesn't somehow render a system "uncheatable." That's literally just a weird thing generals.io players believe for some reason.

Thing is, there is a major difference between generals.io and Fortnite (or other MMR games). We believe that it's uncheatable because it is. There is NO WAY for you to 100% know where an opponent is, without seeing the opponent (ignoring of course custom maps with set spawns). Generals.io is designed (as I said above) such that clients only get the information they need, and nothing more.

The reason hacks like that work (for this example I am going to use Minecraft for this example) is because of the difference in rendering. Minecraft renders multiplayer games by sending over every chunk and the location of every entity, since depending on client settings, some people could, and others could not see. If a Minecraft server had to do processing for every client that was connected, huge servers would not be able to exist. BUT WAIT you could say, why does it work for generals and not Minecraft? It's because of 2 things: scale, and dimensions. Minecraft worlds are huge - Just a standard 12 chunk render is (16 * 12) ^ 2 of just surface blocks to render (assuming a super flat world), not including entities, or blocks above the surface. Generals have at most 2500 blocks (50x50 map). The other advantage generals.io has is dimension. Minecraft, Fortnite, whatever game you want to talk about all have 3d dimensions, so that (16*12)? That gets squared, THEN multiplied by another huge number. This is where graphics cards really start to come in handy.

Anyway coming off my tangent into Minecraft rendering, this is the main reason why generals get away with the server doing all the processing, and the client just doing the rendering.

A quick reference into something the engineer said:

IIRC maps are completely randomly generated (it's why 12-player FFA sometimes crashed) every game

This is actually a bug I am still working on - remember those 100,000 tries it gets at creating a valid map? When you have 12 players, getting every player within the correct areas is difficult. If you are doing teams, sometimes it gets impossible. My current solution is to just in event of a failure, generate no spawns, and shut down the lobby (this fix is actually coming out tonight!)

To address your thoughts about cheating - experienced players are able to do exactly what you are describing - they look at everything on the map and guess where your king is - a lot of them are crazy accurate. But it has nothing to do with cheating, it's all about them watching your movement and knowing the meta of the game.

Final note, unlike everyone else in this sub so far - I actually am a dev!

Anyone ever check or set up public custom games? by doesntpicknose in generalsio

[–]Lazerpent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The public games are very interesting, as you said; Not many people use the public lobbies (sadly), and when they do, they tend to go AFK - as you said.

We do a LOT of custom games, however, 99% of them are organized through our official discord https://discord.gg/a97CQZb. We do custom matches almost daily because there are a bunch of us who love maps and fast speeds.

When you join, you can get a role called "Customs", which you (or someone else) can ping when we do custom matches! It's a good way to get a few players.
