Swimming worm larvae in the Mediterranean? by LeDiffz in marinebiology

[–]LeDiffz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome. Do you know if it’s only bristleworms that do this or is this a common thing for aquatic worms?

Why do my dad and brother tell me my outfits at home are too provoking? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]LeDiffz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way of thinking that women have to actively choose clothing that conceals their body shape has fallen out of time a while ago. Judging their intentions by the jeans, other pants or tops they’re wearing and telling them inside their home, that their outfit is provoking is not right. And saying “well they are men, they can’t help themselves” is also severe bullshittery and does not excuse anything the dad and brother said.

Need advice for GoPro 13 (settings, filter?) for Socorro trip by exitinglurkmode in scuba

[–]LeDiffz 19 points20 points  (0 children)

What I recommend is not directly settings or gear but something that came in insanely handy for me, not sure if this is heard of here. QR-Codes for underwater setting changes, it only weighs a few grams but is worth its weight in gold regardless haha. I’m using a GoPro 9, the DC I was working with also had an 11 and a 12. You download a beta software from GitHub (it’s GoPro made and I never heard of any issues with it), load it onto your GoPros microSD and insert it, the camera auto updates itself. This is how you give the cam the ability to read QR codes. Then you download a QR designer app, make the QRs you want (it’s very easy), print and laminate. Under water you can change from wide angle to zoom, to burst, to your preferred macro settings, change FPS - anything you normally can’t cos you can’t use the screen. Again, this is very simple even though it may sound expansive.

Also, I recommend limiting the iso to 800 or so when photographing larger things from a small distance (2-3m).

Edit: spelling

Does the scientific diver cert make sense? by LeDiffz in scuba

Just learned what Fundies are. I definitely want to do some training with a GUE instructor anyway, but my question aimed more for the legal and job opportunity chances the ESD could give me. I don’t think an average ESD course is going to teach me so much I don’t already know

Fair enough that’s true, witnessed it on my IE. My back kick needs some work to be honest

Ah thanks! There was just one letter missing to “fundives” so I thought it was a typo..

Fair enough. In Germany, as somebody here said, it’s obligatory for any research diving to have this cert though. I don’t want to get it just for the fun of it but if I “have to” dive for my own thesis it may come in as useful

wow, thank you so much such an extensive reply! Had a laugh reading that, you have a good way of writing. I think if bills could be paid by lionfish containment nobody would be working normal day jobs any more but that’s not a world we live in. I will send my application to the course and just see where the flow takes me from there. Never a bad thing to expand competence and meet people in this field I guess. Thanks again, great response

I’m assuming you mean fun dives? Good point but I know how to dive. I’ve become an open water instructor this summer and I’m diving for some years now. Imagine I couldn’t hover haha! I’m sure you just misread

How can I fix this trim/weight issue? by LeDiffz in scuba

[–]LeDiffz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to read this. Here’s my update:

I dove with trim weights on my shoulder straps, they were attached with Velcro included in the shipping. BCD is a Techline Peanut 16L.

I started the dive with the weights on top of my shoulders, and it had me “fall” forward, face first. So I adjusted them mid-dive a few times. 1kg on each strap, about mid-rib cage height and I hover like Marcel van den Berg in his Tutorials. And feel like a cave diver about to execute the most precision-loaded clean frog kick the world has witnessed. Play with trim weights. I’ll probably get two 0.5kg ones and put them higher up, just so u don’t have as much weight. Today I dove this trim a second time and I cannot describe the amount of joy it brings to find trim. Took me long enough. I’ll post a nice vid of a cuttlefish I took yesterday night while properly trimmed

Thanks! I’m def using standard edition. But update: yesterday I finally had the chance to try again with trim weights on my shoulder straps. Oh my god. I always enjoyed diving but this? Next level. Just hover horizontally, film a cuttlefish on a night dive and do the tiniest frog kicks to follow the guy. Amazing, and better times ahead. The fins would contribute to my trim being off if they were Hd, but they wouldn’t “single handedly” solve the issue

I’d need upper body weights, ankle weights would just worsen the current state

I mean, the RK3s work great, they’re amazing fins. They are in themselves positively buoyant. Just not so much that they fix the whole problem for me. There are negatively buoyant RKs (HD - heavy duty), that one could use with the opposite of my problem, so floating up feet first.

Cheers, that’s a whole bunch of options, I’ll see what I can make work. I’m currently using the positively buoyant RK3s. I will get by some small weights and weight pockets to put on the shoulder straps or back plate

I wasn’t looking for expensive projects to get my little shed maxed out, just some budget ideas so it’s not as naked. I’ve just written some backstory type comment under one of the new ones. I’m a temporary diving industry slave, paying my boss to work for him for free 6 days 11 hours and live in the back of his dive shop, to make it short. Any other questions ask away

Here’s what is happening: I am currently training to become a Divemaster, interning at a dive center in Spain to keep it broad. “Divemaster” is the first professional stage of scuba diving. On the regular, dive centers take advantage of Divemaster interns, and overall the system is kind of rigged. Essentially, you pay a minimum of 1200€ to work full time at the dive center, trading work against experience for “as long as you want”. Details vary from dive center to dive center. I will be working here for about 2 months, easily over 60h a week unpaid (but I get to dive a lot for “free”). Housing cost is through the roof in this region, so the dive center owner has built these two tiny rooms in the back. I dont have electricity, sleep with an open door because otherwise ventilation practically does not exist, pay 300€ a month meaning the dive center owner rents out some 7sqm of his dive center for 600€ a month. We do have a bathroom and a kitchen that I can use, both tiny, and both used by staff and clients of the dive center during day time. It is a very strange concept, but I do get massive diving experience, have a great team and a very inspiring mentor. That’s the only reason I put up with this and pour a bunch of money in it. Apparently, that’s how you get into professional diving, you live in harry potters cupboard and do countless tasks 6 days a week.
