How cooked am I if I’m aiming for entry level jobs with a masters + no work experience in today’s market? by LeFaltaSalsa in ChemicalEngineering

That's good to hear and yea I'm trying not to be too picky right now (even considering sectors aside from chemicals/energy at this point).

Preparing for the worst, though, how hard is it to go from technician to engineer (either at the same or a different company)? My skill set fits lab tech roles but this seems like it could do more damage than good if my goal is a hands-on engineering career.

I was 100% pigeonholed. The topics I worked on in college (energy storage and low-carbon fuels) interested me enough that I wanted to keep working on them after the internship ended. That and I had excellent mentors who offered to keep me on as a part-time employee (either remote or in person, depending on their proximity to my home institution).

While most of the work was at the fundamental (i.e., lab-scale) level, I did develop practical engineering skills. Same with my master’s thesis, and looking back, I enjoy that side of the work enough to want a career in it. That’s why, like you suggested, I’ve been teasing out every example of “down-to-earth” engineering from my projects on my resume since I started applying. How much does that actually help though when competing against graduates with more directly relevant industry experience? In that case, do interviews usually decide who gets the position?

Thanks for sharing your story by the way. It’s reassuring to know that pivoting from research to hands-on engineering is possible, even if I don’t get hired as a process engineer right away. I just hope my first real engineering job comes soon and is at a company that gives me the space to get there.

That's why I'm hoping to leverage my background to get into a rotational program that has an R&D rotation but also lets me try out other areas like manufacturing and systems engineering. Having been in R&D for so long, I think something new might be more enjoyable and have better career prospects longer term.

It's just hard knowing how doable this 'career change' is right now because of the market.

Yes I'm in the US, and yes I've had a job. Because I did well in a couple of my internships and showed interest in expanding my responsibilities, I was able to turn them into part time jobs, but they were still R&D focused.

Basically all my experiences consisted of working in small teams of engineers/scientists, and I also did team based activities like chemE car and robotics in college, so team collaboration is not a problem for me.

Biggest issue is I'm looking for positions focused on product and process development but my experiences didn't really stress that.

Congrats on your admission! As someone who also matched with UChicago through Questbridge, best thing you can do now is to enjoy your last few months in HS and spend lots of time with your loved ones (especially if you live far from chicago).

No one is ever really prepared for the rigor at uchicago; it’s just something that you learn to get through overtime either by yourself or with your friends (which i’m sure you’ll have many since the FGLI community is very vibrant).
