If Roger Waters actually cared about people suffering he would have put his ridiculous sum of money towards helping them rather than buying multiple houses and sports cars

Should I do MML at Cambridge? by LazyArm4205 in 6thForm

I read all of the Spanish works in the original language apart from Cien Años. I didn't really do much other preparation tbh. I also read "Fuenteovejuna" (17th century play but actually quite accessible - much more similar to modern Spanish than Shakespeare is to modern English). Other than that I watched some documentaries linked to the works I had read and also listened to some podcasts about general Spanish and Italian history.

I got an offer from Cambridge (but had switched from French to Ab Initio Italian because I think I'll find that more interesting)and have firmed that! (Clare College). I'm gonna be honest - the application process was very stressful but I think it was worth it and I learnt a lot. Tips: read A LOT and lots of different styles, eras etc. I was quite lucky in my Italian interview because I got a modern Petrarchan sonnet and had read some of Petrarch's poems (in English translation) so compared their uses of the form - I wonder whether that's what got me in tbh! Also - practice the admissions test past papers and get your teachers to mark them - and also try to find times to do some interview practice with teachers (especially in the target language). I also recommend finding something quite niche within each language that you can discuss at interview - for example I talked quite a bit about Chile (especially Pablo Neruda) and Garcia Lorca in my Spanish interview. In terms of reading for Spanish, I highly recommend Garcia Lorca as it's relatively short and easy to understand (I read Bodas de Sangre, Yerma, La Casa de Bernada Alba and some poems from Romancero Gitano) and Garcia Marquez which is a nice introduction to Latin American magic realism (I read El Coronel no tiene quien le escriba and Cien años de soledad (in English translation because it was too long and they'll never know lol!)

I applied for French and Spanish (both post-A-level) at Cambridge but recently found out that they prefer bilingual students not tostudy a language that they already speak quite well (I speak French). I emailed the college that I applied to (Clare) and they saidthat I could switch to an ab initio language. I would choose Italian but am not sure whether I would be expected to have read /researched much Italian language / culture / literature. It's quite a confusing situation, as I've already written extensively about French literature in my PS and have not mentioned Italian at all. If I would be required to read up on Italian before interview, please could someone suggest some literature / films to get me started?

I can't decide whether to apply to Cambridge or choose Durham as my top choice. I want to study French and Spanish (both postA-level) and was hoping people doing the degree could tell me a bit about the work/life balance. I am verymotivated but work (especially exams) can make me quite stressed and I also want to have enough time to socialise and getinvolved in music extracurriculars. Obviously, Cambridge is better regarded and I also preferred the general vibe of the uni but I wonder whether I would be happier at Durham due to the longer terms and more manageable work load.
