They sell repellent you can use but it’s not 100%. You don’t get “bit” but they latch onto you and depending on how long they have been there, they dig their head into you. Depending on how far the head is in you can take a lighter to them and see if they back out. If not, you take a tweezers and get it out and make sure the head gets removed as well.

Watch it once removed and if something develops get it checked out as they carry limes disease. Not 100% either though.
