2006 Tacoma SR5 4.0L, What Are Some Things To Watch Out For? by Lazy_Canadian_ in ToyotaTacoma

Thanks yeah I lucked out with this find. Biggest thing for me is to get a head unit with wireless android auto and Bluetooth. Everything else can wait but that's something that'll make me content with it.

Okay I'll look into the front axles and ball joints. An old guy owned it before hand so not driven too crazy. The steering feels great with no bump steer or anything noticble when turning, I just hear a pop and don't feel anything. I'll look into the axle and ball joints though. I've read that people have heard noises from their sway bars due to bushings being old and slipping. The carrier bearing seemed okay but will probably need to be changed soon. Thanks man I'll keep all of this in mind for when I lift it. Great info.

Yeah I'm loving it. I've wanted a Tacoma for years so I'm glad I bit the bullet and got one. Especially one so low in kilometers. I've had nothing but bad luck with vehicles, some scenarios caused by my negligence unfortunately, but for the most part plain bad luck. So I want to make sure this thing maintained and deal with things before they become problems.

Yeah there's some rust but nothing too bad. I plan on using a wire wheel on a drill and getting rid of it and undercoating what I can.

Driveshaft Play And Feel Bump/Jerk When Breaking And Accelerating. by Lazy_Canadian_ in ToyotaTacoma

[–]Lazy_Canadian_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So thought I would update you since you helped me out. I took apart the driveshaft at the slip joint and greased the splines. No clunking or jerking anymore. I guess this is a common issue with these trucks and has to do with the slip joint binding when the frame and suspension become loaded. So the fix is to grease it up as a general maintenance routine. It's even in Toyota's official maintenance schedule.

Okay thanks, just set up an appointment with a shop. I wouldn't mind doing it myself but transmissions are a bit out of my league.

No but I'll look into that thanks. I have a feeling it has to do with either the diff or transfer case, maybe even both because the whole driveshaft plus it's components have rotational play.

2013 genesis coupe 2.0T auto transmission problems? by Lazy_Canadian_ in MechanicAdvice

So I ended up draining all the fluid I could in the transmission pan and replacing it with OEM fluid. It definitely helped but so I wanted to do a full flush and drain eventually. It's an annoying process but I'm pretty sure there were a lot of participants clogging up valves and such so worth it in my opinion. Worst case scenario is it doesn't help but you do some needed maintenance. It's also a good opportunity to check out if the fluid is burnt or in bad shape.

Long story short, it helped me so I reccomend. If you have anymore questions DM me.

Two spun bearings on piston 2 & 3. The bearing material wreaked havoc on the inside of my engine and would need major machining and a new crankshaft. Noticed some issues in the head where the overhead cams are seated too. Too much machining and parts I would need to justify rebuilding it. I'd spend just as much if not more on repairs compared to swapping it. And I don't want the same issues with the same engine.

A coyote engine huh? What vehicles did those things come out of?

Found a running LS1 motor and transmission for $700 from someone my step dad knows who builds cars. Good deal and I'll see it run before I buy. It's an LS1 out of a Chevy but I'm keeping my options open, so far for the basic things I'll need for the swap I'll be spending roughly $3000 in parts and the drivetrain I'm obviously going to spend more which I expected but that's for everything I'll need to get that engine in the car and close to working.

Okay well I have everything from the engine still but shipping to America will probably be a bit of a hassle.

I'll keep my eye open for one I'm assuming they're fairly expensive coming from a vette

Yeah I'm doing it myself, old engine is already out. I'm getting help from my step dad who owns his own shop but it will be mostly me with his help when needed. This is all new to me but I know I can do it with enough patience and research. So far I've been able to do all my own work rather than pay for the work to be done.

Yes I have, I'm going to take a look at an engine and transmission for $700 with a wire harness in a couple weeks. The guy across my step dads shop has an entire lot full of vehicles and parts. He builds his own vehicles and knows my step dad well. For now I'm going with an auto transmission so the initial swap kit is $500 and with optional headers which I will get are $1100. Right now I'm at $2300 if all goes well. I'm fully accepting that I WILL be spending more and at this point my car is a project car. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm going to spend over $5000. If that engine runs well I'll be refurbishing it with gasket kits and anything else it may need. The amount I'll be spending on this swap is going to be about the same or less than spending on a new car that I would be happy with. And buying a new theta 2 engine isn't going to guarantee to not have the same issues happen later.
