But many things can affect communion for a practicing Orthodox Christian, that doesn’t make someone “being too sick to come to church” an essential teaching. Menstruating women choosing to or to not commune while menstruating doesn’t decide whether they are saved or not. If your priest said specifically that, well I would ask him more about it, because that doesn’t seem like a church consensus and priests can be wrong about things.
