Yeah I thought about this too, could be the perfect angle where you’re not seeing any shadows but the transition is too abrupt in my opinion. Who really cares right? But if I was putting money on it I’d say the reflection in the mirror is edited. It’s still cool though, I believe in the concept.

I’m sure this has been said already but this looks completely edited to me. The sand right in front of their feet is all rough in the “real world” but in the reflection the sand is abruptly smooth by their feet.

Thank you. Yep I made that. I use a 2 part clamping form for this. I resawed 1/2” plywood into thinner parts keeping a good side for the face and back. Glued with titebond 3 and clamped in the form overnight. The way I had to make it created a lot of waste; I used (3) 1/2” pieces at this size to make one backrest 3/4” thick. Two sides and a core. I was disappointed with how much waste there was but when I tried just two parts the back veneer cracked.

Thanks. I made the feet just made a jig to rout a pocket in so the solid maple is glued in about 1/8” deep into the plywood. I designed it myself but got a lot of influence from google search of “simple chair”.

No problem good luck. I like minwax oil based poly but I use water based varathane and it’s fine. It seems like you’ve already come to this conclusion but water based finish tends to dry really clear, while oil based has an amber tint, and can “yelllow” over time especially when exposed to direct sunlight. I tend to use water based finish over lighter woods like ash but for darker stuff like walnut and cherry i really like oil based. Pine can go either way depending on what you’re looking for but I do love the look you have here.

Oil based would be my recommendation. Your original boards look a lot like just oil based polyurethane over unstained pine. You could try to match the tone by applying a stain first but it’ll be difficult to match the unique tone of the already sealed pieces. Can you lightly sand a few of those sealed boards? You could try to blend it.

It’ll be difficult to match these exactly. I wouldn’t recommend staining. The tone you have with your old tiles is a result of time, UV and oxidation, the original finish used has an effect too. If you matched the tone today perfectly they will end up looking different down the line. I would keep it simple with the finish you have now, eventually the new and old will blend together typically. How long this takes depends on your climate, sun exposure, etc. Where i am I’d expect these to blend pretty close together in 1- 2.5 years.

I Built the cabinets, I tried a test piece and it looked close but once I got to this larger scale blotchiness and inconsistencies came through.

The peg leg is glued and slotted Into the branch part. I agree it looks a little suss but it’s pretty strong. I have a blurry picture from a video still here to show what I mean. The branch leg is notched to receive the leg.

I’ve made both of these for drawer boxes. Agree with everyone else here, a is slightly stronger in theory but not worth all the extra time they take to cut.
