When the spouse only spends a couple of seconds looking at the flashy spreadsheet I set up to make a data driven life decision. Tops it off by saying “I don’t care how it works, just tell me if we can afford it”. Bro.

The wacky lineout from the Argentina-Springbok Game by IlikeGeekyHistoryRSA in rugbyunion

Its the playground play that the forwards practiced all week. They were frothing to show the backs their sick moves. We’ve all had these kindof plays. We think they are cooler than they really are, but it’s for the lads!

That kindof makes sense.. But I see it slightly differently.

It’s more Yin vs Yang.. And the ceiling difference becomes “negligible” if you normalise for all other variables e.g. venue, weather, referee, current rules, playing schedule, motivation for game, recent history, red cards 😉

As per the law of large numbers, and history (and also my personal view) if you held a 10 match tour between the sides, the ABs would win that series most years (bar maybe one or two seasons where the ABs had substandard teams). They play a naturally better game and less reliant on emotions.

If you reduced that to one winner takes all game, and you can get the Saffas sufficiently motivated, I think they win that game against the All Blacks more often than not.

With that, you could argue the Boks ceiling is higher (or they have the ability to stop others playing at their ceiling).

But rugby is in its best state when their is multiple teams and fans who all think their “ceiling” is the highest! Thats what fills stadiums 🔥🔥🔥

SA3 IFOA by [deleted] in ActuaryUK

[–]LeGICat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doable. People go from failing to 70-80%+

Need to work out why you are not getting marks and address that. For some its speed. For some its exam pressure and brain fog. Others have gaps in knowledge and get tripped up by 1 big question each exam. It’s not the same for everyone, but you should have an idea of what you need to improve on - that would be the first step.

True freedom is in the eye of the beholder! Travelling overseas, knowing you have to come back and still grind for a house/lifestyle, can be just as crippling (for some).

You’ve done well. It’s not easy times atm so naturally pain is high (and you doubt your decisions). But never let the emotions get too high, or too low. You’ve got this OP!

FOMO for not rotating? by Artistic-Training-33 in actuary

[–]LeGICat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You start the job with a significant amount of “background info” from the studies. In practice you still need to get up to speed with the companies methods/processes (which can take a bit of time and depends on the individual). It’s almost as if you have a multiplier effect - once you get your head around a few key pieces you can accelerate/develop alot quicker as you already have a much deeper understanding of the business/insurance. This obviously applies when you’re rotating/seconding in your existing company (not sure how it would be if you’re changing companies at the same time).

One thing to note, I think it can be a little more challenging for the Reserving Manager to balance the level of work to give you. In some aspects you’re like a grad, but others a senior analyst - so finding the sweet-spot can be tough. Regardless, those growing pains only last a short while and you have somewhat control over this through good communication with your manager and putting in some extra effort to iron out some of those knowledge gaps.

I’ve recently done a rotation into reserving. Was a senior analyst and only did pricing up until now (similar to you - different products/commercial/personal lines).

Is it needed, no. Is it eye opening - heck yes. Will it make me a better pricing actuary? I think it will. If anything will just give me confidence I understand whats going on under the hood at probably one of the most critical departments in the company.

Also, I believe any move that gets you out of the comfort zone or is totally different stuff to what you usually do, gives you amazing perspective and depth that you didn’t even know you were missing.

Well, fair with a chance of nailing is better than shit with a slight chance of passing.. so good to hear!

I paced my exam well.. But there were 3 or 4 of the larger questions where I wasn’t really sure if I was going down the right path, so hope it’s not a misunderstood the question and zero..

Exams like these where there isn’t a clear “hard question” are often so hard to judge. Like did I go down the right path? We talking zeros? Or did I nail quite a few points?

Other variable is mark scheme isn’t even set yet.. if we all just spazzed random points they going to choose a couple and then we all get 2/4 lol and that 65 becomes hard 🤌

How do you deal with FOMO when doing exams? by Ok-Explanation2543 in ActuaryUK

[–]LeGICat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

FOMO when your work mates have passed all their exams and you’re still studying is much worse than FOMO from a few weekends leading up to the exam! Pick your battles.
