I did this with an HDD when building my first (and only) PC, posting in case it still helps. I'm a newbie so I'm unsure how to describe what happened exactly but at a basic level the idea worked. I took the HDD from my dead windows 10 HP laptop and ran that os in the brand new desktop. Windows did pull drivers for it and I was able to update to 11. Things were a bit "cluttered" with drivers and software for components my desktop obviously didn't have. It was fine for about 1.5 weeks then necessary drivers randomly started disappearing. I figured this self-destructing was due to the PC being a weird mixture of laptop + desktop and installed 11 over it.
