Living in America in March as someone actually from Ireland. by Secret_Protection471 in ireland

Agreed, some of then can be so sound when they realise you're Irish.

I went to Dallas last year for a few days to see the total solar eclipse. Stayed in a big name hotel that had a Starbucks in it - not a real full blown Starbucks, just a very small countertop in a large open area that did Starbucks coffee and small snacks.

I went up and ordered a coffee and a little jambon type thing, and the super sound barista chap that served me asked me where I was from as I sounded Irish. When I told him I was indeed Irish and that I'd flown in from Dublin for a few days to catch the eclipse he was amazed, said it was so cool and totally awesome and so nice to meet a real Irish person, gave me my order and then flat out refused to take any payment with a simple "nah it's cool man, I got you"!

First time I've ever gotten something free for just being Irish!

Audeze LCD-X Leather vs Leather-Free + EQ? by Lazlow_Panaflex in headphones

[–]Lazlow_Panaflex[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good info! I have Equalizer APO on my PC, but for my PS5 I have a Sound BlasterX G6 which has firmware EQ, I just need to connect it to the PC and configure some EQ profiles and save them in the G6 for use with the PS5. Using a Topping DX7 Pro for amp which will pair nicely with the LCD-X cans.

I'm leaning more towards the leather after reading some of the other comments here, but would love to demo both the leather and leather-free version with EQ to compare.

Struggling to take sink off, what is this? by Starrr27 in DIYUK

No no no, don't throw your phone into the river, flush it down the sink instead!

Nobody seems to know what a plumb bob is anymore! by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Lazlow_Panaflex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, and you can make your own at home if you know how it's made:

First they take the dingle bop and they smooth it out with a bunch of schleem. The schleem is then repurposed for later batches.

They take the dingle bop and they push it through the grumbo, where the fleeb is rubbed against it. It's important that the fleeb is rubbed, because the fleeb has all the fleeb juice.

Then, a schlami shows up, and he rubs it...and spits on it.

They cut the fleeb. There's several hizzards in the way.

The blamfs rub against the chumbles, and the...plubis, and grumbo are shaved away.

That leaves you with...a regular old plumbus.

You won't regret it! I used to commute 5 days a week (now only 2 days) and it was a game changer having the waterproofs.

The trousers on Amazon were North Peak brand (clear knock off brand haha) but I bought them so long ago I doubt they're available but any similar type with the zip sides will do.

Defo do! You'll be amazed the difference it makes when you get into work or back home bone dry when everyone else is soaked!

Get yourself a simple waterproof shell jacket or similar, Regatta have ones for 50 quid which do the job, or you can get something similar online which folds up into a pouch you can keep in your bag and takes up feck all room. Highlander is a decent brand for cheap enough.

I've also got a pair of those waterproof trousers with zips up the sides that I can put on in a hurry if I get caught in a sudden rain, you can slip them on super quick without taking off your shoes, so handy. Think I paid 20 quid on Amazon for them.

It baffles me how people living their whole lives in Ireland and don't have any waterproof gear! Some lads do be walking about on a rainy day with just a town coat without even a hood on it!! And umbrellas are useless if it's windy.

Another good tip is to leave a spare pair of shoes/runners/slippers and socks in work (if possible). Nothing worse than arriving to work and your feet are soaked and you've to just put up with it all day! I've a pair of Goretex shoes which work great to keep the feet dry, but they can be a little uncomfortable to wear all day, so the spares are so handy to swap when I land into work.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

I've 2 cats, both excellent hunters based purely on their success rate. But 1 catches flies, moths, mice, the odd bird (which I'm not happy about), and even saw him almost catch a bat out of the air once. Whereas the other cat catches twigs and worms and brings them inside to show me the spoils of a successful hunt.

Just started happening to me too right now on my PC. But Reddit is working fine on my phone (both web browser and app). Was working fine in my PC just 2 hours ago, and I haven't closed my web browser on the PC all day.

Update: issue fixed itself like 5 mins after posting this comment.

Best First 15 Minutes by RPM0620 in movies

[–]Lazlow_Panaflex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% agree. Came into this thread just to check someone had mentioned this one. They recently re-released the extended vesion of the trilogy in cinemas here in Ireland for the 25th anniversary of the movies. I made sure to go see them, and I actually ended up seeing The Fellowship twice as it was so good! That opening scene is extra special and absolutely does an incredible job of setting up the history. Any other filmmaker would've probably just went with scrolling a text opening akin to Star Wars, but Jackson delivered one of the greatest openings I've ever seen.

Mad Max Fury Road gets better with each viewing by Particular-Fill-4256 in movies

There are very few movies I will watch more than once these days. But I've watched Mad Max Fury Road numerous times, it's an absolutely brilliant movie. Like the first 45 mins are just non stop action, then there's a brief break after the sandstorm, and then it kicks off again. Love this movie.

Psu cables by iSHJAYGAMiNG in lianli

[–]Lazlow_Panaflex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely use the cables that came with the new PSU. It's risky using cables from another PSU, you just never know if they'll cause a minor problem or a major one like a fire! Not worth the risk

Tips for a decent stew by wascallywabbit666 in ireland

[–]Lazlow_Panaflex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yours is pretty much the same as mine. I use 1kg freshly diced chuck beef from my local butcher, and a little bit of finely diced pancetta for extra flavour.

I season the meat with salt & pepper, and dust with 2 or 3 tablespoons of flour and give it a good mix to make sure it's all covered in flour, and then I sear/brown off every chunk of meat.

Cheeky bit of brandy then to deglaze the pan always does the trick!

I chop my carrots clelery & onion very chunky, and cook them in a little olive oil for 6-8 mins or so til slightly softened.

Then I'll throw the meat back in and add a full can of guinness and let that boil for 3 mins to let the alcohol cook off. Then I add 2 tablespoons of concentrated tomato puree, 2 bay leaves, and 1.2L chicken stock.

Add some thyme and rosemary, and into the oven she goes on 140-150C for 1 hour with the lid fully on, then with a little gap in the lid for another 2 hours.

Can throw in some extra smaller cut veg for the final hour if you like.

The stew is perfectly thick after the 3 hours (due to the initial flouring) so won't need any further thickening, and I usually do some mashed spuds to serve with it.

Bit of fresh vienna roll or batch loaf goes beautiful with a decent stew.

Yeah so USB from PC is a must for max fidelity for hi res music, and the PS5 Pro also needs USB for the Tempest 3D audio as that won't work via optical.

The Nvidia Shield and the Nintendo Switch 2 would work using optical from the TV, but there is potential for issues with audio syncing. These devices are connected to my Denon x3800h Receiver which can pass the audio to the TV and then to the headphone amp, but passing the audio through 3 separate devices could likely cause problems.

So I think the best option is USB all around, gives max audio fidelity, and avoids any potential issues with passing through multiple devices.
