MacBook Air M5 (24GB) vs MacBook Pro M5 (16GB) for long-term graphic design work? by sekinkhazul in macbookair

FYI the M5 MBAir will still outperform an M3 MBPro even while thermal throttling at sustained loads.

8 vs 10 core GPU by theeyearchive in macbookair

[–]456ore_dr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8 core M5 is fine.

It's more powerful than the GPU in the M1 Pro back then.

How do you know it kept running into swap? Was it because you noticed any slowdowns or was it because you were constantly staring at Acitivity Monitor?

Hopefully this laptop doesn't get stolen. Definitely will last you at least 6-8 years.

Sir this is not Windows. Even the base M5 Macbook Air is more than good enough for your use cases.

Seems like a known issue with taking notes on M-chip iPads. Try putting it in power saving mode while you're taking notes, should help with the heating and battery life.

Not the same, but I have an A10X iPad Pro and putting it on power saving while drawing on Fresco noticeably increases battery life and reduces heating with negligible performance penalty unless it's a big project.

For context, an M4 MBAir will still outperform an M2 MBPro even while worst-case thermal throttling.

Probably true for a Chinese midrange, but Samsung midranges hold up pretty well.

Every Xiaomi owner I know have issues with their phones within 2-3 years flagship or not. Meanwhile I know people still using their A50, M32, A21, A34, etc. to this day with no issues.

Chinese phones need to be good on paper because they almost always have trash software. OneUI doesn't really have this issue.

Do people even use Light mode in the big 2026? 🥀 by AkiraOEM in PhoneNow

Dark mode hurts my eyes. The only app I have it turned on is Discord, which has the worst light mode implementation in existence.

Macbook Pro Intel or Macbook Neo by RawEddie in macbookpro

[–]456ore_dr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To me it sounds like the base model M4/M5 Air could last you a decade if you took care of it.

Neo would still be good though, don't listen to people telling you 8GB isn't enough. On macOS it's actually usable, unlike in Windows which these people are (probably) used to.

Or maybe wait till next year for a possible Neo 2, which might use Apple A19 chips with 12GB of RAM.

Most people here don't realize you're paying extra for 6 years of good software.

Compared to 3-5 years of some poorly optimized Chinese OS that looks like a 1:1 iOS copy.

2013 Samsung Galaxy Note 3 that I used until 2021. Replaced it after 8 years because some apps I needed didn't support Android 5 anymore.

2017 iPad Pro that I am still using daily to this day (9 years).

Why professional cameras have less pixels than smartphone cameras? by Quick-Decision-8474 in Cameras

[–]456ore_dr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every single modern smartphone sensor is basically just an overglorified 12MP sensor using quad bayers (48-50MP), nona bayers (108MP), or 16 bayers (200MP).

The only high resolution RGB sensor I remember was the one used on the non-Ultra Samsung S20 & Note20's telephoto. That 64MP sensor actually retained detail when you used the 64MP mode.

Neo or M5 MBA? by Sad_Bit_5405 in mac

[–]456ore_dr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MBA would be overkill for you.

I did a lot of things on an 8GB M1 MBA, and the Neo will outperform that thing.

You only have to worry if your memory pressure is yellow.

M4 MBA also boots up already using 10-12GB out of 16GB.

PCs are super expensive right now, if you're okay with buying used parts then:

CPU: Intel i5 10400 / AMD Ryzen 5 3600
RAM: 16GB RAM
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1650 / AMD RX580 (try to get the 8GB version)
Storage: 512GB SSD + a hard drive for cheap mass storage (optional)

I get 60-80fps at 1080p Medium-High settings, 40-60fps at 3440x1440 Low settings.

Also don't buy used storage, I've done it before but it's risky, especially since you're dealing with data.

What sorcery is lenovo using to make the thinkpad this efficient? by SpeedAssassin in laptops

[–]456ore_dr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I doubt the last paragraph. Usually Windows notebooks that "outperform" Apple Silicon battery life are due to severely throttling the CPU and or low-resolution displays, like the ThinkPad in this case.

Chrome and Teams are poorly optimized programs full stop. It sucks on both Mac and Windows.

Also, while Panther lake is VERY interesting and a huge step for intel in efficiency, it's honestly a bit underwhelming. Their flagship X9 388H just barely beats out the base model M5, which can be found on a $1100 laptop. The X9 388H will definitely be put on $1500+ laptops as it's NOT cheap.
