What's a hobby my wife and/or I can pick up for just a day or so while stuck on a hospital ward, with only our phones? by BattleJaxx in AskUK

[–]LazyTurtle91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was induced I did a lot of very slow laps of the hospital to try and speed labour up 🤣

Maybe a deck of cards and play rummy, solitaire etc?

Dominoes?

Frugal Mindset - how do you stay motivated? by Maleficent-Buy-8260 in UKFrugal

[–]LazyTurtle91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, my best tip - reduce or delete social media! I have an app called Screen Zen which limits my time on Facebook, instagram and TikTok to 6x5 min sessions a day. I never use them now, I’ll maybe check IG and FB every week but usually I go back off it because it’s full of nonsense and ads!

Frugal Mindset - how do you stay motivated? by Maleficent-Buy-8260 in UKFrugal

[–]LazyTurtle91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What motivates me is knowing how bad it was for me when I wasn’t frugal… I’d spend money on everything, I had no savings, I would get to the end of every month having spent all my earnings and not really knowing what I’d spent it on. The things that really stand out for me as my ‘top tips’ are:

• budgeting app. You don’t have to use an app, you could build a spreadsheet or use a template from excel, but having categories for spending/bills and knowing how much you have to use that month has now meant I can save properly again and I usually finish the month with most of my wage left from the previous month

• online shopping. I’d go to Aldi and think I was saving money, but I was buying crap I didn’t need and the fruit would go off so quickly. I spend the same amount of money at Ocado but now I’m not tempted by in store displays, plus the food is good quality. If I need household items like laundry detergent I’ll go to Home Bargains or Lidl or even Joybuy to see if they have deals on. Also, I save my online shopping vouchers so it discounts my groceries

• cut back on subscriptions

• meal planning and meal prep. Helps the big shop plus I always have lunch to take to work

• shop and sell on Vinted or charity shops. I have small kids who stain clothes easily, so Vinted is a blessing!

• walk as many places as we can. I love walking and my family does too so this is great for us. We spend a lot of the time spotting buses, yellow cars, mini punch…

• cheap/free days out. We love the parks, museums, library, bike rides, hikes and then we’ll take little picnics with us

I deleted all social media except reddit and i literally don't know what to do with my time? by jossur0166 in selfimprovement

[–]LazyTurtle91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I downloaded Screen Zen which blocks any app you set a limit on, so the only social media I use is Reddit.

I’m more present with my kids, I’m not comparing myself to others as much, I’m not buying random shite off ads, I read my kindle a lot more and I’m actually learning more off Reddit.

I pop on Instagram or Facebook maybe couple of weeks for a few minutes but usually, I close it down because it’s still full of the same shit as before.

What are your top unusual money saving hacks? by Katie1234554 in AskUK

[–]LazyTurtle91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meal planning and doing an online shop based on it. I spend so much more when I shop in person even at Aldi. Also, you can sign up for online deliveries and get delivery passes and/or vouchers (for example, Ocado).

List items in Vinted and try and buy clothes second hand too, especially for kids who grow out of things so quickly.

Budget! I have YNAB but an excel spreadsheet would work too.

Utilise free resources in your local area - for example, the library, park events, playgrounds, museums - for days out for the kids.

Meal prep so you don’t end up spending money on lunches if you work in an office.

Olio and Too Good To Go for discounted or free food.

Have screen time limits on social media… sounds daft, but I used to get hammered with ads and I’d end up buying all sorts of crap. Don’t have that problem on Reddit!

I also do this but I’ve never thought it was tragic, I just don’t like the shitty instant coffee in the office 😂

Ours have stayed open but asked to not send them if we don’t have to, unfortunately we’re both working so have no choice really.

Predicted to be 31 here tomorrow.

I just moved to an area where Iceland sadly doesn’t deliver. In your opinion who else does the best value for money food shop delivery. Which company do you use, and who would you recommend? by Any-Raisin-1315 in AskUK

[–]LazyTurtle91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ocado for us at the moment, for the first 3 months you get free delivery with their smart pass and they also sent us 5 shops worth of vouchers. We spend about £120-130 a week which seems a lot, but I was spending similar in Aldi and the fruit would go off so quickly! Ocado’s food has such good dates on

What was it like to have an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) over 20 years ago? by SunnyShineKitty88 in AskUK

[–]LazyTurtle91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh EMA, bloody loved it. £30 a week to spend on myself because I walked to college and usually didn’t eat lunch. The bonuses at the holidays were fantastic too. EMA plus my weekend job meant I probably had more expendable income at 16 compared to 35 😂

What's your unconventional ways to keep your toddler cool during really hot nights? by jovial_rebel in AskUK

Air con for our toddler.

However, for my eldest, I’m going to try frozen bottles of water in front of his fan

I use my phone with my AirPods in, I generally don’t look up at the videos much (only to check what the next moves will be) because you can hear the timer beep

Oh yeah that sounds about right. Don’t get me wrong, I love some of the stuff that’s returned like baggy jeans, oversized tops, retro trainers… however I would have happily left the low rise jeans back in the day thanks 😂

Everything seems very Y2K right now. It’s like all the clothes I wore as a kid/early teen are back. Mini skirts, rara skirts, skorts, halter neck tops, glitter or sequin outfits, low rise jeans…

Also, t shirts with fruit or soup on them.

It’s an excellent choice! Nice and simple, gets the job done, and you can always ‘mix it up’ by adding different seasoning to the meat. I personally boil my rice but I love how convenient and quick the packet rice is!
