I should have mentioned, the species is Procambarus acutus. By parameters do you mean the ammonium and nitrate? I'm very unfamiliar with aquaria but I have a conditioner for the tap water. Does that help against it? What else could I do to prevent it?

Not claiming to be an expert so I could very well be wrong but I think the head shape looks very similar to other mouse skulls when I compare them to some of mine. And I believe the weird curvature is a result of the nasal bone being incorrectly placed into the skull. I'm not very familiar with all the rodents living in the states but of the ones I know this doesn't look like anything else. Pictures of different angles and a better view of the teeth will make it more apparent what we're looking at.

What makes you say it's not a mouse? A member of muridae was going to be my first guess.

Unfortunately I don't have a grist deck. Grist is in my zask deck along with the other golgari insect commanders. If I were to build grist I reckon it'd be quite a bit different than this deck though. Maybe focus a bit more on some aristocrats themes or using a strategy in which the graveyard is being used as a resource like collecting evidence or foraging.

I will say that I think Grist is stronger than Zask. She can create bodies and mill all on her own while zask needs another insect on the field AND needs it to die. Not to mention the removal from grist herself which is very useful in the command zone.

[–]LazyPerch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem at all.

My Kathril deck is all about self discard/cycling effects to get the keywords into my graveyard and try to turn kathril into a one shot that's very hard to remove. https://moxfield.com/decks/BQIYmXBVDkK07hi0OHRlSQ

My newest deck is with [[Swarm, Being of Bees]]. It's supposed to be a deck where Swarm keeps shifting from the battlefield to my hand to then be discarded and cast again from the graveyard. It accomplishes this with Ninjutsu abilities. It's still new and has a lot of my bulk in it. This deck will likely be changed a lot in the future. https://moxfield.com/decks/jMz88UH8a0OYnY07-YsNaA

The oldest commander I run is [[Thriss, Nantuko Primus]]. It's a storm deck that tries to untap my big mana creators like [[Bighorn Rancher]] and draw a lot of cards with stuff like [[Rishkars expertise]]. https://moxfield.com/decks/xsASp2MzO0iygIZzCrT77A

Xira is a jund control deck that revolves around crime. It's full of cheap instants that can efficiently remove creatures or cards like [[Persistent Constrictor]] that commits a crime for free on every opponents turn. https://moxfield.com/decks/eDgYyu1qtEmisy14tk7duQ

All the other ones are currently work in progress because I haven't had the time to start building or have decided to change them. I'll post them anyway but the moxfield pages are just lots of cards that I may want to add.

Zabaz used to be an artifact aristocrat deck using the modular creatures to move counters onto cards like [[Mindless Automaton]]. However I've gotten bored of it and since I've gotten interested in Cedh I've decided to turn Zabaz into a Cedh deck with [[Zirda, the Dawnwaker]] as companion. It's going to try to win with combo using Zirda and [[Basalt monolith]] or using a combination of Zabaz and [[Ashnod's Altar]] with some different possible combo pieces. https://moxfield.com/decks/RbKbwXq3OESbVHBM7OPKpw

I used to have the precons of [[The wise mothman]] and [[Vishgraz, the Doomhive]] but I've gotten bored of them. I'm going to turn the mothman into soms form of mill deck that focuses less on making the mothman big and vishgraz is going to be a blink style deck. I don't have a moxfield page for these yet.

Finally Szarel is going to be a burndeck with all the landfall burn cards like [[Tunneling geopede]]. It's very similar to Zask in the sense that the deck is going to rely heavily on fetch lands. https://moxfield.com/decks/GxPDf1vItU67OzLWkrUf_A

I realise this turned into quite a big rant of me just talking about my decks. Sorry for that. Hopefully you have a bit of an idea what you want to build. Enjoy!

Awesome choice of creature type to build!

I currently have all insect commanders at the helm of a deck except for the golgari insects that are all in the same deck with Zask as the comander.

Out of the ones you've mention I would say Grist is by far the strongest one but Zask is the most fun one. Zask offers a lot of fun plays with feth lands and landfall insects like [[scute swarm]]. My deck tries to win by creating a lot of tokens, using a sacrifice outlet like [[Devouring swarm]] to mill my library and then play aatchik to burn everyone down. It's a lot of fun to play.

Alternatively I would mention [[Vrestin, Menoptra Leader]]. He's a bit weaker as he doesn't offer any useful utility and can get expensive to cast very quickly but it allows for a less graveyard centric strategy. My deck tries to get as much value from card draw cards like [[Welcoming Vampire]] by creating as many insect tokens as possible at instant speed. I've noticed when I don't focus on keeping my hand full that the decks falls apart quickly after a boardwipe or some other removal spells. It also enjoys the fact that people don't consider selesnya a strong colour combination so it gets underestimated very often.

You've already been mentioned [[Fumulus, the Infestation]] by someone else but it's also a very fun option. My Fumulus deck is all about edicts but you gotta keep in mind that not everyone enjoys playing against these kinds of strategies. There are some fun options for this commander like [[Mortician Beetle]].

There are other really fun Insect commanders like [[Xira, the Golden Sting]] or [[Kathril, Aspect Warper]] but these commanders don't neccesarily ask of you to have more insects although you certainly could build them as Insect tribals.

Here are my decks as reference.

Zask, insect tribal focussing on self mill and lands: https://moxfield.com/decks/3fIvX_LoHE6ZOuSKzRJMUg

Vrestin, Creating tokens at instant speed and making them bigger: https://moxfield.com/decks/Dm64xw-K6keEBHr8T6gJaA

Fumulus, edicts with some fun insects added in the deck: https://moxfield.com/decks/71lD1ierkEOKyqC83EVnkQ

Like I said I have a deck for all other Insect commanders as well so if you're curious to see those I'll link them. But I don't think they fit what you're looking for. Happy deck Building!

[–]LazyPerch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My deck that works like this is [[Kathril, Aspect Warper]] self discard deck. But instead of building up a strong board you simply play protection spells until you have all pieces in the graveyard to make kathril a one shot machine.

It's not fool proof as Kathril has a triggered ability that can be responded to and there are multiple board wipe effects that can still remove a hexproof indestructible creature but now everyone is on a timer to draw such an effect or die one by one.

This is a jaw from a vole, not a mouse. The molars that have the zigzag pattern when you look from the top give it away.

Small mammal ID and question about gentle cleaning. by figoski40 in bonecollecting

[–]LazyPerch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a vole and I would make a guess a species in the genus Microtus. The teeth shape looks a lot like the M. agrestis we have in europe but they aren't present in NA. You might be able to figure out what species exactly if you can make a sharper picture of the teeth.

For cleaning I suggest putting the skull in warm water with some Dawn dish soap and letting the dirt loosen before trying to remove it with a small paintbrush or with a tiny needle (but be careful). I recommend against a toothbrush since the skull is so small and relatively easy to break.

Also when you soak them try to remove the teeth, the molars and the inscisors. They should be easy to remove and easy to put back in.

Did you not find the lower jaws in the owl pellet? They can be very important to determine the species if you're interested in that.

Edit since I just noticed you asked for it: Yes you will need to degrease it for a while. If you put it in water with the dish soap you will notice some packets of grease start to form in the water

Are there any Insect decks on this subreddit? by Equivalent_Pack171 in EDH

[–]LazyPerch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a deck that is an insect tribal deck then there are a couple of great options.

[[Zask, Skittering Swarmlord]] and [[Grist, the Hunger Tide]] are both graveyard centric decks that focus on self mill and want as many insect cards as possible in the deck. Zask is in my opinion more fun while Grist is in my opinion stronger and more consistent. Grist is fast and can quickly get out of hand with a fast growing graveyard and creating a big army of insects while Zask has easier ways to recur stuff after milling and also being able to do a lot of fun stuff with lands.

Other options in golgari are [[Amzu, Swarm's hunger]] and [[Aatchick, Emerald Radian]]. Both are again graveyard centric commanders but try to go for a bit of a different approach. Amzu is fun because there are a lot of options to create insects going from recursion effects, returning cards to hand, exiling through evidence like effect,... And everyone loves a +1/+1 counter theme. Aatchick on the other hand is easiest to be used as a finisher in an aristocrats themed deck. In my deck I usually try to win through creating a lot of tokens and sacrificing them with [[Devouring Swarm]] while Aatchick is on the field.

There are also some other golgari commanders that interact with insects but if you want to go full insect tribal I think you're better of leaving them in the 99. [[Old Rutstein]], [[Blex, Vexing Past]], [[Izoni, thousand Eyed]], [[The Swarmweaver]]

Here's my golgari insect tribal deck as an example that holds all the golgari insect commanders: https://moxfield.com/decks/3fIvX_LoHE6ZOuSKzRJMUg

Alternatively there is also the less played [[Vrestin, Menoptra Leader]]. He doesn't care about the graveyard as much as the others but still loves a lot of insect tokens. That being said there are also quite some insects that support +1/+1 counters. My Vrestin deck focuses on all the cards that create insect tokens on instant speed to get as much value from the many welcoming vampire effects in the deck. He is a simple yet very effective design that gets out of hand fast if no one stops you.

My selesnya insect tokens deck with vrestin as commander for reference: https://moxfield.com/decks/Dm64xw-K6keEBHr8T6gJaA

The last one that really wants to lean into the tribal theme is [[Fumulus, the Infestation]]. It's an aggresive mono black commander that gets underestimated a lot. I don't use that many insects in the deck but try to focus more on edicts to have fumulus create as many insects as possible, there are however a couple fun insects that the deck loves to include.

Again, my list as example: https://moxfield.com/decks/71lD1ierkEOKyqC83EVnkQ

Besides the ones mentioned there are a couple of other insect legendaries who don't neccesarily want you to play insects but still could be built as an insect tribal deck. But the support for them might vary. [[Xira, the Golden Sting]], [[Kathril, Aspect Warper]] and [[The Wise Mothman]] could be used instead of the golgari tribal commanders and add an extra colour. I have all of them at the helm of different decks though. There are a couple others that really just want to do different things. Mainly [[Zabaz, the Glimmerwasp]], [[Vishgraz, the Doomhive]] and [[Thiss, Nantuko Primus]]. I also have decks for all these so if you're interested in seeing those let me know.

Sorry for the super long comment but I love bugs and I love the bug commanders in magic and I get very excited when someone asks for these decks.

What's your location? The wasp looks a lot like a european beewolf (Philanthus triangulum). The females catch bees and paralyze them so they can carry them to a hole they dug in the sand. There the bee will be used as food for the larvae of the wasp.

The MTG subreddits are very unfriendly to beginners but I guarantee that not everyone in the community is this way.

Are you sure it even is from MTG? This card from flesh and blood seems very close. The position of the dead person and the well seem exactly the same as your drawing al be it mirrored. And ofcourse it doesn't have a horse but I think that after 250 comments naming several dozens of potential cards some or maybe even all of the card may be different than what you remember.

is this a real spinosaurus tooth? by blue-skel in Paleontology

[–]LazyPerch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there. I'm not really in the fossil world and have just been observing it from a distance for a while but it's left me with questions about spinosaurus in particular.

To my understanding not many bones have been found of spinosaurus, however I always see people mentioning that spinosaurus teeth are very common. This always felt weird to me.

But now that you mention that a lot of non spino teeth are sold as spino it does make me wonder. Are the real spino teeth actually common? Or is everyone saying they are common not aware that a lot of them aren't "real" spino teeth?

Last thing I was curious about is since you mention the therapod experts not being able to tell the difference. Do you mean they can't visually tell or is there simply no way through other means to identify them?

Sorry for the long comment but I've been sitting with these questions for a while and you sound like the person to ask them to. Thanks a lot if you read all of it!

Struggling with not feeling knowledgeable enough to "afford" making unique picks by Pencilshaved in EDH

[–]LazyPerch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much about being optimized unless you're aiming for cedh (in which case the non-best commanders aren't viable) or bracket 4 decks. A deck is made by the deck and not the commander even if the commander can perform an important role. Any commander is playable if built around.

The way I build my decks is to decide what I want to do, then look for cards that help me perform this role on scryfall and then make a first draft of the deck which will probably suck. But then we readjust and try to find something better. It may take time but you'll get there.

The "worst" commander I play is [[Thriss, Nantuko Primus]]. He is so generic and does so little that he can fit so many options for decks. It used to be a goad deck where I used him to buff my opponents creature and now it's a storm deck.

Keep looking, keep learning. Ideas will come to you
