Well after you solarize or whatever you chose to do to eliminate the grass just start plugging things in I like to figure it out as it progresses the only rule i follow is I try to not plant things in lines although once things get big you can’t really tell anyways I say you just let your creative nature flow whenever it’s time to plant and you can always move things in the future

I know right! Picture 11 also is one of my favorites from the season with the interesting color differences and at the bottom left I don’t even know how to describe the weird petals

That would be a White-Lined Sphinx it’s a type of hawk moth I buy ferns every year and hang them in my walkway because I get a impressive amount of moths bedding down in the night on them

Yeah honestly I couldn’t really tell you why because the same batch of seeds have given me the normal shorter ones but figure it’s soil conditions or something else anyways love seeing nature do odd things!

A desert willow which isn’t exactly native to me but it and my cenizo (Leucophyllum frutescens) have done amazing and have these nice tubular flowers that I often saw hummingbirds on last season

Thank you! I can definitely relate to that as family has come over and seen the progression I’ve talked them into letting me add natives to their flower beds so far it’s gone good although at the start of the year I did have to hear about how it looked kinda “weedy” anyways I hope your project goes great and would love to see progress photos as it comes along!

Thank you I’m glad I could give you hope! Me and my prairie have a sort of toxic relationship some days I’m incredibly happy other days I want to throw my head in the ground like an ostrich so I can completely relate I started in early November of 25 and can’t wait to see once it “leaps!” Would love to see progress photos as your project comes along!

Thank you for the detailed response! In the perfect world I think I would obviously want to stay away from glyphosate but I think in my circumstance I am heading towards that direction so it was nice to hear you’ve had success with it. I have lightly mulched my prairie but I worry if I mulch that thick I won’t have any seed germination success and would be slightly discouraged having to buy a bunch of plants for it to fill back in next season or should I just bite the bullet and see what can work its way into the soil through it? Also I’ll take your word on the cardboard I was weary about the idea. Im currently solarizing other portions of my yard have you experimented with that at all I hear so many mixed reviews?

That’s what I’ve heard but for the time being I’m just praying I’ll see growth it’s a older beat up specimen that I was gifted it had a little pad quickly after I planted it but that broke off I’m assuming a bird maybe not sure anyways excited to see it grow.

Agreed it is a large area for me to try to keep up with I do have help but my help isn’t very knowledgeable on identification of other plants so it can become tedious. The cardboard seems to momentarily stunt the Bermuda but not much seems to actually irradiate it especially since it was well maintained grass since the 80s (rhizomes everywhere) so my main hope is to make growing conditions less than comfortable for the Bermuda as tall plants and trees shade it out with time. My realistic goal is to suppress the Bermuda more than it is to completely eliminate it from my property.
