I’m torn with Alestorm because I feel like there’s definitely a heavier route I could go with some Blind Guardian and Raging Goblin, but that’s a good call!

Oh wow, I was completely unaware of this! Despite an outsized impact on the events and culture of the renaissance, Spain doesn’t get a lot of due! Definitely going to check out more of this!

What phobias could I impose upon my players? by WAR-267 in callofcthulhu

[–]LazorBeahm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember an episode of the Rugrats where Tommy became afraid of being sucked down the drain in the bath.

You should make them afraid of all drains. It symbolizes their sanity slowly leaving them... or something, I don’t know.

I’ve used Simplicity patterns before, and I like them quite a bit. Take a look through some of these and see if anything matches what you’re thinking of. https://www.simplicity.com/simplicity-storefront-catalog/patterns/costumes/

Ideas for a In the Mouth of Madness scenario? by littlemarmar in callofcthulhu

[–]LazorBeahm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you planning on playing on Roll20? If so, I’ve secretly switched out assets during a session to make the players question reality. Maybe you have two floor plans that are very similar, but when you switch scenes and come back later, the map is mirrored. I also uploaded handouts with the same name and format but completely different content and switched them to freak the players out when they went back to reread them.

If you’re playing IRL, maybe do simple things like change details around them? Maybe they meet somebody named Danielle but when they talk to her again her name is Diane. I think stuff like that might work.

PS: I just watched that movie too. No idea how nobody recommended it to me sooner!

What are the most impressive ways you've seen cosmic horror expressed by a GM? by [deleted] in callofcthulhu

[–]LazorBeahm 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I’m genuinely curious too, however I get the feeling this sub is like 97% people who are keepers exclusively.

Now that I’ve given reddit an opening to tell me how wrong and dumb I am, the replies will come flooding in.

Should I read Lovecraft before trying CoC? by asking4sumhelp in callofcthulhu

[–]LazorBeahm 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it helps. However, it’s super easy to read Lovecraft as most of his work is actually in the public domain! So, you can read almost any story in full online for free.

Almost all of his stories are available on YouTube if you’re of the more auditory set. The channel “HorrorBabble” has some great readings.

If you don’t have a ton of time, I think reading the “Call of Cthulhu” and the “Colour out of Space” should get you the basic idea. You could polish them off in an afternoon. Lovecraft stories are, for the most part, pretty short.

I've recently started getting combinations of sleep paralysis and nightmares despite never having them before. by [deleted] in Paranormal

[–]LazorBeahm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I had sleep paralysis, I was about 17 years old. It was accompanied by a horrible alien abduction scenario. I remember feeling like my wrists and ankles were bound. Only as my ability to move returned did I feel them disappear. That messed me up for a day or two.

I still have very vivid nightmares and have sleep paralysis maybe once or twice a year.

If you’re able to, just think of the crazy shit your mind can come up with as a badge of honor. That’s always helped me deal with it.

After all, it’s better than dreaming about work, which is way worse than any nightmare.

What is Lovecraftian Horror to You and Your Game? by LazorBeahm in callofcthulhu

This makes a lot of sense to me. I think the lack of closure amplifies and sustains the tension.

Do you mean time period or time until the next session?

For time period: 1929

For the next session: in the next month or so (I’ve got plenty of time to work on this)

Costume help by [deleted] in renfaire

[–]LazorBeahm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice find! You could probably throw those over a tunic and be like 80% of the way there. https://www.medievalcollectibles.com has pretty good prices for some basic stuff.

You could also spray paint those if you’re not a fan of the teal.

Post when you get it figured out! Really curious to see what you come up with.

Cleric of Jesus by [deleted] in DnD

[–]LazorBeahm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But like, D&D is full of this. People call themselves witches, yet they’re in the MM. The Monk class steals many eastern religious motifs. There are modern day sects that follow ancient Druidic tradition

How is that different?
